* EverybodyCries: Subverted in the episode, "Tanks for the Memories." When Rainbow Dash sobs knowing that Tank has to leave her to hibernate, the others join in....except for Twilight and AppleJack. We then learn from Pinkie Pie that she was crying because Twilight wasn't and that [=Applejack=] "cries on the inside."
-->''(nearly every pony cries when we see Applejack taking off her hat)''
--> '''Twilight''': You, too?!
--> '''Applejack''': Nope, I'm good."

* GirlsNeedRoleModels: One of the biggest messages the show has to offer is that there is no wrong way to be a girl.

Added DiffLines:

* InformedSpecies: Most of the characters just barely resemble ponies, instead looking more like mutated toy-breed dogs with cat ears. While male ponies have muzzles that have some semblance of a real horse's muzzle shape, female ponies have muzzles shaped more like that that of mouse lemurs and galagos (or bushbabies). [[TropesAreTools However, this makes them look]] ''[[RidiculouslyCuteCritter adorable]]''.

* TheGoodGuysAlwaysWin: As to be expected from an idealistic child-friendly TV-Y show like this, No matter [[DarkestHour how dire the situation]], or how powerful, threatening or seemingly unstoppable or infallible the villains become, the heroes will ''always'' prevail. [[TropesAreTools Not necessarily a bad thing of course]].

Always. So you basically know how the whole situation is going [[ForegoneConclusion to end]] ahead of time. However, the show still manages to keep up the interest anyway by offering storytelling twists in other ways, proving that this is [[TropesAreTools Not not necessarily a bad thing of course]].thing]].

Added DiffLines:

* HybridOverkillAvoidance: If two ponies of different types have children, the children will be one or the other instead of a cross. Ponies of mixed ancestry can produce children of other types, for instance two Earth ponies had one unicorn and one Pegasus foal. Alicorns (with the traits of all three) are made, not born, with one known exception.

Added DiffLines:

* FakeWizardry: Played with in the episode "Magic Duel". Twilight Sparkle, a magical unicorn prodigy, defeats her rival, Trixie (who currently was using an [[AmplifierArtifact Amplifier]] ArtifactOfDoom to cast more powerful magic spells), by using a useless MagicFeather trinket and stage magic tricks to simulate even more powerful magic that Trixie was unable to do and fool her into taking off the Artifact to get the MagicFeather (and therefore removing her powerful magic amplifier).

Added DiffLines:

* InvisibleParents:
** So far of the main cast, only the parents of Twilight Sparkle (whose parents were mysteriously absent for most of their son's wedding episode but appear at the end, as well as in flashbacks), Rarity, and Pinkie Pie have been shown on screen (and possibly Rainbow Dash's dad, in a rather vague flashback), while WordOfSaintPaul confirms Applejack's parents to be dead. Fluttershy's parents are not seen or mentioned until Season 6 where they appear along with Fluttershy brother.
** Outside the six main characters, this trope is played very much straight with Scootaloo, leading to fan theories that she may be an orphan and that she wants Rainbow Dash to treat her like sister because she never had a family. In season 4, the house she lives in is shown, looking pretty ordinarily, but still no parent in sight. It is even more noticeable when [[spoiler:they are absent when their daughter celebrates getting her Cutie Mark.]]
