If that wasn't enough, at the end of the episode he crushes 16's head and remarks that he never had a soul for no reason other than to spite Gohan. Just to rub salt in the wound comments that 16 didn't have a soul.

When Gohan does eventually snap for the final significant time, it's played fully seriously.
