[[LongRunners Long-running]] satirical news program on ComedyCentral.

Instead of a straight-up NewsParody, a la ''[[SaturdayNightLive Weekend Update]]'', the program merely relates the actual news in a humorous tone, with special attention paid to the hypocrisy and gaffes of politicians and public figures, as well as the reactions of major news shows (particularly 24hr news channels) which range from the theatrical to the absurd. Because it relates actual news, it can pass for an actual news program -- though you don't want to take the special correspondents seriously.

The main anchor is currently Jon Stewart (who took over in 1999, replacing Craig Kilborn), but it's launched a few careers among its correspondents. SteveCarell, LewisBlack and Ed Helms are successful alums, and StephenColbert has gotten [[{{Spinoff}} his own spinoff program]] called ''TheColbertReport'' (a parody of confrontational talk programs such as ''[[TheOReillyFactor The O'Reilly Factor]]'') which became a runaway success. The show's writing staff has also published two books in connection to the show, both parodies of high-school textbooks; they are ''[[AmericaTheBook America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide To Democracy Inaction]]'' from 2004 and ''[[EarthTheBook Earth (The Book): A Visitor's Guide To The Human Race]]'' from 2010.

Before you dismiss it as silliness, they get some astonishingly important guests--Senator Kirsten Gillibrand ([[AmericanPoliticalSystem D-NY]]), former Senator (and current Secretary of State) HillaryRodhamClinton (also D-NY), former [[TheMenOfDowningStreet UK Prime Minister]] TonyBlair, Senator John Kerry (D-MA) (when he was running for the U.S. Presidency in 2004), BarackObama (ditto, 2008, and again in 2010 while sitting President), Senator John [=McCain=] (R-AZ) (many, many times, including 2008), Vice President Joe Biden (in 2009), and even former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf ''while he was still president'' (who is not even the first sitting head of state to be interviewed), to name a few. Stewart himself has to constantly remind viewers that it's still just a "joke news show" whose information is one day out of date.

It can be [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/videos.jhtml watched online for free]] (if you're lucky). In Canada, it is available at [[http://watch.thecomedynetwork.ca the Comedy Network's site]]. Just beware of ArchivePanic.

*** Really, any hyperbolic comparison to Nazicommunism. He has no time for anyone of any political ideology who uses HitlerAteSugar, and it's one issue that causes him to drop the comedic tone and get serious.
** Let's also add hiding behind a religion to make death threats on [[SouthPark the staff of other shows on the same network]]. You see, Jon Stewart has respect for FoxNews, even though it might seem otherwise, because as he's noted before they have a mission and they stick to it like glue. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-april-22-2010/south-park-death-threats He has NONE for the people in the same city his shows are taped in using the Islamic faith merely as a means to induce terror.]]
** Most recently, (as of August 4th, 2010) Congressional Republicans voted against a bill giving aid to rescuers of 9/11 victims. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-august-4-2010/i-give-up---9-11-responders-bill This was his response.]]
*** Even more recently, in his last show of 2010 (December 16), [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-december-16-2010/worst-responders he dedicated the entire show to this issue]]
*** The bill was finally passed about a week later, with many crediting that episode as a major reason for it happening.
*** Stewart's continued focus on the issue also lead to his being appointed to the board of directors for the National 9/11 Memorial in late January of 2011.
** As a New Yorker, Jon takes his pizza [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-june-1-2011/me-lover-s-pizza-with-crazy-broad VERY SERIOUSLY]].

** Subverted on [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-august-23-2010/the-parent-company-trap 8/23/2010]], where Jon starts going into the BigNo, but the view doesn't change to the dramatic camera angle. He turns to a different camera to try again... and another... and another...
* BodyguardBabes: After she defended her [[MayDecemberRomance much older husband]], [[FoxNewsChannel Rupert Murdoch]], from a pie-throwing prankster, Jon treated Wendi Murdoch like this.
* BreadEggsMilkSquick: "Um, how was your weekend? Let's see...on Friday, I...got a haircut. Uh...''({{Beat}})'' called a guy a dick on national television..." [[http://www.spike.com/video-clips/7hirrh/jon-stewart-spins-his-crossfire-appearance Found here]]
* BrickJoke: While anything that can be used as such, IS used as such, on August 16, 2010, Jon Stewart told John Oliver that his "[[ThisTropeIsBleep F*** ing]] Stupid English Accent" was offensive. No points for guessing what the first thing out of [[EmmaThompson Emma Thompson's]] mouth was when she came on for the interview at the end of the show.
* ButtMonkey: Stewart is routinely insulted and abused by correspondents (and occasionally guests).
** John Oliver (of TheBugle fame) gets this as well (usually when Stewart reminds him about his visa expiring). See the example under {{Pirates}}.
*** Oliver himself thinks of the US Soccer team as this ("I'm here with the US ''pffft'' hahahahah! No, no, I've got it... ''[[TearJerker Sudan, Sudan, Sudan]]''. Hi, I'm ''HAHAHAHA!''"), but when he sees they're not as bad as he expected he gives them "helpful vacation tips" for visiting South Africa like "Go on a nighttime stroll in Soweto in all your fanciest jewelry."
** Wyatt Cenac, as the youngest member of the team, often gets this as well: for instance, while everybody else was given their own promotional advertisements, Wyatt was forced to make his own (with things like [[UnsoundEffect Wyatt saying "laser sounds"]] in place of actual laser sounds), and is forced to stop at the end to allow Jason Jones to shoot additional footage for his own ad atop a horse surrounded by models.
** Steve Carell usually filled this role when paired with Stephen Colbert. Aside from their memorable Even Stevphens segments, there was an episode where Colbert took him out drinking and got him so drunk he [[StupidSexyFlanders admitted that he thought Antonio Banderas was very sexy.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder: C - D]]
* CanadaEh: Samantha Bee, whose Canadian-ness has often been fodder for jokes. Her equally-Canadian husband, Jason Jones, doesn't get anywhere near this kind of treatment.
** Sam's entries in ''America (The Book)'' are parodies of excessive Canadian politeness, usually prefaced by the header "Would You Mind If I Told You How We Do It In Canada?" and full of apologies.
* CantHoldHisLiquor: During a week where Jon Stewart was out sick, Stephen Colbert and Steven Carell took over hosting duty and showed the audience a video of the two at a bar where Carell is so drunk he starts making comments on how sexy AntonioBanderas is.
* CaptainObvious: Political commentator Bernie Goldberg of Fox News was called out on this after stating that the show was not just a comedy show; it was also providing social commentary. Jon responded that comedians have been providing social commentary for literally thousands of years.
* CastHerd: With the exception of a key few (Lewis Black, Samantha Bee and Jason Jones), correspondents and contributors tend to come and go at the rate of + /-1 a year.
* TheCastShowoff: Somehow, even this show can do that. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-october-6-2009/playing-the-race-card The 6 October 2009 episode]] features Larry Wilmore doing some pretty awesome (if fairly standard) card tricks while discussing how to [[IncrediblyLamePun play the race card]]. Who knew he was a magician?
** Which means...[[MagicalNegro Uh-oh]]...
** Lampshaded where Jon says that the only reason Larry is doing this segment is to show off the magic tricks he's been trying to get on the show. Larry responds...[[VisualPun by playing the race card]].
* CatchPhrase: "BOOM!" when Jon makes a TakeThat joke.
* ChewingTheScenery: Jon can never seem to resist a good SkywardScream or BigNo.
** '' '''[[{{Gladiator}} ARE YOU NOT]] [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-november-10-2011/indecision-2012---mercy-rule-edition ENTERTAINED?!!]]''' ''
* ChromaKey: Combined with StockFootage to put correspondents "live at the scene". The background once notably changed in the middle of one of these sketches.

* ClapYourHandsIfYouBelieve: In the [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-march-17-2010/health-con1---the-mediscarening 3/17/2010 episode]], John Oliver frantically implores Jon and the studio audience to do this to save the life of [[ItMakesSenseInContext a rose named Reagan, the final breath of American freedom.]]
** And at the Rally to Restory Sanity and/or Fear, John Oliver did it again, asking the audience to help revive Jon Stewart after Colbert nearly beat him in their Fear vs. Reason debate. Bonus points for doing this while being dressed as Peter Pan.
* ClusterFBomb: Done quite humorously while discussing [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-january-28-2010/speech-therapy Obama's first State of the Union]] address.
** Not to mention his tirade towards FoxNews: "Go fuck yourself! Go fuck yourself! Go fuck yourself! Go fuck yourself! Go fuck yourself! Go fuck yourself!..." Etc. ''[[CrowningMomentOfAwesome With a gospel choir backing him.]]''
*** Repeated for the terrorists that threatened the creators of SouthPark.
** The segment ''Clusterf#@k to the [insert adjective] House''.
** Done several times by John Oliver when discussing the 2010 World Cup.
* ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontWatch: Robert Novak, frequent target of {{Take That}}s due to his role in the Valerie Plame affair, was asked in an interview whether he'd ever seen ''The Daily Show'' or any of its material on him; he said no, then promptly went on to describe Jon as "self-righteous" and a "phony" and so forth. The old incident of Geraldo Rivera ranting to Bill O'Reilly about how TDS and TCR "exist in a small little place where they count for nothing" is most likely also an example, since he cited their supposed use of [[AmericasFunniestHomeVideos "video of old ladies slipping on ice and people laughing,"]] which are not exactly Stewart and Colbert's stock in trade. (We would say these were in-universe examples, except y'know, it happened in ''[[RealLife this]]'' [[RealLife universe]]).
* ContentWarnings: On the Global Edition only, as it airs on serious news channels in some countries.
-->The show you are about to see is a news parody. Its stories are not fact checked. Its reporters are not journalists. And its opinions are not fully thought through.
** A disclaimer that is becoming less accurate as the show goes on, to the point that it's almost an insult to the show. For instance, they just ''sent a correspondent to Iran'', and not only effectively brought the normality of the Iranian people into view, but interviewed several people that ended up becoming enemies of the state and kidnapped by the government shortly after the interviews. Jon will still insist it's not real news, though.
** Furthering the dissonance with regard to this issue is the increasing frequency with which Jon Stewart conducts discussions with his guests that are so intensive and engaging that they run well beyond the time-limit allotted by the show's half-hour format with the entire interview then being posted on the Daily Show's website. In addition to this is the fact that guests of the show include not just various experts and academics with books to promote, but representatives, senators, presidential candidates, diplomats, the heads of state from various countries, and the ''sitting President of the United States''. Furthermore, Jon Stewart does not simply use these appearances by important people as the fodder for even more comedy, but instead conducts serious, in-depth and well though-out discussions with these people like a real journalist (although he does manage to get some laughs along the way). Jon Stewart... comic genius or master journalist... or both... you be the judge.
*** Shush! Keep them thinking it's just some silly comedy show. They're much less guarded when they don't think it's real news.
* ContinuityNod: You know how Jon made Kristen Schaal depressed by revealing that the Chinese "one baby" rule [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-april-15-2008/olympic-mascots had some bad consequences to female babies]]? Well, apparently he learned his lesson when she expressed how nice it was that Hugh Hefner "lives with his three grand-daughters."
-->'''Kristen''': Why, what do you mean?
-->'''Jon''': ...nothing.
* {{Corpsing}}: Jon tends to giggle a lot while trying to report. One of the greatest examples is when he and Stephen completely lose it while reporting the [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-november-10-2003/prince-charles-scandal Prince Charles Scandal.]] He does it often during the tosses to the Colbert Report as well, or whenever one of his correspondents says something he wasn't expecting. Jon rarely tries to keep a straight face during his reporting, however.
* CouchGag: The scrolling list of cities at the beginning of the show.
** The toss at the end of the show (once or twice a week, anyway) [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-october-15-2008/daily-colbert---who-s-the-toss- And now let's check in with our good friend Stephen Colbert over at the Colbert Report]].
** "And here it is, your moment of Zen."
* {{Crossover}}: Applied liberally during the writer's strike, culminating in a brawl between Stewart, StephenColbert, and Conan O'Brien.
* [[CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass Crouching Comic Hidden Badass]]: A good portion of the show could be construed as cutting, but pretty average, criticism of subject X. But, interviewees beware: if you try to weasel out of, [[BlatantLies outright deny]] or [[TemptingFate fire back at]] the allegations raised, you will get ''schooled''.
** With elements of BadassBookworm, AwesomenessByAnalysis and BewareTheSillyOnes. Yes. He has read your damn book. He knows what you've said. He also knows what you said three weeks ago. And what you said to the NRA in 2003. And where you worked when you said it. So answer the damn question.
*** Stephen Colbert noted in a Rolling Stone interview that he doesn't understand where Jon finds the time to do it, but yes, he reads EVERY book that people are there to promote on his show... every word. Colbert notes that obviously this gives Jon a formidable advantage in an interview, as most people do not expect the host to have gotten past the summary or "cliff notes" that a staffer gave them.
*** One of the rare exceptions was when Jon was interviewing Jeremy Scahill for his book ''Blackwater'' (about the [[PrivateMilitaryContractors PMC]]), Jon clearly ''hadn't'' read the book and the interview came off confrontational, while failing to discuss the novel's main themes [[hottip:* : ie. the limited government oversight on hired contractors in the Middle East]]. Fast-forward a week, where Jon clearly ''had'' read it in the interim, owned up to his mistake and dedicated a segment showing just how badly he'd dropped the ball.
--->'''Jon''': Sometimes I can be unexpectedly confrontational, and other times...it’s almost as though I don’t know what the f**k I’m talking about at all.
*** It also happened that all the terrible things surrounding Blackwater began to appear in the news which completely validated Scahill's argument.
** There is a very, ''very'' good reason that Lawrence O'Donnell once said:
--> "The bottom line: don't pick a fight with Jon Stewart. ''Do not do it. You cannot win.''"
* CuteKitten: [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-february-11-2009/clusterf--k-to-the-poor-house---wall-street-bailout This video]] has Jon show a kitten's adorably despondent reaction to the bank bailout - just 'cause.
** Used again on [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-april-7-2010/pope-opera April 7, 2010]], when more sex abuse scandals come to light around the Catholic church:
--> '''Jon:''' Very cute. The kittens lack the capacity to understand the horror of this story.
*** PlayfulOtter: In fact, kittens playing isn't enough to take the whole of the scandal so a baby otter is thrown in too:
----> '''Jon:''' Aw, now the baby otter is playing with a kitten.

* DastardlyWhiplash: Jason Jones claims Geraldo Rivera is [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-february-12-2007/was-it-murder- this.]] To be fair, he does have the mustache for it.
---> '''Jason Jones''':Plus, what is with that ridiculous disguise? I mean, come on. I'm surprised he didn't put on a cape and tie [Ann Nicole Smith] to a railroad track!
* DeadpanSnarker: Almost the entire staff.
** [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-february-26-2009/brian-williams Any interview Jon has with Brian Williams turns into a deadpan-off.]] Brian can hold his own.
** Aasif gets extra points for getting the people he's interviewing to not realize he's making fun of them (such as a republican strategist about science) and getting them to say honest and crazy things as a result.
* {{Deconstruction}}: On Thursday, March 18th, 2010, Jon, playing the role of Glenn Beck, tore apart Beck's tactics and hysterical persona, again.
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: Stewart to John Hodgman in a "You're Welcome" segment - "Why, [[CrazyEnoughToWork that's so crazy]] - it [[AvertedTrope might just be fucking crazy.]]" (This in response to Hodgman's plan to shirk off America's debt by faking a 300 million passenger car crash.)
* DespairEventHorizon: Congressional Republicans recently voted down a bill that would give healthcare to those to who helped out recovery efforts during 9/11. Aside from being legitimately pissed off about it, the whole spiel was detailed in a segment called, "I GIVE UP."
** The bill was finally passed near the end of December 2010. A week earlier, Jon had four 9/11 responders as guests on the show (and the first segment was another lambasting of Congress for still failing to get it passed, while the primary guest was Republican Mike Huckabee, who also agreed the bill should be passed, going against the majority of his party), who all gave their stories. [[http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/27/business/media/27stewart.html?_r=2 Many major sources credited Jon and that episode]] for being influential in [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome spurring congress to finally get it done.]]
* {{Detournement}}[=/=]TheTag: "And here it is, your Moment of Zen."
** Since the election of Barack Obama, a common gag has been showing the blatant hypocrisy of Fox News by airing their defenses of George Bush immediately before/after the exact same circumstances with a Democratic president (ie. denouncing protests as "temper tantrums" in 2004 yet calling them "inspiring" in 2008). He also does so to the other news networks, but they don't have a Fair And Balanced slogan to pin against them, so it happens less often.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=185177&title=daily/colbert-just-a-quickie Here's]] a fairly good example of it.
* DontExplainTheJoke: On "Back in Black" discussing the power vacuum in Al Qaeda following bin Laden's death.
-->'''CNN Anchor''': [Al-Zawahiri] is more of a no. 2 than a no. 1
-->'''Black''': I dunno, Al Qaeda's former no. 1 seemed like more of a no. 2 to me. ({{Beat}}) I'm talking about poop, Jon.
-->'''Stewart''': Yes, I know.
* DoubleEntendre: the "Jon Stewart [insert double entendre such as "Touches Kids" here]" segments.
** Perhaps the best yet, lifted directly from a senator's rant to Anderson Cooper: Jon Stewart and Anderson Cooper Have Their Fun Looking At Gaping Holes.
** During a recent segment inviting former president GeorgeWBush to, er, be a guest on the program: "Come On Jon Stewart!"
*** He later asks them to change this when he's asking the same of Glenn Beck to come on. First they make an offer to take some thing off his chest into "Drop a Load on Jon Stewart", then an offer to get to know each other becoming (despite [[LampshadeHanging Jon's hopes]]) "Two Established Television Personalities Penetrate Each Other On The Daily Show While People Watch".
* DoubleSubversion: For instance, when during the episode with the Glenn Beck impression he made reference to masturbating to a Calvin Klein billboard he could see from his apartment window. An ad with a shirtless male model came up, to which he said, "No!"; then it was replaced by an ad with a scantily-clad female model, to which he said, "Ewww, no!"; it turned out to be an ad with a more muscled and and well-oiled male model.
* DramaticPause: A frequent gag. Here's an [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=82086&title=was-it-murder example]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder: E - F]]
* EagleLand: Obviously. But when ever he [[TakeThat makes a few jabs]] at the more...[[TheFundamentalist extreme]] conservatives we see in news clips, he or one of the correspondents makes it [[{{Anvilicious}} quite clear]] that said people fit in with "flavor 2" as they tend to "hate 50% of the country".
* ElectionNight: Heavily spoofed whenever it rolls around.
* EstrogenBrigadeBait: Have you seen the movie "Playing By Heart"?
** Also [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-january-26-2011/state-of-the-union-2011---correspondent-rebuttal here,]] when Larry Wilmore reminds modern viewers what Jon looked like back in 1999. Rowr.
* EveryEpisodeEnding: "Here it is, your moment of zen", often but not always followed by a clip from a video shown earlier that didn't make it into the cut of the show.
* EveryoneIsBi: ''Everybody'' on the show has either shown bisexual tendencies [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-september-3-2008/the-best-f--king-news-team-ever---larry-craig-bathroom on screen]], or simply [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=189151&title=Bus-Tour-of-the-Other-America hinted at]] having had sex with both genders.
* {{Expy}}: Often a source of them, as Jon and the other correspondents will take other acting roles in quite a similar vein as their characters in the show. Jon himself played an OnlySaneMan news anchor in ''JayAndSilentBobStrikeBack'' and Ed Helms showed up as the quite similar Andy Bernard on ''TheOffice'' (which, of course, stars former "reporter" Steve Carell.)
* FaceHeelTurn: The show's treatment of Senator John [=McCain=] following his 2008 presidential campaign makes frequent allusions to his 'fall from grace' from his (now-abandoned) maverick position. Appropriately, 2008 was also the last year Senator [=McCain=] made a personal appearance on the show.
* FacePalm: A favorite reaction of Jon when confronted with the most [[TVTropesWikiDrinkingGame egregious]] [[YouFailLogicForever logical fallacies]].
* FauxtasticVoyage: A gag using the ChromaKey.
** In one memorable example, two correspondents are supposedly broadcasting from Iraq. The one who is actually in Iraq demonstrates that his (real) footage is being used as the fake background for the other's shoot by waving his arms.
* FilmAtEleven
* FlameWar: The Even Stephvens debates which at one point attempted to prove which religion was the right one by holding a "Smite-off" (praying to either God or Mohammad to smite the other Ste(v/ph)en.)
* FlatWhat: In an interview with Barbara Walters, former GOP candidate Herman Cain said that, if offered a cabinet position, he would want to be Secretary of of Defense. Walters was so flabbergasted that she could only stammer out a '''''What?''''' This prompted Jon to show examples of people and comments that ''didn't'' faze her, including Syria's Bashar al-Assad saying that no government has ever killed non-deserving people.
* FoodPorn: Darn near literally in [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-august-2-2011/parliament-slight one sketch]].
* FoxNewsLiberal: Notable aversion. Though a decidedly liberal-leaning program, the Daily Show often hosts conservative guests. When it does, Jon Stewart treats them with respect and actually attempts to understand their point of view, and thus help the audience to do the same.
** In addition, despite the assumed viewpoint that he would go "easy" on the Obama administration, he is perhaps one of its most vocal critics. Yes, they are pulling for them to have success and find ideological similarities, but that merely colors his criticism, which is expressed more as disappointment when the administration fails to follow through on something they claimed. In other words, it bases its views not on party, but progress. Or in layman's terms:
--->"C'mon, guys, we should be doing ''better'' than this!"
* FollowTheLeader: The Daily Show has spawned a number of similar shows in the Middle East, notably [[http://parazit-parazit.blogspot.com/ Parazit]] [[http://www.theworld.org/2010/12/irans-daily-show/ in Iran]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/user/bassemyoussefshow the Bassem Youssef Show]] [[http://www.onthemedia.org/transcripts/2011/04/15/03 in post-revolution Egypt]]. Both show's hosts and producers openly admit that they are attempting to replicate The Daily Show.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Of course, [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-november-6-2000/intro---marathon Jon didn't intend to do so.]]
*** Not only is Jon Stewart a TimeLord, he has just pulled off the biggest XanatosGambit the BrickJoke world has ever seen.
* FunWithAcronyms: The [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=125823&title=10-f NAMBLA]] RunningGag.
* FunnyForeigner: Both played straight and subverted with John Oliver. There are plenty of times where his British-ness is used for laughs, but it's also heavily implied that he ''wants'' to be taken seriously as a journalist, but is forced to play the Funny Foreigner role for Jon Stewart's personal amusement.
** He's also used in lieu of a calculator whenever a measurement is given in metric, as part of the segment "Is that a lot?"
** On the other hand, it's usually not brought up with Canadians Samantha Bee and Jason Jones, unless the subject turns to Canada.
** [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-february-17-2011/la-douche-vita---italian-stereotypes The correspondent segment]] on Silvio Berlusconi's trial for statutory rape was a grand mockery of the trope, what with Jon's attempt at playing the whole thing seriously.
[[/folder]]

[[folder: G - H]]
* GagDub: Whenever you hear a voiceover, trust me, it's fake.
** By the same standard, if Jon has to strenuously emphasize that the voice-over is real, trust me, it's real, no matter how unbelievable it might be.
* GameOfNerds: Jon has openly admitted to being a Mets fan.
* GeneralRipper: Puppet Senator John [=McCain=] against illegal immigrants.
* AGlassInTheHand: Parodied in [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-february-11-2009/clusterf--k-to-the-poor-house---wall-street-bailout this clip]] as Jon handles a series of bad news about the Wall Street bailout by breaking a champagne glass, then the accompanying bottle, and finally his "comically convenient fish tank." (He's done similar gags with Spit Takes, as mentioned below, and one time with a Jenga game.)
** A CallBack was made to that clip in [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-december-1-2011/america-s-next-tarp-model this clip]] on TARP, where Jon reacts to the financial loopholes involving the bailout by first snapping a pencil, crushing a piece of coal so hard it becomes diamond, before doing the same to [[CrossesTheLineTwice a cute (live) kitten.]] [[spoiler:Not really.]]
* GodSaveUsFromTheQueen: She's p-p-p-p-[[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-april-2-2009/changing-of-the-garb poisonous]]
* AGoodNameForARockBand: Cribbing a quote from a CNN Anchor about a sex scandal, Jon proclaims

** Also [[DefiedTrope defied]] in a "Rally to Restore Sanity" poster - "I may disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're ''not'' Hitler."
** Later subverted in a segment about Planet Fitness, a gym that excludes hardcore weightlifters.
-->'''PF Rep''': All the animals [the bodybuilders] can go in their cages and the rest of the people can come here."
-->'''Jason Jones''': You know how else said that?
-->'''PF Rep''': .....Hitler?
-->'''Jason Jones''': What?? No! I was going to say ThomasJefferson!
** Jon does not like when anyone, of any stripe, compares anyone else to the Nazis. He's been complaining about it since as early as 2004 on Oprah, when it was the Democrats comparing Bush to Hitler and Republicans in the House comparing Democrats to Hitler and Democrats in the House comparing Republicans in the House to Hitler.
* TheGoldenRule: Subject of a Crosses The Line Twice joke in The Daily Show, where apropos of a meeting between Catholic Cardinals to discuss the sexual molestation scandals, Jon claims that the aformentioned Bible verse will be altered to include the footnote "except when explicitly prohibited by law".
* GospelRevivalNumber: "I guess what I'm sayin' is this..." "GO..." "If 'Fair and Balanced' is how you want to sell yourself..." "FUCK..." [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-april-20-2010/bernie-goldberg-fires-back "Guess what I'm sayin' is this..." "YOURSELVES!"]]

* GuestHost: The correspondents, when necessary.
** "Welcome to the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Ironically enough, I'm Stephen Colbert."

* HighClassGlass: Toppington Von Monocle, the show's "biggest fan," who appeared in a segment in response to Bernie Goldberg accusing Jon of playing to an "incredibly unsophisticated audience" (see SophisticatedAsHell below).
* HilariousOuttakes: Frequently left in. For instance, Jon Stewart stumbling all over the camera placement while talking with Gitmo.
* {{Homage}}: Jon riffed on Churchill while talking about his ''Crossfire'' appearance: "Tomorrow, I will go back to being funny, and your show will still blow."
* HostileShowTakeover: On Election Night 2008, Stewart and Colbert co-hosted a live show reporting on the results (in between humorous bits and interviews, of course). After Ohio went to Obama, it became obvious he was going to win the election. The Daily Show's two black correspondents, Larry Wilmore and Wyatt Cenac, took this as a sign that they could do "whatever they want", and tried to host TheDailyShow and TheColbertReport, respectively. It was over by the commercial break.
** Kristen and Samantha also once tried to take over the show when Jon went to the toilet, because they felt it was time for a female host.
* HoYay: More of a ShipTease, really.
** Jon and Stephen seem to actively encourage it.
** Not to mention Jon and Steve Carrell in the July 20th interview.
---> '''Steve:''' I missed you!
---> '''Jon:''' I missed you!
---> '''Audience:''' Aww
---> '''Jon:''' Talk about a third wheel.
** Jon and Brian Williams in any of their interviews.
** Jon talking to his latest Emmy
---> '''Emmy:''' I should have slept with Colbert when I had the chance.

* HypocriticalHumor: "Yes, it's cathartic - it can be so therapeutic to publicly ridicule those whose views you find repugnant when they are in no way able to respond."
** The end of his Special Comment about KeithOlbermann, accusing him of name-calling: "And as we both know, ''[[MemeticMutation Sir]]'', that's ''my'' thing!"

* ImplausibleDeniability: They get sitting heads of state, major government officials, Hollywood stars, scientists at the top of their field, and ''actual news anchors'' as guests. They've earned Emmys and Peabody Awards(!), and can get celebrities to drop by unannounced for a cameo and good joke. Their news is at ''least'' as insightful as the regular stuff put out by the networks and the 24-hour news channels (though people like Fareed Zakaria and Christiane Amanpour are probably better). But as he said when it was still true (and people were even treating the show as serious news), "The show leading into mine is puppets making crank phone calls."
* IncrediblyLamePun: He warned the Audience after they laughed at this that, because it was positive reinforcement, he would use more of these in the future.

---> '''Jon Stewart:''' I'm sorry Kristen, I... why, why, why is that?
---> '''Kristen:''' Well Jon, you might just say... I'm "bear-en".
** Jon criticized the news media's habit of using lame puns in a segment called [[HypocriticalHumor You're Not Punny]].
* INeedAFreakingDrink: Jon begins his interview with Mike Huckabee about abortion by pouring them both shots.
* InformedJudaism: Part of Jon Stewart's material since his stand-up career, with a combination of pride in his Jewishness and SelfDeprecation at being not very good at it.
** So, basically, he's Reform.
** But for the most part Jon subverts that trope. He clearly knows his Judaic lore and customs, but chooses to make part of his act about his choice to live as an ultra-assimilated, intermarried New York Jew.
* InJoke[=/=]NoodleIncident: Jon comes out to chat with the studio audience for a bit before the show starts, and then during the show he will often make a CallBack to something that one of the audience members said, leaving the home audience scratching their heads at the seeming NonSequitur.
* InstantAwesomeJustAddNinja: In a sketch introducing the newest correspondent, Aasif appears from behind a piece of greenscreen down to his waist.

** Also happens during the many times Jon's good friend DenisLeary is on the show.
* IronicEchoCut: A staple of the show is Jon recapping the basics of a story and assuming a result, then cutting to a clip of a reporter or speaker saying the exact opposite.
* [[ItsBeenDone It's Been Done]]: After Jon's recap of the Bipartisan Health Care Summit of 2010, Stewart and John Oliver proceeded to [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-february-25-2010/bipartisan-health-care-reform-summit-2010---government-unity explain in great detail]] a hypothetical system where legislators could come together, sit down, and talk about relevant issues. * JewishComplaining: Some of the jokes.
* JewsLoveToArgue: Often joked about, and once they captured empirical evidence on camera.

That's why Colbert on [[TheColbertReport his own show]] now supports "the overdog" (specifically, big business). * LiesDamnedLiesAndStatistics: If news reports trot out questionable statistics, the show will call them out on this, like the time(s) Fox's statistics totaled over 100%.

*** A variation of this is when the name is switched with some outragously long description like: "That twit who's nearly run out of 24 hour networks to appear on is right!" when talking about Tucker Carlson or "That old man who's been in Washington for nearly forever is right!" when talking about [=John McCain=].
** Most recently, whenever Jon does an impression of either a famous person or a famous movie character, he claims that he's doing it to promote his new one-man show of that exact same impression.
** The 2010 World Cup coverage with John Oliver. Usually ending with Stewart making a humiliating observation - such as USA tying England in the group round due to an own-goal - and driving Oliver to respond "FUCK YOU JON! FUCK YOU SO VERY MUCH!"
*** Which has carried over a bit further since then.
** The *Insert T-Shirt logo here* shirt exchanges between Aasif Mandvi and Wyatt Cenac for the first time, then John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac for the final pair, which has (so far) only been done for 3 shows in a row. First it was "Team Mohammed" versus "Team Jesus" to settle the "coming religious war". Then "[[HanlonsRazor Team Stupid]]" versus "[[ObfuscatingStupidity Team Evil]]" when discussing "Fox and Friends" blatantly avoiding naming, or even picturing, the founder of The Kingdom Foundation, despite tying him to the "Ground-Zero Mosque" due to his 7% share in Fox's parent company [=NewsCorp=]. Finally "Team N-Word" versus "Team Retard" regarding which epithet was worse... apparently the word "retard" is trading for 11 N-words, and "kike" was up 3 1/4... not to mention a "nicer" way to say Jew.
*** They brought it back for the revolutions in the Middle East and who gets the credit for Egypt and Tunisia opting for a democracy: Team Bush (Jon Oliver), Team Obama (Olivia Munn), and Team Local Conditions (Aasif Mandvi).
** Mispronouncing the US president's name Bearick Obemuh.
** Another popular RunningGag is [[BlatantLies Jon throwing his coat and tie into the audience]]. ''*puts finger up to ear*'' I'm sorry, I'm being told that Jon putting his finger up to his head as if receiving a correction message on a headset is the actual gag.
** On [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-november-10-2011/indecision-2012---mercy-rule-edition the November 10, 2011 episode]], whenever Jon got stuck on a list of something, he finished with a government agency, usually the [=EPA=]. (The main highlight of the episode was Rick Perry's gaffe at the [=CNBC=] GOP Debate, where Perry stumbled on the 3rd government agency he would do away with as president.)
** He has started doing variants of spit-takes, saying he will watch the clip while doing various things, including, at one point, holding a kitten. Coal turns to diamonds, the kitten to glass, food is destroyed, pencils are broken...
* SarcasmFailure: Occasionally. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-august-4-2010/i-give-up---9-11-responders-bill Stewart's reaction]] to a repeal of a bill to provide treatment to firefighters who obtained respiratory problems from working in the WTC ruins rescuing survivors (because it was funded by closing a tax loophole used to keep corporations from paying income taxes) is a particular example. Appropriately, it was even named "I give up".
-->'''Stewart:''' [[{{Angrish}} I mean, if they had... I don't even... Honestly, I just don't...]]
* SarcasmMode: Happens quite frequently, but particularly in the entirety of [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-february-25-2010/bipartisan-health-care-reform-summit-2010---government-unity this]] where Jon and John throw out completely hypothetical ideas of two government bodies discussing and voting on ideas inside buildings. ...Then again, what if both of those bodies are ''fucking idiots''?
* SchmuckBait: Jon's TakeThat segments. Don't try to [[TemptingFate answer back]] unless you're ''really'' sure you can win [[spoiler:([[FailureIsTheOnlyOption you can't]])]]. This fact is so well known by now that KeithOlbermann played with it a bit, teasing a typical LargeHam response for a whole episode before meekly agreeing with Jon's main point and apologizing.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: In one skit, Stewart was mocking a (defeated) bill that would've said, "Life begins at conception." He then monologues to himself about a screenplay idea involving the killer being a woman's unborn baby. The camera then pulls away like they're going to commercial, leaving Stewart confused and {{Corpsing}}, and [[DiscussedTrope quoting the trope]] by name ([[PrecisionFStrike mostly]]):
-->'''Stewart''': You known it's bad when ''the camera guy'' goes, "Fuck this! I'm outta here!"
* SelfDemonstratingArticle: When Jon plays a clip of George Carlin's famous "The Seven Words That You Can't Say On TV," the entire clip is bleeped out. [[CaptainObvious You can't say those words on TV, you see.]]
* SelfDeprecatingHumor: Jon, at both himself and the show. He even gave kudos to a man with a very unfortunate name for putting up with "this juvenile bullshit."
* SeriousBusiness: Pizza in New York, as Jon demonstrates [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-june-1-2011/me-lover-s-pizza-with-crazy-broad while chewing Donald Trump out]] for taking SarahPalin to a pizza chain and [[BerserkButton eating his pizza with a fork]].
* ShoehornedFirstLetter: On one [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-january-25-2007/alphabet toss]] to ''TheColbertReport'', Jon Stewart made fun of StephenColbert for playing the letter "Z" on ''SesameStreet: All-Star Alphabet'', leading to this exchange:
--> '''Stephen:''' Yeah, you know what "z" stands for, Jon: ''[[{{Revenge}} zrevenge]]''!
--> '''Jon:''' See you in a minute, Stephen!
--> '''Stephen:''' ''I will have my zvengeance!''
* ShortTitleLongElaborateSubtitle: Many of the guests' books.
* ShownTheirWork: Jon's interviews. Especially the authors - Jon reads every book plugged on his show cover-to-cover, and it shows.
* ShoutOut: [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-january-4-2010/the-best-f--king-news-team-ever---tiger-woods--faith A truly hilarious one.]] [[TwoWordsObviousTrope Five words:]] [[spoiler: John Oliver as a [[{{Avatar}} Na'vi]].]]
** Jon's impression of Dick Cheney depicts him as Burgess Meredith's version of [[Series/{{Batman}} The Penguin]].
** John Hodgman is perhaps best known as the PC in Apple's ''"Mac vs. PC"'' ad campaign. Jon Stewart forces him [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-july-19-2006/net-neutrality-act to admit this during the show]].
** ''Possibly'' "[Give the banks bailout money or] everything you love and hold dear will become [[NeonGenesisEvangelion Tang]]."
** Jon admitted in his interview with [[TheRachelMaddowShow Rachel Maddow]] that his famous labelling during the rally of cable news as "the 24 hour political pundit perpetual panic conflictinator" was a reference to PhineasAndFerb.
** "Why is Jon Stewart's [[BeardOfEvil evil]] cousin [[VideoGame/WarioLand Wario]] hosting the show?"
** "[[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-november-14-2011/indecision-2012---saturday-right-fever The subject was foreign policy]], and all the candidates seem to agree: America needs to start [[{{Nintendo}} kicking the world's ass]] [[MemeticMutation and taking some funny-sounding names]]."
** "To be fair to Herman Cain, we can't all be as wise [[Anime/{{Pokemon}} as Slowking wearing the Shellder of knowledge]]. The Shellder of knowledge; look it up!" The culmination of a lengthy discussion on why Herman Cain picked the wrong ''Pokémon'' film quote to use to close his campaign.
* SkywardScream: A failed attempt can be seen [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=149372&title=9/11-earwig here]].
** Played straight [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-march-2-2009/cpac-after-party here.]] [[TheKhan "KROOOOOOOOOHHHHHHNNNNNNNN!"]]
** [[http://www.hulu.com/watch/212809/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-thu-feb-3-2011 BEEEBEERRRRRR!!]]
** Going back to the original instance of it on the show...he got in a proper [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-february-10-2004/the-wrath-of-khan KHAAAAAAN]].
* SophisticatedAsHell: John Oliver. A nod must be given to Toppington Von Monocle, who quoted [[http://www.vroma.org/~hwalker/VRomaCatullus/016x.html Catullus 16]] to disprove the notion that the Daily Show audience is uncouth.
** This is also the effect of those times when they forgo the elaborate joke and just insult someone, such as the long campaign of describing Robert Novak as a "douchebag" (culminating in an attempt to "bury the hatchet" wherein Jon earnestly explained, "I only ever said those things to you because I sincerely believe... that you are a terrible person") or "In Dick Morris's defense, he ''is'' a lying sack of shit." And of course the "go fuck yourself" choir.
* SpitTake: Both used straight and spoofed regularly. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=222786&title=Changing-of-the-Garb Here's]] an example.
** Subverted [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-january-13-2010/news-of-the-weird---mark-mcgwire--game-change---sarah-palin here]] (about 3:05 in) when Jon obviously sets himself up for a spit-take...and then nonchalantly keeps on drinking from his mug.
** Didn't they do one where it seemed like he was going to do one and instead he bit into the cup?
*** Basically, he's played this straight, deconstructed it, reconstructed it, and exploited it for all its worth. And it's still kind of hilarious.
* {{Squee}}: After showing President Obama having a candid talk at a GOP conference, and President Obama completely blowing away every one of their talking points, Jon Squeed.
--> (In high pitched voice) "...Holy S** t! They're gonna air this!? This is gonna be awesome!"
** You can literally hear the female section of the studio audience squeeing in the 4/26/10 show when [[FetishFuel Jason Jones swaggers on set holding an assault rifle.]]
** And of course, the time they had RobertPattinson on, and the entire audience was made up of teenage girls.
* StacysMom: Made fun of in their sketch about [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-july-17-2008/cougars "cougars"]].
* TheStoic: Of all the possible people, Colbert had a moment of this during the 2008 elections. When Obama locked up California and, thus, the elections, the entire crew started freaking out and wondering what the post-Bush world must be like. So, they head outside and start gushing over the fact that the sun is shining, children are at play, etc. Meanwhile, Colbert just stands there, and firmly reminds them that Bush is still president for two more months, killing the mood of the others.
* StopHelpingMe: In the midst of an uphill battle to retain his Senate seat, John [=McCain=] had Sarah Palin speak for him to garner some much-needed publicity for his campaign. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-march-30-2010/lady-and-the-gramps This proved to be a very bad idea.]]
* StraightMan: Stewart to the correspondents.
* StrawmanHasAPoint: Invoked intentionally during one of Stewart's Glenn Beck impersonations.
--->"Strawman slippery slope dumb guy may have a point."
* StuffedIntoALocker: John Oliver, [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=215312&title=Sidwell-Friends-Quad reporting live from inside Malia Obama's locker]].
* TheSwearJar: An "[[BarackObama Obama]] [[OsamaBinLaden Osama]] Flub Jar".

[[/folder]]

[[folder: T - V]]
* TakeThat: Several times over, typically directed at various news networks for failing in the investigative portion of "investigative reporting." Among them are FoxNewsChannel (typical fodder for the show), followed by [=CNBC=] (over bad financial advice), and most recently, [[CableNewsNetwork CNN]], for "Leaving it there".
** Jon's recent [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-november-5-2009/the-11-3-project deconstruction of Glenn Beck]] was absolutely hilarious.
*** And then he did it [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-march-18-2010/conservative-libertarian again]].
*** And once more, in the [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-november-18-2010/george-soros-plans-to-overthrow-america November]] [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-november-18-2010/the-manchurian-lunatic 18th, 2010]] episode. He does NOT like Glenn Beck.
*** He geared up for it [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-december-1-2010/the-food--the-bad-and-the-ugly in December 2010]]... then said "Ah fuck it. It's not worth it anymore."
*** In what may be the farewell for such segments, on [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-april-7-2011/intro---jon-tells-the-truth-while-wearing-glasses April 7, 2011,]] he did one more, a tour de force that took it over the top and then below the bottom and then over the top again just for good measure, in honor of Glenn Beck's contract not being renewed.
** An older TakeThat at CNN for letting someone go by without calling them on a completely [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-april-26-2005/fill-in-the-blank BS claim]].
** The [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-january-21-2010/special-comment---keith-olbermann-s-name-calling deconstruction of Keith Olbermann]] was choice as well.
--->And no, this teleprompter is not stuck!
** A more playful TakeThat was when former-correspondent SteveCarell was a guest. Their opening clip was not of Steve Carell in his new movie, but of other-former-correspondent EdHelms in TheHangover.
** Jon's TakeThat against Bernie Goldberg was genius. [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-april-20-2010/bernie-goldberg-fires-back It is quite possibly the best and most hilarious use of a Baptist choir in recent memory.]]
** After the Haiti earthquake, he finds out that Rush Limbaugh believes Obama will use the humanitarian efforts as a publicity stunt to gain minority votes. Stewart's response: "Hey, I think I know the cause of your heart trouble--''you don't have one.''"
* TemptingFate: A favorite of the show during the first segment. Usually used to show the hypocrisy of news programs (most often FOX News), where Jon will show a video, then say something along the lines of "next thing you know, they'll say..." and sure enough, another video rolls showing them saying that.
** A Memorable "Take That" was aimed towards the inventors and the people behind the SOPA/PIPA (ACTA) bill. The day when all the rebellion and internet shut downs happened he went wild, taking down the supporters of the bill, the people who don't support the bill and every other person who's for this ever...and even Wikipedia for taking it's stand against it.
** [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] on the June 16th episode, when he shows a clip of a FOX News anchor blasting Obama for asking people to pray to God in a speech even though he doesn't regularly go to church. Jon comments along the lines of "wouldn't it be hilarious if they had previously begged him to show his religious side and tell people to pray?". Immediately afterwards he says, completely [[DeadpanSnarker deadpan]] "cue FOX News clip from the day before the speech" showing just what he wanted.
** Anyone notice that every time the show goes on hiatus, even CRAZIER crap happens? When Jon and the crew come back from vacation, they've got twelve different scandals or disasters to cover. It's as though, "hey let's take a break here while nobody's doing anything! So here we are in sunny Hawaii and... what's that on CNN?... OMG the Vice President shot someone in the face!
*** Some might even think that those in the scandals do it on purpose, knowing that Jon and his crew would be more damaging to them then the "actual" journalists.
*** And again, during the Egyptian uprising of February 2011 the show was on hiatus ''again''. By the time Jon and crew made it back, the protesters had gotten the military to throw out Mubarak. And left Aasif Mandvi complaining about missing out on all the love reporters were getting from the protesters after the overthrow.
*** During a weeklong hiatus in March 2011 Japan got hit by the earthquake and the tsunami, Middle Eastern leaders opened fire on their own people, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking Knut the polar bear died]] and the US militarily enforced the no fly zone in Libya.
-->'''Jon''': When we left the world's two biggest trouble spots were Wisconsin and the set of TwoAndAHalfMen. And then suddenly ALL HOLY HELL BREAKS LOOSE! I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO LOOK AT!
* TheGlassesComeOff: In this [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-january-21-2010/special-comment---keith-olbermann-s-name-calling segment]] he takes off and puts on various pairs of glasses while making his dramatic speech.
* TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers: In October 7, 2008, while analyzing the "stupid" vote, John Oliver broke it down into twelve sections: paste eaters, numbskulls, nitwits, fucktards, people whose hands get stuck in pickle jars when they eat pickles, people who lose arguments to babies, douchenozzles, tiger petters, people who jump up and down on frozen lakes, shaved gorillas who've somehow managed to acquire a driver's license, the voluntarily lobotomized, and [[TakeThat Cubs fans]].
** In their commentaries on the television news media, they'll often show the news media's hive-mind collective latches onto a particular key-word or -phrase and repeats it incessantly by means of a montage. They'll show sometimes upward of a dozen clips of different news anchors, reporters, and pundits repeating the same catch-phrase about an item, then end it with one of the talking heads (usually a Fox News pundit) saying something ... really bizarre, though still on-topic.
* ThisIsForEmphasisBitch: [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-july-15-2008/satire-on-the-street Think again, bitch!]]
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: "Ohh, this one's gonna get you upset..."
* TimeTravelTenseTrouble: Done, amazingly, without actual time travel, when [[StephenColbert Stephen]] hijacked one of the "And on tonight's ''ColbertReport''" segments.
-->'''Jon''': [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-june-3-2009/daily-colbert---reverse-toss You're hurting my brain, Stephen.]]
* {{Tontine}}: In one segment, John Hodgman suggests fixing the national debt by making Social Security into a tontine. And making murder legal.
* TotallyRadical: Spoofed in a segment about the rush by politicians and the media to embrace {{Twitter}}, Samantha Bee gave a report which included the following exchange:
--> '''Samantha Bee''': Man, this stuff is wizard!
--> '''Jon Stewart''': Is that a new word for "good"?
--> '''Samantha Bee''': Probably.
* TrainingMontage: John Oliver performs one of these {{Rocky}}-style to "get in shape" for being [[FootballHooligans a drunken, violent lout]] during the 2010 World Cup.
* TranquilFury: Jon's evisceration of ''Crossfire''
* {{Troperiffic}}
* VerbalTic: Cock. ''Caaaaaaaaahhhhhhhk...''

* [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotAwesome What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?]]: "The best f* cking news team ever. We have a rocket. CNN doesn't have a rocket."
** Which is topped by the Election Day intro [[StephenColbert Stephen]] cooked up: '''''[[http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?videoId=209508&title=indecision-2008-americas-choice THE FINAL ENDGAME ALPHA ACTION GO TIME LIFT-OFF DECIDE-CIDAL HUNGRY MAN'S EXTREME RAW POWER ULTIMATE VOTESLAM SMACKDOWN '08 NO MERCY: JUDGEMENT DAY '08]]'''''
*** ''''''08!'''''
*** And then Jon Stewart lit former Majority Leader of the House Dick Gephardt [[IncendiaryExponent on fire]], and [[StuffBlowingUp blew him up]].
---> '''Stephen Colbert''': ...did you set fire to Dick Gephardt?
---> '''Jon Stewart''': That's right, Stephen, we lit former Majority Leader of the House Dick Gephardt on fire...and then we blew him up.
---> '''Stephen Colbert''': ...kudos.
* WhenIWasYourAge: Happens briefly in [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-may-3-2005/colbert---sign-of-the-crimes this]] segment. StephenColbert tries to outdo an interviewee's impoverished upbringing with "[[AlienGeometries Did you have floors?]]"

** Jon's also a good enough sport to admit this about ''[[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-october-29-2009/for-fox-sake- himself]]''.
---> '''Jon''': *chuckles* I'm a bad writer.
* WorstNewsJudgementEver: Mentioned [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/thu-august-7-2003/headlines---teutonic-plague here]].
** Done again, along with a subtle [[WhatTheHellHero What the hell, news!?]] [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-january-25-2011/indianapolis-homeless-talent-show here]], where John can be seen literally ''pleading'' that the interviewer realizes just how idiotic the piece is, and cut it short. No points for guessing what happens.
*** And to elaborate a bit - the local news program [[FollowTheLeader tries to find their own "man with the golden voice", a homeless man that sounded strikingly like a DJ]]. They then went into the streets of Indianapolis to see what talents their local homeless might have. It starts off with the interviewer asking a homeless woman if she's "heard about the homeless man who had the golden voice?" on YouTube... and [[ItGotWorse gets worse from there.]]

'''Williams:''' Joey Bishop, ladies and gentlemen.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: Jon's response to [[BlondeRepublicanSexKitten Dana Perino]], a commentator on FoxNews, when she criticized [[http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-august-4-2010/i-give-up---9-11-responders-bill Anthony Weiner's tirade]] over the 9/11 healthcare bill.
-->'''Dana Perino''': I don't know all the particulars of the bill, *stammers* the point of it... I have no idea what Anthony Weiner's even talking about! He's just screaming and it is ''such'' a turn-off.
-->'''Jon Stewart''': Is it? Is it a turn-off? Is that from your Playboy profile? "My turn-offs include Weiner screaming, and in any way [[TakeThat justifying my being treated as an expert]]"?!
* YouKeepUsingThatWord: Jason Jones asks if the (bigoted) local leader of and ''Americans Against Hate'' chapter knew what "against" meant. Said leader had passed out pamphlets to not officially allow a Muslim-American into the party.
