** For a real-life example, the author of the manga, Takako Shimura. Many people would be surprised to learn that such a sensitive issue such as transsexuals would be approched by someone who is essentially a Crazy Cat Lady who lives in what she believes to be a ''haunted house.''

It\'s particularly important to drop the \"Nitori\"/\"Nitorins\" when Maho\'s referenced, too.

Also leaving off \"Nitorin\" since tha\'ts a nickname and one only a couple of people use at that. In hindsight, I\'m thinking that, while it\'s not normally one, the meta nature of the Pronoun Trouble in this case should probably place it in the YMMV section.

* GenderVocabularySlip: Nitorin & Takatsuki once noticed that Nitori refers to 'himself' with the pronoun "boku" which is used by boys and masculine girls, while Takatuski refers to 'herself' as "watashi" which is gender neutral and more formal, even while dressed as their correct genders. They decide not to change this though as they agree it suits them, because Nitori is a tough girl, and Takatsuki a delicate boy.

* PronounTrouble: Meta example. There's been discussion on the wiki about whether to refer to the transgender characters by their biological sex (Nitorin is "he" & Takatsuki is "she") or by their correct mental genders (Nitorin is "she" & Takatsuki is "he"). The general consensus is to simply match what's used in-story (Shuuichi "he" / Yoshino "she"). Yuki is more straightforward, as she lives as a woman, is implied to have had surgery, and everyone in-story refers to her as "she" even after knowing her original gender. What is used in the manga technically shouldn't control how the audience refers to them because we have more knowledge about them than other characters within the series, and even though they are still closeted there is no good excuse not to respect their proper genders when we have the information to know better, "getting the surgery" is not a factor when deciding if you should call someone by the correct pronouns, and is a cissexist sentiment.

I\'m not about to start an Edit War over this, but at the same time in the interest of pragmatism I\'m leaving off the Shuichi/she Yoshino/he stuff. Still, the last paragraph is otherwise a good point to bear in mind.

* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Beginning at high school, Chiba stops wearing pigtails to school. She's wore pigtails ever since she began middle school, though only when she was ''in'' school. She began wearing pigtails when she was at her most sarcastic and depressed, starting around the time her characterization changes for permanently. She's been working on making herself more appealing and less aggressive lately. A more subtle example is Chizuru and Sasa. Chi recently started wearing GirlishPigtails, showing off she's still an immature GenkiGirl. Sasa stopped wearing her pigtails for the first time in years, which makes her come off as trying to mature.

Making it a bit more explicit

Though they do not immediately know it, the two learn they have a shared secret. Nitori dreams he could be a girl, while Takatsuki wants to become a boy. Eventually, both realize their true nature as much as they are able. Nitori wears clothing belonging to his sister and given to him either by girls or Takatsuki. Takastuki gets hold of her older brother's middle school uniform and goes in to town as a boy.

There\'s really no reason to be using \"Nitorin\" here, even if it is a nickname. Though fo rcompromise sake I\'ll use the surname Nitori alone.

Shy, quiet Shuuichi Nitori is not your average eleven year old boy. Nor is the tomboy, Yoshino Takatsuki, your average eleven year old girl. Nitorin-chan enjoys baking snacks as a hobby. Yoshino is known as Takatsuki-kun by all who know her. When Nitorin transfers to his new school, he is sat next to Takatsuki and they become fast friends.

Though they do not immediately know it, the two learn they have a shared secret. Nitorin dreams he could be a girl, while Takatsuki wants to become a boy. Eventually, both give in to these desires as much as they are able. Nitorin wears clothing belonging to his sister and given to him either by girls or Takatsuki. Takastuki gets hold of her older brother's middle school uniform and goes in to town as a boy.

The SliceOfLife tale of Takako Shimura's ''Wandering Son'' (''Hourou Musuko'' in Japanese) follows the lives of Shuuichi, Yoshino, and those closest to them as they wrestle with their impossible desires. The milestones that come with adolescence, the day-to-day occurrences, and everything in between make up the plot while the dreams and secrets of the young cast create its drama.

* AmbiguouslyGay: Several of the characters. Momoko hasn't really shown any interest in boys so far, instead just being extremely clingy toward Chizuru and saying that she "loves" her.
