In a few weeks, Marge is suffering from morning sickness, and a visit to Dr. Hibbert reveals that she is pregnant. While she quickly tells her children, she's much more reluctant to share the news with Homer, especially after he thanks God for his life being perfect. Instead, Marge turns to her sisters, who are delighted to hear the news--and even more delighted to learn that Homer would be devastated if he found out about the pregnancy. Marge makes Patty and Selma promise not to tell Homer; instead, they call up the biggest gossips in Springfield, who are quick to spread the news. The Bouviers then arrange a baby shower for Marge, just when Homer happens to be getting back from work. He finally pieces together what's happening, and throws a screaming fit.

The Bouviers then arrange a baby shower for Marge, just when Homer happens to be getting back from work. He finally pieces together what's happening, and throws a screaming fit.

Later that evening, Marge and Homer discuss the future: Homer knows that he can't possibly support a third child on his bowling alley paycheck. Marge suggests that he ask for a raise, and while his boss is willing to give it, the alley isn't making enough money to provide for one. Homer then tries to drum up business by wildly firing a gun outside the building and shouting at passerby. This plan fails, and also causes Homer to lose his dream job. A reluctant Homer knows that there is only one place where he can find work, and goes back to the power plant. Mr. Burns decides to humiliate Homer even further by installing a bleak plaque above his old workstation: "DON'T FORGET: YOU'RE HERE FOREVER." A depressed Homer returns home and complains to Marge, who tells him that she's begun having contractions.

At the hospital, Dr. Hibbert works to deliver the baby as Homer, still depressed, comments on the miracle of "another mouth." Even the child's birth can't rouse his spirits...until a tiny hand reaches out and grabs his thumb. He looks down at Maggie and immediately loves her, taking her into his arms and declaring her "the most beautiful baby girl in the whole world." While he and Marge kiss to celebrate, Maggie, feeling neglected, reaches off-screen and discovers [[CompanionCue a familiar pacifier]].

Back in the present, the kids are thrilled to hear that the story has a happy ending, but Bart is confused: Homer still hasn't told them why there aren't any pictures of Maggie in the family album. Homer explains that there are plenty of pictures, and that he keeps them "where he needs the most cheering up." The episode cuts to a shot of Homer's workstation, where the walls are plastered with dozens of photos of Maggie--along with the plaque, where they have been arranged to cover the letters to form a new message: "DO IT FOR HER."

Then Apu congratulates Homer for the "little bundle of joy", which Homer surmises to be his salary. Next, Moe tells Homer in no uncertain terms that he got Marge pregnant, but Homer believes this is an abstract way of talking about his enjoyment of his job. When he reaches his home, he notices the neighbors have gathered there with presents. He infers that they're ''showering'' Marge with "little, tiny, baby-sized gifts", yet he still blows it all off. It isn't until Maude Flanders congratulates Homer on his new job when he ''finally'' realises that Marge is pregnant with a third child.

Homer decides to tell the story of what happened during Maggie's conception and birth; [[TheNineties "It was a tumultuous time for our nation. The clear beverage craze gave us all a reason to live. The information superhighway showed the average person what some nerd thinks about Star Trek. And the domestication of the dog continued unabated.”]]

Jump back two years ago in 1993. Homer, working at the power plant, finally gets the paycheck that allows him to finish paying off his debts. After taking a few moments to abuse Burns for years of stressful work, Homer quits, and begins his dream job; working at the bowling alley. Marge is unsure of Homer's decision, but the Simpson partriarch explains that it is possible to support the family on his bowling alley paycheck, a theory that seems correct- for now.

Homer and Marge go out to celebrate, and concludes their evening with some "snuggling". However, Marge becomes pregnant because of said evening. Not wanting to upset Homer with the news, Marge, talking it over with her sisters, makes Patty and Selma promise they won't tell Homer. The twins instead tell Springfield's two biggest gossips to spread the word. Walking home one night, Homer is congradulated for the impending birth, but assumes all the fuss is for his new job. It's only after Maude Flanders talks about the bowling alley does he connect the dots.

Knowing he can't provide for three kids with his bowling alley pay, Homer attempts to increase business to get a raise. It fails, and Homer has literally crawl back to Burns for his old job. Burns agrees, and adds salt to the wound by putting up a plaque in Homer's workplace saying, "Don't forget; you're here forever."

Maggie's birth comes, and Homer tries to be happy in spite of the bitterness. But like with the last two Simpson children, Homer's heart melts when he meets Maggie for the first time.

Back in the present, still Bart wonders where Maggie's pictures are. Homer explains that he keeps them where he needs them the most; Strategically placed on the plaque, changing the message to "Do it for her"
