* After going food shopping in episode 1, Ryoko hands off the bags of groceries to Kyon, then when complaining about her hands being cold, the camera tilts to a Dutch Angle, the same angle in the original series, right before the original Asakura runs at Kyon with a knife, however in Yuki-chan after running toward Kyon she places her hands on his face to warm them up.

* ShipperOnDeck: Ryōko ships Yuki with Kyon. In fact, most of the girls do (even Haruhi, who has some degree of affection for Kyon). ''The Vanishing of Nagato Yuki-chan'' (official English title for ''Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu'') is a SpinOff slice-of-life manga for the ''LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya'' series. The manga is illustrated by Puyo, creator of the original ''Manga/HaruhiChan'' manga, and details the story of a version of the Haruhi ''Disappearance'' AlternateUniverse in which Kyon wasn't transplanted from a universe run by Haruhi; instead, he's living an idle life in the Literature Club at school. Thus, everything is more "normal": Yuki is a ShrinkingViolet, Kyon more of a likable StraightMan, and Ryoko your typical, responsible ClassRepresentative.

However, just because Kyon is happy in his current state doesn't mean everything is perfectly fine: among other things, Yuki has feelings for Kyon (and is [[CannotSpitItOut completely incapable of admitting it to him]]), Ryoko tends to let her over-competitiveness get ahead of her, and even Haruhi herself can't stay away from the picture after she runs into Yuki one night. Soon, the Literature Club is almost where it was originally, with the members of the SOS Brigade once again populating the club, while Haruhi and her crazed search for strange phenomena are once again sparked - and there start to be hints of a LoveTriangle...

An AnimatedAdaptation was announced, and began its broadcast on April 3rd, 2015.

* [[AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil Absurdly Powerful Class Representative]]: Ryoko uses her power as class rep to get the rules bent so Yuki can have a Christmas party (she can't, however, lift the member restriction).

** Ryoko. Simply put, she doesn't try to kill anyone.
** Haruhi, while slightly manipulative and possessing a fairly cavalier attitude toward the rules, is far less of a jerk than in her original series.
* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: InUniverse, to a very large degree.
** Instead of being the listless, indifferent version of Haruhi seen initially in ''Disappearance'', Haruhi is easily sparked back into her excitable nature (in fact she's seen already doing something mysterious in her first talking appearance).
*** It also counts as compared to the original series; despite not having the influence of Kyon in her life (credited most of the time with humanising her), Haruhi here is actually a lot less of a JerkAss than even later on in the series proper, being more of a slightly pushy and (of course) very independent GenkiGirl and occasional CloudCuckooLander. She even has a bit of a [[BigBrotherMentor Big Sister Mentor]] / CoolBigSis dynamic going on with Yuki. This is probably due to the LighterAndSofter tone of this series in comparison with the original (which wasn't exactly DarkerAndEdgier itself, but nevertheless).
*** There are even cases when it's ''Haruhi'' playing the StraightMan to some of the idiosyncrasies of North High students, mostly Ryoko.
*** [[spoiler:Sasaki]] says that Haruhi comes off as completely different to her classmates at Koyouen, seeming like a model student that everyone looks up to, although she does point out that the way Haruhi seems at North High is in all likelihood her true self.
** Ryoko shows no signs of being CuteAndPsycho at all. Instead she's a big-sister figure to Yuki, periodically advising her on how to get along with Kyon, and generally being more of a bossy GenkiGirl who fancies herself a [[ProperLady paragon of proper behavior]].
** Tsuruya is now friends with Ryoko; and Mikuru, due to not being a time traveller with orders, is less of a complete NeutralFemale and does more for herself.
** Koizumi is less AmbiguouslyGay (though he does retain his YesMan status [[spoiler:because he's completely in love with Haruhi]]).
*** The anime, however, tosses him back to AmbiguouslyGay territory by the time episode 8 rolls around depicting the bathhouse visit, much to Kyon's dismay. Twice Itsuki [[spoiler:invades his space when they're both naked in the men's baths, and even comments on the softness of Kyon's skin, stroking his arm as he does so]].
** Kyon is a NiceGuy, but relatively [[FlatCharacter flat]] and less interesting compared to the cynical and witty DeadpanSnarker in the main series, although this may just be because of the loss of the FirstPersonSmartass; we occasionally see his thoughts, but not the world from his perspective. He gets some of his snark and acid back when around Haruhi, so it's more like he can't bring himself to be sarcastic with Yuki.
*** He's definitely on the way back to his entertaining DeadpanSnarker self in the anime, though he does get a lot more to say while Tomokazu Sugita (and Crispin Freeman) is back to voicing him.
* ArtEvolution: In the initial chapters, Yuki looked very little like her original counterpart and faces were often disproportionate. Furthermore, it was often nigh impossible to distinguish between Ryoko and Tsuruya, particularly in black-and-white. As of the later chapters, everything looks more natural (compare [[http://www.mangareader.net/985-38763-4/nagato-yuki-chan-no-shoushitsu/chapter-1.html this]] and [[http://www.mangareader.net/985-57379-18/nagato-yuki-chan-no-shoushitsu/chapter-12.html this]]).

** Yuki meets Kyon this way, when she was at the library and too shy to ask for help in getting a library card. He ends up helping her to get one so she could borrow a book.
** Koizumi sticks around Haruhi because when he was the NewTransferStudent, he was somewhat ostracized by his classmates. But Haruhi approached him and treated him differently than everyone else. He tells Kyon that [[spoiler:she doesn't seem romantically interested in him, but he's definitely in love with her. Kyon balks due to how crazy Haruhi seems.]]
* BelligerentSexualTension: When Haruhi and Kyon exchange names they sense that they are enemies.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Though Ryoko is [[CuteAndPsycho no longer crazy like in the original]], she still emanates that aura from time to time if she catches Yuki and/or Kyon goofing off instead of studying or working.
* BigEater: Yuki's quite the snacker.
* BlankWhiteEyes: Ryoko displays some after changing her mind about tutoring Kyon when he tries to ask Yuki for some help instead. She strong-arms him into allowing her to tutor him instead of Yuki while displaying this look.
* BlindWithoutEm: Yuki is revealed to be almost entirely blind without her glasses; she's barely able to coherently go to the store and back, and she can't recognize Haruhi's face when she finally sees her without her glasses. Sorry, Kyon, but Yuki needs them.

* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Tsuruya is ridiculously physically fit, similar to her character in the other spinoff, Manga/HaruhiChan, mostly for RuleOfFunny in an otherwise down-to-earth AlternateUniverse. She declares a physically-taxing (for other people) hike to be super-easy, hints that she and her family wrestle bears on vacation, and can even bodily throw someone a surprising distance.

* ChristmasEpisode: The first six chapters are all about preparing for and having the club Christmas party.
* CliffHanger: Chapter 25 has a '''really''' nasty one.
** Chapter 26 as well.
* ClingyJealousGirl: A mild version. Yuki becomes distraught whenever it is hinted Kyon ''miiiiight'' be getting with another girl (it really breaks Yuki when she sees Haruhi giving what turns out to be nothing more than obligation chocolate). However, she seems to take it well when Haruhi says she "doesn't dislike" Kyon. [[spoiler:She, however, takes it somewhat harder when Kyon reunites with Sasaki, whom he's known for a long time, but Mikuru reassures her that it's natural to feel that way and gives her advice on how to "recapture" him]].
* ClubStub: Yuki's literature club is initially about to be shut down due to a lack of members. After a talk with Ryoko, Yuki resolves to get the members needed to keep it going.
* ComplimentBackfire: Haruhi can't bear for Yuki to thank her for being roped into Haruhi's scheme to capture Santa.
* CovertPervert: Ryoko.
* CryCute: Ryoko after she's unable to solve a math problem their class hasn't covered yet, while Haruhi's school was already on the subject.

** In the anime's OP, when the title appears, Yuki runs in, trips, falls face-down, then picks herself up again.

* DareToBeBadass: Ryoko gives a speech like this to Yuki when she hears her club will be closed down, asking if she's willing to do what it takes to protect the club. Ryoko worries she came off too harshly, but Yuki manages to do what is necessary.
* DatePeepers: Two examples in episode 9:
** The first is when Yuki loses a game of old maid, and has to buy drinks and snacks as a penalty. However, it's dark and Kyon doesn't want her going outside alone, so he escorts her. Ryoko, Haruhi, and Koizumi end up tailing the two, when they seemingly embrace for a kiss, causing Ryoko to let out a BigNo. [[spoiler:Subverted when it turns out to have been a very long ImagineSpot she was having.]]
** Played straight a short while later, when Tsuruya tells Kyon and Yuki about a hidden trail that leads to a spot for stargazing. She had planned on doing this with everyone, but changes her mind after seeing Haruhi and Ryoko both sleeping. [[spoiler:The two girls end up waking up, and tailing after them, though Haruhi claims she just wants to go stargazing.]]
* DaydreamSurprise: It initially appears that Yuki lost the card game and has to go shopping, with Kyon accompanying her. However, it turns out to be Ryoko's daydream, and in reality, Ryoko ends up losing.
* DeadpanSnarker: While downplayed to being more of a StraightMan in the manga, Kyon gradually gets this status back in the anime as it goes on, starting with when he meets Haruhi.
* DeathGlare: Although Ryoko's {{Yandere}} KnifeNut tendencies are gone, she is still capable of scaring the hell out of Kyon and Yuki. Notable in that she does it ''with her eyes shut''. Somehow combines it with BishieSparkle [[http://www.mangareader.net/985-39482-9/nagato-yuki-chan-no-shoushitsu/chapter-5.html simultaneously.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: Yuki being told that her Literature Club is to be closed for not having enough members.
* DeterioratesIntoGibberish: Yuki is extremely smart, but when attempting to explain how she got her answers, it devolves into this as a parody of the original series' Yuki's reverse-SQL spells. Ryoko refused to let Kyon get tutored by her because he wouldn't of understood anything she said anyway.
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Chapter 24 starts off with Kyon and Yuki in the forest, face close-ups showing them both blushing, sweaty, eyes closed, and breathing heavily (even the caption goes, "'''WHAT ARE THEY DOING?!'''"). On the next page, it turns out that the two are just struggling with moving through the forest late at night, trying to find a place Tsuruya mentioned.
* DraggedByTheCollar: Hit the club president over the head hard enough to leave a bump then drag her to the clubroom. This sort of behavior shows how much nicer Ryoko is in this series.

** Tsuruya does this once... by throwing Mikuru, breasts-first, at Kyon's head. No one was very amused apart from her. And possibly Haruhi.
** Haruhi does a variation of one, by popping out of a snow covered bush at the park that Yuki and Kyon were walking by. She then forces them to take her someplace she could warm up at.
** Kyon's sister does this to Kyon as punishment for initially not taking her along to the beach.
* EmotionlessGirl: [[spoiler:Chapter 26 has Yuki acting like this instead of her usual self. It turns out that she's trying very hard to cover up her identity amnesia (see below) but doesn't really know how to act like the original Yuki. She remains very low-key even as she grows into her "new" life but notably still falls in love with Kyon and ''tells him''.]]
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Everyone except Kyon can see Yuki's feelings for him.
** MythologyGag, since this is almost exactly how things are in the original series Kyon and Haruhi (see ObliviousToLove).
** Likewise, everyone but Haruhi knows [[spoiler:Koizumi is crushing on her]].
* EvolvingCredits: In the anime version, the credits show scenes of Yuki interacting with all the major characters. [[spoiler:During the 'Disappearance' arc, the characters are all cast in colored silhouettes, with a second Yuki 'watching' them near the end; this signifies how the other Yuki doesn't consider these memories as her own.]]
* {{Fanservice}}: Chapter 2 sees Kyon join the girls for supper. In the middle of conversation, though, Yuki spills all over her shirt, and briefly struggles with Ryoko pulling it off... until they realize Kyon's still there, and he just got half an eyeful.
** Chapter 22 takes place at a [[HotSpringsEpisode Hot Spring]]. You do the math.
** And the BeachEpisode in chapter 36. Though oddly the full-color [[SplashPanel two-page spread]] of all the girls in bikinis came a couple chapters earlier when everyone was instead planning for Tanabata.
** MsFanservice: Mikuru gets a measure of this in the anime.

** Tsuruya throws Mikuru at Kyon in chapter 16 to give her a DynamicEntry. The result is a MarshmallowHell.
** Kyon is subjected to this by Haruhi in episode 3, who tosses him into Tsuruya in order to distract her so the former could "kidnap" Mikuru.
* FunbagAirbag: Kyon is subjected to this after Tsurya tosses Mikuru at him in order to make a DynamicEntry.
* GainaxEnding: The finale makes sure not to resolve anything or develop anyone. Kyon finally works up the courage to confess, but the plot arranges contrived circumstances to drive it to StatusQuoIsGod.
* GamerChick: Yuki, in a trait stolen from ''Manga/HaruhiChan'', which took this from original-series-Yuki's enjoyment of ''Day of Sagittarius''. [[spoiler:The glasses-less Yuki, however, prefers books to games.]]

** Haruhi bemoans having to constantly explain that Koizumi isn't her boyfriend, too. She genuinely doesn't feel anything other than friendship for him, though. [[spoiler:Koizumi wishes it were different.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: PlayedForLaughs in chapter 10/episode 3, when Haruhi "sacrifices" Koizumi and Kyon to Tsuruya in order to kidnap Mikuru. The two guys are easily "defeated", and as the latter prepares to attack Haruhi, she's stopped by a teacher who says jumping down a flight of stairs is risky, and proceeds to scold her. Meanwhile Haruhi uses this opportunity to "steal" Mikuru away to the Literature club.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Yuki and Ryoko; Ryoko is Yuki's neighbor, but visits Yuki's place so often and minds over so many aspects of her life they might as well be related.
** Similarly, Tsuruya and Mikuru, who are always seen together.
** Kyon and Haruhi seem to be moving into [[PlatonicLifePartners the opposite-sex version]]. * HotTeacher: Ryoko changes into this type of outfit when tutoring Kyon. He immediately wonders why she changed her clothes.
* HypercompetentSidekick: Ryoko essentially turns into this. She's not only TheAce at school and housework, but she helps Yuki out quite a bit, and gives her encouragement when the latter is feeling down. [[spoiler:She's still no match for the advanced math studies at Koyouen though, and eventually gives up on a textbook problem that Haruhi goads her into trying to solve.]]
* IdentityAmnesia: [[spoiler:Yuki suffers from this after her accident in Chapter 25. While she still retains her memories, she no longer recognizes them as her own and is effectively [[EmotionlessGirl a completely different person]].]] Handled extremely seriously as [[spoiler:the others try to grapple with what it means to treat the "new" Yuki as a distinct person, who fears being regarded as just a sickness waiting to go away when for her being "cured" sounds frighteningly like ''death''.]]

Despite that, she also helps with the literature club's Christmas party, shares her family's discount at a hot springs and hotel, and hosts everyone at her family's villa and private beach during summer vacation.
* JustFriends: [[spoiler:Haruhi and Koizumi. She was the only one who gave him the time of day as a transfer student locked out of everyone else's cliques, and eventually he fell in love with her.]]
* LastNameBasis: Fairly common; Yuki and Ryoko, despite being long-time friends, typically call each other "Asakura-san" and "Nagato-san," respectively.
* LighterAndSofter: Naturally, being a SliceOfLife romantic comedy.

* LoveTriangle: Hinted to be taking this direction; Haruhi supports Yuki's feelings for Kyon wholeheartedly, but there have been hints of her feelings for Kyon. Recently, it seemed chemistry was starting to bloom when Kyon pulls Haruhi out of the river, and she starts to feel something strange when Kyon pulls a John Smith-esque line. Then there's the Valentine's Day incident where Yuki walks in on Haruhi giving Kyon (obligation) chocolate. It's eventually clarified when Haruhi explains that she does feel a little bit of affection towards Kyon, stating that she "doesn't dislike him" to Yuki.
** Even early on Yuki saw Haruhi as a rival to be emulated, even in impossible things like having a ponytail.
** Later on there is effectively one involving Kyon, Yuki, and [[spoiler:Yuki's amnesiac alternate personality]]. Specifically, [[spoiler:alternate-Yuki actually confesses to Kyon just before Yuki's original identity reasserts itself, and as a result Kyon has finally wised up. ** ''Squared''. First, Yuki walks in on Haruhi giving Kyon chocolate on Valentine's Day, throws away the chocolate ''she'' had been planning to give him, and runs out of the clubroom at full speed. Turns out [[spoiler:Haruhi's is just obligation chocolate, identical to what she then gives Koizumi]]. Then it turns out that [[spoiler:Yuki left out of consideration, and meant to present hers later - she's quite alarmed to discover she ''dropped'' hers]].
** When Kyon asks Ryoko for some tutoring, she tells him that relying on her right away is bad. He then decides to ask Yuki instead, prompting Ryoko to immediately change her mind about the tutoring. When he points out her initial refusal, she strong-arms him into agreeing. Yuki, meanwhile, has an ImagineSpot and thinks the two are secretly sharing a romantic moment, before rationalizing it as NotWhatItLooksLike... just not the NotWhatItLooksLike [[WrongGenreSavvy that actually happened]].
** Ryoko walks into the club room while Kyon and Yuki are supposedly hugging. She then slowly backs out of the room and closes the door. In reality Kyon took Yuki's game away, then jokingly kept it out of reach while she attempted to get it back, bumping into him in the process. A moment later he feeds Yuki a little bit of his food to make up for teasing her, and Ryoko once again walks in on it. She hilariously tries to exit the same way she did the first time.
* ObliviousToLove: Kyon, who isn't all too aware of Yuki's feelings due to the fact Yuki CannotSpitItOut. Or is he...?
** Doubles as a bit of a MythologyGag, since Kyon is infamously (and perhaps intentionally) oblivious to Haruhi's affections for him in the original (despite even having it ''[[EveryoneCanSeeIt pointed out]]'' to him on several occasions by others, notably Koizumi (which might go some way to explaining his reluctance to acknowledge it, admittedly)). It's slightly different there though since Kyon essentially wants to hate Haruhi for her [[JerkAss behaviour]] towards him and others yet finds himself attracted to her anyway (or so anyone with half a brain can infer despite his [[UnreliableNarrator unreliable narration]]), whereas here he clearly has no problem with Yuki, he's just terminally oblivious (possibly a case of ContractualGenreBlindness; Kyon has always been pretty GenreSavvy, after all, and now that he's the male protagonist in a romantic comedy with an incredibly shy heroine...).
*** There's also the theory that Kyon has retained some degree of his Genre Savvyness and what he's actually doing is waiting for Yuki to up and tell him herself. Several scenes show that he likes Yuki a lot but like Ryoko wishes she were more assertive.
* {{Otaku}}: This ''is'' the artist of ''Haruhi-chan'', after all; it's not as extreme as the other, however. Yuki does at least sneak some video games in bed.
** And often winds up playing them into the morning hours, to Ryoko's displeasure.
* ParentalAbandonment: Ryoko's parents are working overseas, and we never hear anything about Yuki's except when a doctor mentions their absence in passing. Ryoko does almost all the shopping and cooking for Yuki, and probably a fair amount of the cleaning.
* ProductPlacement: Kyon, his sister, and Yuki play Monster Hunter-like game on the Nintendo 3DS. In the anime, this changes to Yuki's love of playing visual novels on her PlayStation Vita.
* RealPlaceBackground: In line with the original series, the anime offers a faithful depiction of the town of Nishinomiya. Many landmarks are even shown in their renovated state, which would imply that [[FridgeLogic the main characters have been attending high school for at least 9 years already]].
* RecycledSoundtrack: The soundtrack from the original show is used quite heavily, especially in scenes with Haruhi, giving a strong sense of reminiscence.
* TheReveal: Haruhi's famous declaration about "time travelers, aliens and psychics", although it's in rather different circumstances to the original.

** Ryoko does this to Haruhi after finding out the latter had Yuki quickly sign a permission slip to allow her and Koizumi to enter their school for club activities despite not being students at the school.

* RunningGag: Yuki heeding Ryoko's advice to get an early night before important days rather than playing video games, only to not be able to sleep for excitement and stay up ''all'' night playing video games by accident. [[spoiler:Alternate Yuki gets into the same routine with books.]]
* SchoolFestival: The focus of much of Volume 6.

** Tsuruya and Ryoko get a bit too involved during the Mikuru vs Yuki contest to see who's more popular. It eventually gets to the point where both Mikuru and Yuki are no longer the contestants, and the other two instead end up competing with each other instead.
** Kyon accidentally making Ryoko into the school rep against Haruhi's school, saying that an insult to their school was an insult on her. She ends up challenging Haruhi to a quiz as a result.
* ShipperOnDeck: Ryoko, who ships Yuki x Kyon. In fact most of the girls do (even Haruhi, who has some degree of affection for Kyon). Tsuruya attempted to ship Mikuru x Kyon for a while, but neither Mikuru nor Kyon [[JustFriends shared the sentiment.]]
* ShipTease: Tons, mostly Kyon/Yuki. However, there are a few hints that Ryoko [[LesYay cares more about Yuki than she lets on]].
** There's also a few moments of Ryoko/Kyon, although it might just be that she's trying to spur Yuki into being more proactive herself.
** Then there is, of course, hints of Haruhi/Kyon, which is made more obvious in the anime, complete with mild tsundereness on Haruhi's part, starting from February 13, when Haruhi realizes that [[spoiler: Kyon is John Smith.]]
** ShipSinking: Kyon and Mikuru however, just aren't that into each other and are JustFriends. This is in ''stark'' contrast to the regular series.
*** She's not molested or exposed nearly as much in this series so his [[ChronicHeroSyndrome knight-errant-compulsive-disorder]] isn't triggered. Instead Yuki shows more obvious distress and so gets more attention.
* ShooOutTheClowns: for the entirety of the 'Disappearance' arc, Mikuru, Tsuruya, Haruhi and Itsuki are nowhere to be seen. Justified in-universe in that both schools are close to major exams, so only the closest of friends are still hanging out with each other to study.
* SkinshipGrope: Mikuru suffers this at the hands of Haruhi and Tsuruya at the hot springs.
* ShrinkingViolet: Yuki is one in this series. She is quite shy and often unwilling to do much on her own without prodding from someone else.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Despite not naming the series after her, Haruhi appears quite frequent throughout the anime. Sometimes up to 60% of the episodes while Yuki taking the backseat. Not so much in the manga.

** At the end of episode 2 of the anime, Yuki forgets about meeting in the park with Haruhi to capture Santa. As she walks by with Kyon, Haruhi then leaps out of the bushes and collapses, suggesting she had been there all night.
** At the end of episode 9, Ryoko tells Yuki to come up with excuses to see Kyon over the summer break since they won't have club meetings. [[spoiler:As Yuki crosses the street, she has an accident involving a car.]]
** The final episode hits us with a BrickJoke several episodes in the making -- [[spoiler:Kyon forgot to do his summer homework.]]
* StaticCharacter: Almost everyone, especially that universes Nagato.
* StatusQuoIsGod: Through out the show and in the SERIES FINALE of all things.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: Tsuruya climbs the hill that made Kyon, Koizumi, and Yuki exhausted and sweating while heading to the stargazing spot near the resort without breaking a sweat. All while carrying Mikuru piggyback the entire time as well.
* TeamMom: Ryoko, by far. Tsuruya teases her with the idea after Ryoko maneuvers Kyon into some alone time with Yuki at the Christmas party, and Haruhi mocks her as a disapproving mother-in-law over Yuki and Kyon's relationship.
* TemptingFate: In episode 9, Koizumi and Kyon are relaxing in their room at the hot springs resort. The latter mentions that having some nice and quiet every now and then is good. Haruhi then immediately shows up, and says they're going to spend the whole night playing games together.
* ThemeTuneCameo: In the very first episode of the anime, Asakura hums ''[[LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya Hare Hare Yukai]]'' while she cooks. In the final episode, Haruhi hums ''Bouken Desho, Desho?''.
* TimeSkip: Third page of the manga skips forwards seven months leaving questions such as how Kyon joined the Lit. Club unanswered until later.
* TookALevelInKindness: Kyon and Haruhi are both noticeably nicer than their original characters, but the grand prize goes to Asakura. Although she acts the same, she is significantly less stabbity.
* {{Tsundere}}: Haruhi is a Type B, although it's played with a little - she doesn't get awkward when it's necessarily someone she's crushing on, just being thanked in general (she had elements of this in the original, although her JerkAss personality placed her more in Type A territory).
* UncannyValleyGirl: Averted in this series, unlike the main ''Haruhi'' series, with Ryoko Asakura. Here she doesn't smile all the time or always have a voice of concern. She seems to have an actual normal range of emotions and they run deeper than skin-deep. From just starting the series, one can tell she's actually pretty decent and normal in this series, and she comes across very differently from how she comes across in the ''Haruhi'' series.
* UnwantedAssistance: After the above FanService happens, Yuki asks Kyon what he thought of what he saw. After worrying about how to answer, he looks over at Ryoko, who holds up a cue card that says, "It was sexy (especially your belly button)."
* UnwantedHarem: While not all of them are into Kyon, once you get to the later chapters it's just a ton of girls congregating in the Literature Club room.
* ValentinesDayEpisodes: Episodes 4 & 5 in the anime, and the respective chapters in the manga.
* VisualPun: The anime's opening has a couple:

* VitriolicBestBuds: Ryoko and Tsuruya at first, and once that friendship mellows out, Ryoko and Haruhi. Kyon and Haruhi also. He's still a bit put off by her antics, but does seem to understand her more than almost anyone else.
