* BunnyEarsLawyer: Julian and Shihoudou are both extremely competent and extremely weird. Kyo warns Sasuke of the latter's {{Badass}}itude when Sasuke gets cocky, and admits even ''he'' can't handle her in a fight. There are times when they cross the line into CrazyAwesome territory.

** Also played straight with Akira, who is COVERED in scars, but they are not obvious seeing as they are usually covered by clothes (most of them are on his back).

** Sasuke starts out with a sword the same size, despite being twelve years old and an appropriate height for his age.
** Shihoudou's sword is also really damn big.
** Hishigi's Hakuya is even more impressive.

* BloodFromTheMouth: Happens a lot. It's occasionally justified when a character is outright stated to have lung damage/internal bleeding, or a cut ''in'' the mouth in less deadly situations.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Julian and Shihoudou are both extremely competent and extremely weird. Even Kyo admits to the latter's {{Badass}}itude. There are times when they cross the line into CrazyAwesome territory.

** LightEmUp: Hishigi's abilities are definitely this. Anthony's Koryuuha technique is either this or just an attack too fast for Hotaru and Shinrei to see before they awaken their subconscious powers.

* EnfanteTerrible: Tokito starts off as one of these. Subverted in that he's at least a few decades older than he looks, but presents as a child (14 according to the fanbook) because his adult body looks more like Muramasa.

** TheEvilGenius: Hishigi, complete with [[MadScientist creepy human experimentation]].

* TheFogOfAges: Chinmei is implied to be at least a couple thousand years old, and can't remember for sure if any of the people he used to love even existed. By the time he shows up in the plot, killing is the only thing that can make him feel ''anything''.

** And they're absolutely rampant in the fandom, though it's almost justified, because SDK has one hell of a UniversalAdaptorCast.

* TheMole: Yukimura.

* AbusiveParents: Shinrei and Hotaru's father. He actually ''[[OffingTheOffspring sent assassins]]'' after Hotaru, his illegitimate son. For the most part, he just had ridiculously high expectations of Shinrei, but he also was seen hitting a very young Shinrei hard enough to knock him over for [[DisproportionateRetribution saying that the "Demon Child" had saved his life and was not evil]].

* MiseryPoker: Tokito throws a fit after their battle, claiming to have had the worst life ever. Several other characters immediately top Tokito's sob story, but Akira "wins" with an entire panel detailing his horrific childhood.

* TheFogOfAges: Chinmei.

* AncientConspiracy: The Mibu Clan.

* ElementalRockPaperScissors: Averted; It's demonstrated over the course of the series that the superiority depends on the wielder, rather than the element they are using. [[PlayingWithFire Hotaru]] initially wins out against [[MakingASplash Shinrei]] despite severe injuries from fighting Kyo, but only because he's using his Hono Chikewai, which gives him a huge boost of power, but causes damage over time. ** It's the standard for people dealing with Hishigi. Even ''[[FearlessFool Kyo]]'' gets an OhCrap moment when Hishigi pulls off a FlashStep from a good hundred yards away, and suddenly he is right in front of Kyo and [[TakenForGranite Kyo's legs are petrified]]. Sasuke has a simultaneous and more expressive one. They both would have been dead if Kyoshiro hadn't stepped in.

* SamusIsAGirl: [[spoiler:Tokito, who stops Bontenmaru's fists with three fingers and actually ''punches through him, '' despite the fact that one of his biceps is bigger around than her waist, not to mention that she completely pwns the crap out of Akira for most of their fight.]]

* MutualDisadvantage: Yuan claims that he and Hishigi are "still even", and that's why the only casualty of their battle so far has been [[SceneryGorn the terrain around them]] and a self-inflicted cut on Hishigi's face. Hishigi calls his bluff, being fully aware that Yuan is running out of stamina. Hishigi is also [[IAmNotLeftHanded not using all of his available power]], but Yuan doesn't know that.
