It was the other way around. Spock told Kirk that, statistically, the odds were against them both getting killed.

* Hypocrite: Spock attempts to defy Kirk and have the Horta brought in safely...until Kirk reveals that it's right in front of him. Then Spock has to be ordered not to attack it.

* MoreExpendableThanYou: Spock tries to make this argument, saying that while individually both he and Kirk can be replaced, if ''both'' of them are killed it would be a grevious blow to Starfleet. Kirk ignores him.

* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: One of the best episodes to point this out, as the Horta is the most alien-looking lifeform we ever meet on the series.

* NoSell: One of the miners shot the Horta with a hand phaser (Phaser 1), which didn't even slow it down. Kirk surmises that using phaser pistols (Phaser 2) may be more effective.

Moved Throw It In to new trivia page, then deleted it.

* ThrowItIn: The whole episode. Acrobat/stunt actor [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janos_Prohaska Janos Prohaska]] was promised an episode if he could come up with a convincing alien. He demonstrated the Horta outfit in producer Gene Coon's office and Gene immediately signed off on using it.
