The original series, known among fans as the [[FanNickname Green Jacket series]], was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, with several of the episodes directed by future StudioGhibli co-founders IsaoTakahata and Creator/HayaoMiyazaki. This series is infamous among fans for its TroubledProduction – premiering to low ratings, the original director (Masaaki Ohsumi) was fired after the second episode aired, replaced by Takahata and Miyazaki (working under the label "A-Production"), which caused a rather massive shift in tone halfway through the series. The retool wasn't enough, and the series was cancelled after a single season, although it [[VindicatedByCable gained popularity upon re-airing throughout the mid-1970's]].

Voice actors for the main characters were Creator/YasuoYamada as Lupin, Creator/KiyoshiKobayashi as Jigen, Yukiko Nikaido as Fujiko, Creator/ChikaoOhtsuka as Goemon, and Creator/GoroNaya as Inspector Zenigata. After decades of being officially available only in Japan and [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff Italy]], Discotek released the series on DVD in North America in June 2012. It is also available for streaming on Hulu [[http://www.hulu.com/lupin-the-third-part-1 here.]]

''Shin Lupin III'' (''New Lupin III''), often called the [[FanNickname Red Jacket series]], was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha. Yasuo Yamada, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, and Goro Naya returned to reprise their characters from the first series, while the role of Fujiko was played by Eiko Masuyama (who had played her in the 1969 pilot film), and Makio Inoue played Goemon.

The first 79 episodes were dubbed into English by the now-defunct Creator/{{Geneon}}, who gave the series a tongue-in-cheek semi-GagDub, a move that included changing most of the episode titles to [[JustForPun punny pop-culture references]]; the English titles for these episodes are included in parenthesis. In addition, the two episodes directed by Creator/HayaoMiyazaki (#145 and #155) were released years earlier by the long-shuttered Streamline Pictures as "Tales of the Wolf".

Several episodes of the Geneon dub are now available for streaming on Hulu. [[http://www.hulu.com/lupin-the-third-part-2 Link here.]]

''Lupin III Part III'', also called the [[FanNickname Pink Jacket series]], was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (just like the first two series). It reunited the voice cast from the "Red Jacket" series, and would be the last ''Lupin'' series to air for over a quarter-century. It is also the only one of the four TV series to have never made it to North America at all.

The original series, known among fans as the [[FanNickname Green Jacket series]], was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, with several of the episodes directed by future StudioGhibli co-founders IsaoTakahata and HayaoMiyazaki.

In addition, the two episodes directed by HayaoMiyazaki (#145 and #155) were released years earlier by the long-shuttered Streamline Pictures as "Tales of the Wolf".
