->“It’s acting that way because of who wrote it. Bradley raped her daughter and her sons. Bradley believed that bloodlines and special genetics were superior to actually learning or being taught a good moral code. Bradley knew society considered incest and pedophilia to be wrong... but she hated it.\\
“And so she wrote this, no doubt hoping that the cover of ‘it’s a different time and culture!’ would disguise that she agreed with it. I’d bet good money that most readers of the time accepted this ‘heartwarming’ reunion because they thought that there really was just a difference of viewpoints and the two should just let bygones be bygones. Hell, the All The Tropes page for this bookas well as this wiki’s own page lists Viviane as having blue and orange morality! People really think it’s just a case that she’s perfectly well-meaning but operating under a different view of morality than most people!\\
“(None of the synonyms for ‘well-intentioned’ apply to the woman who deliberately plotted the drugged rape of her niece and nephew, who is also using magic to curse an aspiring mother with infertility because said mother wouldn’t raise her child in Viviane’s religion, and whose only objection to having that same aspiring mother raped and impregnated by her brutal maybe-brother as a forced divorce was that no woman would help Avalon do this. ->Since the nuclear stalemate became apparent, the Governments of East and West have adopted the policy which Mr. Dulles calls 'brinkmanship'. This is a policy adapted from a sport which, I am told, is practiced by some youthful degenerates. This sport is called 'Chicken!'. It is played by choosing a long straight road with a white line down the middle and starting two very fast cars toward each other from opposite ends. Each car is expected to keep the wheels on one side of the white line. As they approach each other, mutual destruction becomes more and more imminent. If one of them swerves from the white line before the other, the other, as they pass, shouts 'Chicken!', and the one who has swerved becomes an object of contempt. As played by irresponsible boys, this game is considered decadent and immoral, though only the lives of the players are risked. But when the game is played by eminent statesmen, who risk not only their own lives but those of many hundreds of millions of human beings, it is thought on both sides that the statesmen on one side are displaying a high degree of wisdom and courage, and only the statesmen on the other side are reprehensible. This, of course, is absurd. Both are to blame for playing such an incredibly dangerous game. The game may be played without misfortune a few times, but sooner or later it will come to be felt that loss of face is more dreadful than nuclear annihilation. The moment will come when neither side can face the derisive cry of 'Chicken!' from the other side. When that moment is come, the statesmen of both sides will plunge the world into destruction.

Actually, I wanted that process of assumptions-breaking-down to be simultaneous, so while we learn that Laurent is more than simply a villain, we also learn that Damen is not harmlessly heroic. That was harder to do, to be honest. Particularly when I was writing the first book, I underestimated the power of protagonist-centric morality. Readers would just accept Damen's view of the world because he was the protagonist. I had to work hard to break it down. There's a scene in Captive Prince where Damen explains the slavery system in his country. He explains how well the slaves are treated, how well the system works. It was supposed to demonstrate how mired he was in his cultural context, but instead, a lot of readers simply bought it. "If Damen's saying it's okay, then it's okay." I learned that the protagonist's moral viewpoint is frighteningly powerful.\\

I had to include this quote somewhere. I’m just not sure whether it belongs here, on Never My Fault, or on Moral Dissonance.

to:

None of them.)”
