** The theme of the Goyosei is that they embody five elements: Shinrei is water, Keikoku (Hotaru) is fire, Chinmei is earth, Saishi is Wood, and Taihaku is gold. Taihaku is the only one who does not have powers related to his element.

* ElementalRockPaperScissors: Averted; It's demonstrated over the course of the series that the superiority depends on the wielder, rather than the element they are using. Hotaru initially wins out against Shinrei despite severe injuries from fighting Kyo, but only because he's using his Hono Chikewai, which gives him a huge boost of power, but causes damage over time. Shinrei ultimately comes out on top because Hotaru's boost wears off. And of course, both of them get mercilessly curbstomped by Fubuki.

* ElementalPowers: Subverted. Hotaru, the fire user, is calm, while the ice user, Akira, appears calm on the surface, but push a few buttons and he loses his head. Not to mention that Shinrei, the water guy, loses his cool even more easily.

** MakingASplash: Shinrei and Fubuki
** DishingOutDirt: Chinmei combines this with GravityMaster.
** PlayingWithFire: Hotaru and Yuan
** RazorWind: Kyo's own Mumyo Jinpu Ryuu style utilizes this.
** LightEmUp: Hishigi's abilities are definitely this. Anthony's Koryuuha technique is either this or just an attack too fast for Hotaru and Shinrei to see before they awaken their subconscious powers.
** AnIcePerson: Akira
** ShockAndAwe: Sasuke

** Shindara is shown to be capable of using several elements, but at a lower power output than specialists.

Added DiffLines:

* PersonalityPowers: Subverted. Hotaru, who uses fire, nearly always remains calm and relaxed while fighting. Yuan plays the intense personality of the fire stereotype straighter, but he's still a nice, friendly guy overall. The ice specialist, Akira, presents a collected front and tries to stay that way, but he's easily frustrated when certain buttons are pushed. And water-user Shinrei loses his cool at the drop of a hat.

* ImagineSpot: When Yuan is asked how he'd describe Hishigi, he says he's sort of like a mad doctor. This results in several characters trying to figure out what that means, imagining him DressedToHeal and also as a typically deranged MadScientist, among other things.
* ImAHumanitarian: The real HairaAll of the true Berserkers, but Haira especially can't shut up about it.

** It's the standard for people dealing with Hishigi. Even Kyo gets an OhCrap moment when Hishigi pulls off a FlashStep from a good hundred yards away, and suddenly he is right in front of Kyo and Kyo's legs are petrified. Sasuke has a simultaneous and more expressive one. They both would have been dead if Kyoshiro hadn't stepped in.
