The crew make their escape from Ariel, but things are not done, as Mal quickly twigs to the fact that Jayne was the reason the Feds were even at the hospital and knocks Jayne out with a wrench. Jayne wakes up in the cargo bay airlock of Serenity as the ship is taking off and a confrontation between him and Mal ensues, in which Mal is in full-on PapaWolf mode and vehemently asserts that "you turn on ''any'' of my crew, you turn on ''me!''." The only thing that saves Jayne from being ThrownOutTheAirlock is when he urges Mal to "make something up" and not tell the rest of the crew what he did. Mal lets Jayne off with a deadly warning: "The next time you decide to stab me in the back, have the guts to do it to my face."

You can just hear her saying "THAT's my big brother."

** And then he almost gets ThrownOutAnAirlock once Mal cops wise to what Jayne did in the hospital.

During the infiltration, Simon gets his first CrowningMomentOfAwesome when River alerts him to a patient who is being treated incompetently and is about to die, and Simon, who is posing as a doctor that is not on the Most Wanted List, steps in and takes over the operation, saving the man's life and then chewing out the doctor responsible for the incompetent treatment. When the three of them find the room with the holo-imager, both Simon and Jayne learn a bit of what was done to River at the Academy, including having her amygdala stripped bare to remove her ability to block out anything she feels. Simon is horrified at this revelation, and Jayne shows a few signs that maybe turning them in wasn't such a great idea (or he begins carrying out his original plan at the agreed-upon time). Jayne leads the two away toward a rear entrance, citing a change of plans, and as Jayne and Simon start arguing, River screams and starts babbling. Then the Feds show up.

* BrickJoke: The part that Wash picks up and immediately flings away is the same as the part Mal used to fix the engine in Out Of Gas.

** I wouldn't necessarily say he was ''easily'' [[CoolAndUnusualPunishment for]][[ThrownOutTheAirlock given...]]

* PunchClockVillain: the guards
** Not villains at all, just security guards doing their jobs.

* TheScrounger : Most of the crew does this at the beginning. Notable is Kaylee going through the dump and saying, "Synchronisers ".
* TheStrategist: Simon plans the whole caper. In fact he arguably comes near to being a MagnificentBastard in this one.

* TookALevelInBadass: Simon is doing this throughout the episode.

* LickingTheBlade: Jayne does this in the beginning of the episode... who knew something so unhygienic could look so damn [[FetishFuel sexy.]]

** {{Irony}}: Had Jayne been given his award, he probably would have been in the main room when the Hand of Blue arrived and thus gotten zapped like everyone else. By double-crossing Jayne, [=McGinnis=] unintentionally saved Jayne's life!

* RefugeinAudacity: the two most wanted fugitives in the Alliance going in the front door amid wanted posters for them and the possibility of meeting one of Simon's schoolmates.

** And again, does ''enforcing the law'' count as Villainy? The only borderline-villainous thing that particular creep did was trick Jayne, and cops do things like that all the time.
** The Alliance's policy that he was carrying out was villainous and the formal and LawfulGood sounding words he used hides that. That's what it means to be a VillainWithGoodPublicity . The fact that that particular cop didn't know just means that the Alliance's publicity was good enough to fool their own mooks.
** Well, the marshal ''is'' shown to be corrupt and greedy when he stiffs Jayne on the money.

* ValuesDissonance: Simon "pays" his compatriots by telling them where there was expensive medicine to plunder, "that would be restocked within hours." To be fair to him he probably thought it DirtyBusiness though he never admitted it. But he could be a WellIntentionedExtremist about River's interests, occasionally.
** As evidenced from ''Safe'' and ''The Train Job'' maybe he decided that stealing from people with a ton of money to give medicine to the poor who do ''not'' have the same kind of health care as those living on Ariel was not such a bad thing. It's not as if he was stealing money.
*** Oh yeah, I'm sure he thought stealing from rich people was hunky-dory. It's not as if his ''sister'' had grown up in a mansion was it? Oh wait.
**** Do bear in mind, that his wealthy family turned their backs on him and her when it started getting dangerous, I doubt there was much they could have one, but they didn't even try.
*** As far as I can remember he just acted as medic for the robbery in TheTrainJob, and the CattleDrive in {{Safe}} was smuggling which is stealing from TheGovernment, which he didn't have fond feelings for. Simon is usually a bystander in actual criminal activities and there is no reason to assume he likes them very much.
