* TheCameo: The Dalek prop for Dalek Sec makes an appearance. The BBC webguide states that, in-story, this was a deposed Supreme Dalek.

** Something of a production RunningGag, every new companion (with the obvious exception of Billie Piper,) has made an early appearance before their run as companion begins (Freema Agyeman in "Army of Ghosts," Karen Gillan in "The Fires of Pompeii," Catherine Tate in "The Runaway Bride" might count.) Jenna-Louise kept the tradition of actors making an EarlyBirdCameo alive here.

** WordOfGod is that one of the reasons the Time War started was because the Dalek's started meddling in their own history, meaning that Skaro was likely brought back shortly before the events of the "Enemy Within" TV Movie. The Tenth Doctor also implied at the height of the War history was changing every few ''seconds''.

* LyingCreator: Moffat stated we wouldn't find out anything about JennaLouiseColeman's character until Christmas. Her appearance in the episode was a complete surprise.
** Deceptive, at least, since there's a good chance he was using ExactWords - no, her character wouldn't show up until Christmas, but no-one said she wouldn't have another role...
** Also, the Doctor ''did'' say that "it's Christmas" a few minutes before she appeared on screen. (See LeaningOnTheFourthWall, above).

* StrangeGirl: Oswin certainly came off as one, what with broadcasting ''Theatre/{{Carmen}}'' in a planetary asylum for insane Daleks to drown out their screaming, [[CasualDangerDialog casually flirting with Rory over the intercom despite being on said planet full of crazy Daleks]], [[DeadpanSnarker snarking]] about the Doctor's looks ([[LanternJawOfJustice especially his chin]]), making souffles and writing to her mother about them despite them always going wrong. Heck, [[spoiler:she even still believes she's still human, despite having been converted into a Dalek long ago. And the souffles are all in her head]].

* EurekaMoment: Amy realizing the unfortunate implications of the Nanocloud converting everything "living or dead" into Dalek zombies during the Doctor's explanation of the technology.

* PoorCommunicationKills: [[spoiler:Or at least ends marriages. Amy throws Rory out upon realizing she can't have kids, and somehow doesn't think to actually tell him this, leaving him understandably bitter after a couple months or so of wondering what the hell he did wrong.]]

** The cut to the Doctor fixing his bowtie, after Amy realizes the Doctor has helped to fix the relationship she told him earlier was "not one of those things you can fix like you fix your bowtie".
