In the final chapter, Bobby acknowledges that while he and his father had good moments, he is not as close to his parents as he once was, and after spending his whole life disappointing his parents, he's done living his life for them.

Chapter 3 shows that it's more complicated than that; meeting Connie, Joseph revealed that he was angry that everyone knew but him, and he felt that Dale mistreated Nancy and was mad that she still stayed with him. Joseph moved out in the hope of making a career as a football player in college, but then he met Kate from his childhood in a bar, they got drunk and slept together, and Kate ended up pregnant. At first nervous, Joseph came around to be a father, but things came crashing down when Joseph revealed that his father was John Redcorn, horrified, she told Joseph that John Redcorn was also her father; they had an abortion, broke up, and cut contact. Joseph's last appearance in the story shows him as an angry drunk, implying he's homeless.
