* VideoGame/HorizonForbiddenWest: The near-pacifistic Utaru have surprisingly good relations with their neighbors, the BloodKnight Tenakth. Apparently there were some conflicts between them generations ago, but nothing major; by all appearances, the Tenakth were too busy fighting each other to attack other tribes. Twenty years ago, when the Carja started raiding everyone around them for blood sacrifices, the Tenakth led what few Utaru who wished to fight, and even lent some of their veteran soldiers to teach the Utaru in their homeland how to defend themselves.

* VideoGame/BaldursGate 2: CHARNAME can strike up a friendship with a surprisingly cordial beholder. It helps that said beholder is a LawfulNeutral DeadpanSnarker instead of an AxCrazy monster like most of his kin.
** Minsc and Keldorn can also fall into this. Keldorn is a fifty-something father of two, and a LawfulGood paladin. Minsc is a ChaoticGood berserker with a ManChild streak a mile wide. However, they bond around a mutual appreciation of kicking evil up the arse.
** Korgan Bloodaxe is remarkably good at forming these with good members of the party, despite being a ChaoticEvil psychopathic dwarven berserker with an abysmal charisma. Crude come-ons aside he's remarkably respectful to Mazzy Fentan (who is LawfulGood and the closest thing you get to a halfing paladin), respects Minsc and Valygar for their warrior provess, enjoys exchanging VolleyingInsults with Imoen and listening to Jan Jansen's stories, and even tries to work with Edwin for their mutual benefit (although the latter doesn't last long).

After the first act being laden with friction, they even out at VitriolicBestBuds, to the point where handing Isabela over earns Rivalry points with Aveline.

Wesker's a physically imposing badass who wears his SunglassesAtNight, and rarely emotes unless it's time for a scenery chewing speech. Yet despite all that (and their shared sociopathy), there is every indication that they maintained a genuine friendship, having been college buddies and coworkers prior to Wesker's defection and Birkin's subsequent mutation and death. During VideoGame/ResidentEvil0, Wesker even confides in Birkin as an equal, something he's otherwise never known to do even with his closes allies, putting enough trust and faith in the scientist to be completely open about his plans to abandon Umbrella. As late as Wesker's Report, the typically unemotional Wesker expresses both extreme distaste for Birkin's killer, U.S.S. agent HUNK, and a continued respect for his former colleague's ability, which is unusual for him.

* The titular characters of VideoGame/BenAndEd are a traumatized kid and a zombified athletic adult respectively, and the game is about trying to reunite the two. .
* Gorath and Owyn from VideoGame/BetrayalAtKrondor certainly qualify. A taciturn 260-ish dark elf clan chieftain and a bubbly 19-year-old human mage apprentice?
* VideoGame/BlazblueCrossTagBattle: Yosuke (from VideoGame/Persona 4) is treated as a joke by the rest of the cast: Linne (VideoGame/UnderNightInBirth) thinks he's an annoying kid who's way in over his head and Jin (Franchise/Blazblue) wants to cut his tongue out. However he gets along really well with Makoto Nanaya.
* VideoGame/BugFables: Minor characters Seb and Madeleine are a StiffUpperLip cicada butler and his spunky LadyOfAdventure cicada killer wasp mistress, but they get along well and are very committed to each other's happiness.
* In the Reverie DLC for VideoGame/CastlevaniaLordsOfShadow, we have Gabriel and Laura. He's a gruff monster hunter who was tasked in the main game with slaying the titular Lords of Shadow, one of whom was Laura's vampire "mother" Carmilla. She's a vampire who, not long ago, was trying to kill him. Yet somehow over the course of Reverie, they form a sufficiently close friendship that, after Laura's death, Gabriel goes on to build a tomb for her in the castle, right next to the one housing his beloved wife.
* VideoGame/Deltarune: Lancer, the HarmlessVillain BigBadWannabe ManChild Darkner, and Susie, the genuinely terrifying bully Lightner, one the latter pulls a brief FaceHeelTurn and joins Lancer's side. Lancer idolizes her for being as threatening as he wishes to be, and Susie quickly becomes fiercely protective of him. This mutual friendship is what inspires both of them to pull Heel Face Turns and rejoin the side of good.
* VideoGame/DevilMayCry: Dante is the son of the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, a demon that slaughtered the armies of the Underworld and sealed away the demon emperor Mundus to protect humanity, while Trish is an artificial demon created by Mundus for the express purpose of getting Dante killed. And yet, by the end of the first game, these two are close enough for Dante to entrust her with the power of Sparda, her creator's greatest enemy.
%%* VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy has so many odd friendships, it requires a list onto itself.
%%** Warrior of Light and Prishe.
%%** Zidane and Bartz makes sense enough. But add Squall to the mix?
%%** Terra and Cloud.
%%** Kain and Tifa.
%%** Laguna and Cloud Of Darkness?
* Franchise/DragonAge:
** Most characters from VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins make pretty odd friends with at least one other party member.
*** Morrigan and just about anybody, given her admitted Jerkass "difficulties" with forming friendships. It's especially evident with a more noble-minded male Warden who does not start her romance.
*** If both are recruited and survive to the end of the game, Wynne and Shale form one of these. They even travel to the Tevinter Imperium together to find a way to restore Shale to mortal form. They're apparently still friends during the events of Literature/Asunder until
*** Sten is an odd one as well. Leliana seems genuinely curious about him and his people, and is able to call him a softy with little more reaction than a mild grumble; he enjoys her singing and surprisingly doesn't harass her about being a devout Andrastian, despite atheism being built into the Qunari language. Alistair also admits that Sten isn't as bad as he'd expect, and though the game doesn't show Sten thinking too highly of Alistair in return, ComicBook/ThoseWhoSpeak reveals he's warmed up enough to call him kadan. Sten and Ogren also engage in some friendly verbal sparring; bonus points to this one for the two of them being the tallest and shortest members of your party by a good margin.
*** Zevran was originally hired to kill the Warden. Naturally, this can result in a bit of tension, though to him it was all just business, NothingPersonal. If befriended, he becomes intensely loyal.
** In the Awakening expansion, the Warden gets a bunch of new and equally odd friends. It's perhaps very telling that the least odd friendship the Warden can form is with a man who originally shows up to murder them.
** Just about any of the friendships between your allies in VideoGame/DragonAgeII. A possible odd friendship between the PC and one of his/her allies is a mage Hawke with the mage-hating elf Fenris if you decide to pursue a friendship.
*** Fenris will also develop a very friendly bond with Bethany, Hawke's sister, if Hawke is a warrior or rogue. Although he continues to dislike every other mage the party encounters, he observes that Bethany is a good, kind individual who is strong enough to control her magic without supervision.
*** Aveline and Snarky!Hawke in particular have this type of friendship. Aveline is a highly disciplined former soldier and Guard Captain, who's professional at nearly all times, while Snarky!Hawke is an independently wealthy part-time hero who refuses to take anything seriously.
----> Aveline: Not now, Hawke!
*** Aveline gets another relationship like this with Isabela. Aveline is LawfulGood, believes heavily in monogamy, and becomes the chief of police in Act 1, Isabela is a pirate captain who ReallyGetsAround and isn't so much retired as temporarily devoid of a ship. After the first act being laden with friction, they even out at VitriolicBestBuds, to the point where handing Isabela over earns Rivalry points with Aveline.
---->Isabela: And if I called you a mannish, awkward, ball-crushing do-gooder, you'd say...\\
Aveline: (warmly) Shut up, whore.\\
Isabela: That's my girl.
*** Snarky!Hawke is also capable of forming an admittedly brief friendship with Flemeth, a nigh-immortal witch who predates the foundation of Ferelden and possibly that of the Chantry, mostly because she finds Hawke's sarcasm entertaining.
** VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition continues the trend of unexpected friendships.
*** Sera is loud, brash, and selfish. Blackwall is quiet, reserved, and selfless. They end up bonding over their juvenile sense of humor and dislike of the aristocracy.
*** The harsh and dutiful Cassandra gets along surprisingly well with the laid back and boisterous Iron Bull.
*** Cullen is a former Templar and Dorian is a nobleman from a country ruled by mages. The player can stumble on them playing chess together. Additionally, if a female Inquisitor romances Cullen, Dorian is one of the only characters to comment on it -- he thinks it's adorable.
*** Combining the above two, Bull and Dorian. Dorian is a cultured, well-dressed mage. Bull is a perpetually shirtless warrior from a culture that cuts out its mages' tongues and chains them to posts. Additionally, their respective cultures have been at war for centuries. They can get so close they become lovers if the Inquisitor doesn't pursue one of them first.
* VideoGame/DragonQuestIV:
** Seasoned, perpetually serious soldier Ragnar [=McRyan=] and cute, perpetually smiling curative monster Healie become friends during Ragnar's chapter.
** Serious, quiet cleric Kyril and exuberant, flamboyant dancer Maya are implied to have one in the remakes, although how much of this is just her teasing him isn't specified.
* Franchise/TheElderScrolls
** In Morrowind, 4000-year-old wizard Divayth Fyr has struck up a couple of these. Despite being a former member of Great House Telvanni which openly supports and encourages slavery, Fyr freed all of this slaves. One Argonian slave, Vistha-Kai, refused to leave and now serves as the warden of Fyr's "Corprusarium," a safe haven for those suffering from the Corprus Disease. Fyr admits that Vistha-Kai isn't much for conversation, but he does his job well and makes a good sparring partner for Fyr and his "daughters". Additionally, Fyr has befriended Yagrum Bagarn, [[spoiler:the last living Dwemer]]. Bargarn was in an undescribed "outer realm" when whatever calamity occurred that and returned to find them gone. He caught the Corprus Disease shortly after and ended up in Fyr's Corprusarium. The two have become friends and Bagarn spends his time tinkering with and fixing up any Dwemer artifacts Fyr finds and brings him.
** Between the events of Oblivion and Skyrim, the Altmer-led Aldmeri Dominion formed one of these with the Khajiit of Elsweyr. The Dominion preferred to get the Khajiit to join as vassals by aiding them to develop trust rather than through conquest. Of course, there are self-serving aspects for the Altmer with this arrangement, they either exaggerated or blatantly lied about certain accomplishments in order to appeal to the Khajiit. Additionally, how much of the friendship is benevolence on the part of the Altmer and how much is the Altmer wanting to avoid the wrath of a race widely considered the CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass of Tamriel is up for reasonable debate.
** During the same time period as the above example, the Nords of Skyrim and the Orcs (Orsimer) have seemingly forged such a friendship. While the Nords typically despise all races of Mer (Elves), they've bonded somewhat with the Orcs over their mutual respect for strong leaders, affinity for smithing, and love of fighting. Following the sack of Orsinium, the (short-lived) Orc home province between High Rock and Hammerfell, Orcs have set up numerous strongholds dotting Skyrim where they are allowed to live in relative peace by the Nords.
* VideoGame/FireEmblemPathOfRadiance and its sequel VideoGame/FireEmblemRadiantDawn have Shinon and Gatrie, who are HeterosexualLifePartners despite being completely opposite in personality. Shinon is an arrogant, unfriendly and independent DeadpanSnarker and ColdSniper who is most often OnlyInItForTheMoney, while Gatrie is a cheerful and friendly BoisterousBruiser and CasanovaWannabe whose somewhat scatterbrained nature means that he's often taken advantage of by the women he tries to woo.
* Franchise/KingdomHearts: Stoic and brooding swordsman Leon with peppy ninja Yuffie.
* VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters: Shen Woo is a BloodKnight while Duo Lon is a PrincelyYoungMan. They're still as close as their clashing personalities and goals allow.
* Mission, the CuteMonsterGirl ClassyCatBurglar, and Zaalbar the proud Wookiee of VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublic. Also, the player character (basically a hired mercenary ) with anybody, except maybe Canderous and HK-47.
** The friendship between Bastila Shan and the PC is a particularly notable example. Bastila is an uptight Jedi Padawan who is always ready to lecture about the dangers of falling to the dark side, and it is possible to play the PC as someone who, even as a new Jedi recruit, is unable to take anything seriously. The friendship that forms between them becomes even more remarkable considering they are not just very different in personality, but also [[spoiler:former enemies: the laughably evil former Dark Lord of the Sith and the Jedi who saved his/her life.]]
* In VideoGame/LifeIsStrange, the main character Max is a quiet, dorky, and self-admitting hipster. One of the member of the Vortex Club, a social circle she despise, is Dana, a school-spirited, sociable, and as Max would say, "the perfect cheerleader archetype." Despite both being in different cliques, they are surprisingly very friendly towards each other, with Max admitting that she is very nice and friendly and Dana constantly inviting Max to many of the school's events.
* VideoGame/LostHome: The main characters are an armadillo and a snake. Initially, the snake sees the armadillo as prey, but after a fire destroys their home, the two are forced to team up in their search for a new one.
* Shepard of the Franchise/MassEffect series with pretty much anybody apart from Ashley and Kaidan (fellow Alliance Marines -- work friends, basically) and maybe Jacob and Garrus. Mercenaries, an elderly asari, a near-sociopathic biotic, a deeply religious Drell assassin, even a Krogan clone.
** Shepard and Liara isn't at all far-fetched. Pressly and Tali, on the other hand...
** Shepard's friendship with Garrus alone isn't necessarily odd. However, given some of the tensions that still exist between humans and the Turians, the closeness of it is. Garrus' unquestionable and unfailing loyalty to Shepard is one of his most notable character traits.
** Joker and EDI, at least after . The two even get a in the third game after .
** Miranda and anyone, given her usual attitude towards friendship. Especially Jack when they reach VitriolicBestBuds status in the Citadel DLC for 3, given that in the second game they come very close to killing each other at least once, possibly more often.
** Tali and as the latter comes from , and the former does show signs of still being bitter about that.
** In the third game, Mordin and Wrex (if they're alive) get along surprisingly well, especially considering the fact that [[spoiler:Mordin was responsible for upgrading the Genophage that drove the Krogans to near-extinction.]] At the end of the Tuchanka arc, , Wrex suggests naming one of his and Eve's newborns after him (maybe a daughter).
** Assuming they meet in the Citadel DLC, Javik and Zaeed become friends. The fact that Javik is a Precursor GalacticConqueror minus an army who looks down on everyone, the idea he becomes friends with anyone is surprising.
** Wrex and Garrus, given that the krogan relationship with Turians has hovered somewhere around "simmering hostility" for a millennium and a half. Given that the Krogan had reached the moons of the Turian homeworld when the Turians deployed the genophage, it's hardly surprising that both sides would cheerfully strangle each other, and yet:
--->Wrex: Damn it, out of all of the turians out there, I had to make friends with one who thinks he's funny.\\
Garrus: Well how do you think I feel? I'm supposed to hate you, but instead you warmed my heart with your winning personality.\\
Wrex: I could throw a few salarians off a cliff if it'll make you feel better.
** If Paragon Shepard has cured the genophage in the third game, by the time the credits roll, humanity is in a strange position where IOweYouMyLife the Krogan are their staunchest allies, particular if Wrex is still alive to rule the krogan. They even offer to take in human refugees by offering space on Tuchanka.
* TechnicalPacifist VideoGame/MegaManX and Zero. They are created by , and add the fact that .
* VideoGame/MetalGear: The laconic, tough-as-nails soldier Snake and the geeky OmnidisciplinaryScientist and all around NiceGuy Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich, a startlingly genuine friendship forged over shared ideals.
%%* The VideoGame/MetalGearSolid series has Snake and Otacon.
* Franchise/Metroid: Samus Aran and Anthony Higgs in VideoGame/MetroidOtherM. Samus is a somber BountyHunter of few words who left the Federation military after falling out with her commanding officer, while Anthony is a cheerful and energetic point man who still works with said CO. Samus nonetheless considers Anthony one of her closest friends.
* Competent and suave Petra of VideoGame/MinecraftStoryMode is easily the best fighter in town, yet she's not above befriending adorkable Jesse. Their friendship is initially very lopsided -- with the latter being overenthusiastic while Petra is mostly just embarrassed by the attention -- but by the time Assembly Required rolls around, it's become very obvious that Petra considers Jesse her closest friend.
* If VideoGame/MortalKombatDeadlyAlliance is indication, Goro and Kitana are old friends, to the point that she attended his funeral at Kuatan Palace to mourn for him after he was slain by Noob Saibot sometime between 4 and DA.
* Ataru and Usagi from VideoGame/MrDriller; one is a human and the latter is an Alien bunny whose original mission was to invade earth, but then his ship crashed and Ataru saved his life.
* VideoGame/MyCafe: Nerdy Bill strikes an unusual friendship with the resident joker Ben, to the point that he wants the latter to be his best man for his wedding. What makes this even more odd is that Ben is actually Bill's fiance's ex-husband. Mary is quite appalled when the player first tells her about Bill's decision to make Ben his best man, as the two are not AmicableExes at this point.
* In VideoGame/NeverwinterNights: Hordes of the Underdark, Deekin makes friends with everyone. Even the tiefling scared of his UnstoppableRage. Even the reformed Drow assassin. Everyone.
** In Tales of Arterra, your entire party. Persey is a Succubus, Evanine is and on the extreme-altruist end of NeutralGood besides, and Montador is an unexpectedly chivalrous BloodKnight. And yet they all end up the best of friends.
** Most notably Bran and Rizzen, but also possibly Vico and the Princess, Rizzen and the Princess and Rizzen and Pia in VideoGame/ADanceWithRogues. For that matter, seeing as most of the group joins up to help out the Princess and most don't really like anyone else, the entire group counts.
* Khelgar and Neeshka or Elanee in VideoGame/NeverwinterNights2, so long as you get his influence high enough to mitigate his FantasticRacism.
** Lawful!Knight-Captain and Neeshka; she has a tendency to grumble that she doesn't understand him/her at all yet still sticks her neck out for her boss on numerous occasions.
** Chaotic!Knight-Captain and Safiya in Mask of the Betrayer, especially apparent whenever the Knight-Captain makes a silly remark.
* VideoGame/Overwatch: One of the closest (And weirdest) set of buddies is Tracer and Winston. Tracer is a spunky and hyper ex-test pilot/turned Overwatch operative from England. Winston is a hyper-intelligent, reserved guy...on top of being a talking gorilla from the moon. Despite their marked differences, they're two of the games closest friends.
* Franchise/ResidentEvil gives us a villainous example with Albert Wesker and William Birkin. Wesker's a physically imposing badass who wears his SunglassesAtNight, and rarely emotes unless it's time for a scenery chewing speech. Birkin's a skinny MadScientist who panics easily and rarely stops talking. Wesker is likely ity; Birkin is HappilyMarried and has a young daughter whom he honestly seems to care about. Wesker did Umbrella's wetwork before jumping ship; Birkin's their top researcher and almost never leaves the lab. Wesker is confident of his own superiority; Birkin's a paranoid who constantly needs to reinforce his ego. Yet despite all that (and their shared sociopathy), there is every indication that they maintained a genuine friendship, having been college buddies and coworkers prior to Wesker's defection and Birkin's subsequent mutation and death. As late as Wesker's Report, the typically unemotional Wesker expresses both extreme distaste for Birkin's killer, U.S.S. agent HUNK, and a continued respect for his former colleague's ability, which is unusual for him.
* VideoGame/ShadowHearts has a few including Koudelka, Edward and James; Anastasia and Joachim [[spoiler: ; Yuri and Albert.]]
* VideoGame/SoulSeries: Tira is an AxeCrazy servant of Nightmare, while Pyrrha is PurityPersonified, much like her mother, Sophitia. Not to mention the fact that Tira kidnapped Pyrrha when she was only a child after framing her for murder. Despite this, and despite the fact that Pyrrha at first refuses to actually work with Tira, she often considers her the only friend she has. Unfortunately, Tira only uses this to her advantage, and
* VideoGame/StardewValley: Sam and Sebastian are very close despite being polar opposites: Sam is a an outgoing friendly guy who plays guitar and drums, while Sebastian is a basement-dwelling EmoTeen immersed in comic books and video-games.
* Franchise/StreetFighter:
** Dan and Sakura. Dan is the original JokeCharacter. Sakura is a young girl who, frankly, could kick Dan's face in without trying. Dan is under the delusion that he's Sakura's teacher. She seems to genuinely like him despite this and plays along with it. The two of them are also friends with Blanka, the green beast man.
** Though it's only shown in her arcade ending in Ultra, Elena has the ability to make friends with anyone. Including Akuma, the biggest badass antagonist in the entire series!
* VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsV: Despite their vastly different attitudes and demeanor, Audrey and Ange still strike up a close friendship. In no small part due to them both being a princess belonging to a group they don't support. Momoka even notes the similarities between them.
-->Momoka: It occurred to me a while back, but it could it be you're a, well, a person of high social standing?\\
Audrey: What?\\
Momoka: I get that impression every time I see how you act, how you carry yourself. I feel as though I'm watching Angelise.
* VideoGame/TalesSeries:
** Genis and Lloyd from VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia. The genius child prodigy and the village idiot, somehow being such good friends that when Lloyd is Banished, Genis demands to be exiled with him.
** Estelle and Rita from VideoGame/TalesOfVesperia. A prim and proper book-smart princess with little worldly experience, and an aggressive mage who's big on getting stuff done on her own when no one can help.
* VideoGame/TeamFortress2:
** TheMedic and the Heavy are widely known as being closer than any of the other classes -- mostly because of how well they work together in battle, and several in-game lines coming from the Heavy (offering to take bullets for the Medic with "Get behind me, doctor!", "You are great, doctor!", "I love this doctor!"). One of them is a German doctor implied to hail from the Nazi era (although he's confirmed as not being involved with the party), exhibiting fairly Camp mannerisms, the other a Russian testosterone-poisoned BoisterousBruiser who enjoys calling everyone and anyone "cowards" and "babies". How strong is the Heavy's fondness of the Medic? The Medic calls the Heavy a baby in the "Meet the Medic" video while pinching his cheek. Not only does he survive, he actually comes out of it without a scratch.
** The Pyro and the Engineer. Like Heavy and Medic, their personalities appear to be opposites, but they appear to be close friends in and out of battle. Pyro is a Cloudcuckoolander, and Engineer is a down-home SouthernFriedGenius who appears to be the CloudcuckoolandersMinder. Even knowing the Pyro is, well, a PyroManiac, he still invites him to his house and reads him a Christmas story in one update comic. In gameplay, the Pyro is very good at rooting out Engineer's hard counter the Spy. They can also equip a melee weapon called The Homewrecker that allows them to remove Spy's sappers from Engineer's buildings, an ability only usually reserved for the Engineer himself. In the community Pyro's that tend to equip The Homewrecker are affectionately nicknamed "Pybros."
* Neil and Eva from VideoGame/ToTheMoon, though some people view them as more than "friends".
* VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou: Career driven Uzuki Yashiro and laid back Koki Kariya.
* In VideoGame/Warframe the Grineer and Corpus, the ruling powers of the Origin System, hate each other with an intense passion, to the point that the Steel Meridian and the Perrin Sequence are violently opposed, even though they're both trying to help the oppressed civilian populace. Against this background, the greatest bromance in the game is Darvo Bek, a rogue Corpus trader, and Clem, a Grineer clone with the 'flaw' of free will (and a limited vocabulary).
* VideoGame/Yakuza has the weird (and somewhat belligerent) friendship between Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima; Kiryu is a stoic NiceGuy who generally wants to keep his head down, while Majima is an AxCrazy BadBoss always itching to get into fights. Still, the two greatly respect each other's fighting skills, and Majima is always happy to help Kiryu with whatever problem he's dealing with at the time.
