The Fiend is huge and virtually indestructible, thanks to a defensive arm, the ability to summon Skull Knights and regenerate their forces, the ability to trap foes, and an arm that can read multiple minds at once, predicting and countering every strategy his opponents try. The Skull Knights destroy Flame Swordsman, and when Alexander unleashes the Arm of Destruction on Solomon Muto, Baby Dragon, Happy Lover, and Thunder Kid take the hit and are destroyed. Yugi and Yami Yugi realize they have to stop the Fiend somehow, but can't think of a way--until Yugi suggests that since the Millennium Puzzle is connected to Yam's mind, they can use that to trap Alexander within it.

Alexander the Great recognizes Shadi as the one who set up the pyramid and its tests. When Joey protests that they did all the work and therefore deserve the power promised, Alexander reveals that he ''also'' cleared the five trials with four of his loyal vassals at his side--but the doorway wouldn't open. Feeling robbed of his prize, he lambasted his servants and was driven mad by the Millennium Ring, which trapped the souls of his vassals in the game as well as his own, then deserted him. Alexander's good half was locked in the game, while his evil half waited for a chance to escape. Two millennia later, he possessed Alex Brisbane and tricked Yugi's group, setting the events of the series in motion.

Each side summons all of their monsters, except Yami Yugi, who keeps Kuriboh and Hinotama Soul locked in their capsules for now. Yami merges with Black Luster Soldier, while Alexander, who also possesses Duel Armor, merges with Reshef the Dark Being. His vassals flank Yami Yugi, so Joey, Tea, Tristan, and Solomon help out by destroying some of the enemy monsters. Displeased at his servants failing him, Alexander banishes them and their monsters from the game in order to summon the Seven-Armed Fiend, a hulking behemoth with seven different abilities.

Shadi declares that since Yugi and Alexander both have claims to the reward, they must do battle in one final test--an all-out war. (Apparently what stopped him from entering the first time was the lack of an opponent.) Each side may summon every Capsule Monster they collected on their journey, and the first to run out loses. Joey notes that Alexander appears to be alone, but his vassals stand at his side, making the battle five on five.
