Following a map the man gives her, Nanami finds a rundown shrine instead of a house. Upon hearing ghostly voices, she quickly decides the shrine is haunted and tries to run, but is cornered by a pair of friendly shrine spirits and [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Tomoe]], a bad-tempered {{Kitsune}} familiar. She discovers that Tomoe had been expecting his master, Mikage, who left twenty years ago for a trip into town and never returned. Tomoe is less than pleased to find that far from returning himself, Mikage has bestowed the kamisama kiss, or god kiss, on Nanami and gifted her the shrine, making her the local land god in his stead, and by extension, Tomoe's new mistress. ** Even for a fox, his powers appear to be unusually formidable. He's said to be able to control a sea of fire and is nigh invulnerable to injury. Ikusagami had to borrow a special sword in order to face him in the past.

* MonsterRoommate: Nanami is an ordinary human teenager who ends moving in with a {{Kitsune}} and a pair of shrine spirits.

** ShapeshiftingSeducer: Tomoe is more than capable of doing this and has actually done it once that we know of. Remember, the guy is a {{Kitsune}}.

** Mamoru, Nanami's [[EverythingsBetterWithMonkeys monkey shikigami]], can become a cute little boy at will.

''Kamisama Kiss'' (''Kamisama Hajimemashita'') is a {{Shoujo}} manga series created by Julietta Suzuki. It begins when teenage Nanami Momozono's [[ParentalAbandonment father skips town]] [[TheGamblingAddict to escape his gambling debts]] and leaves her to face his angry creditors. Nanami is evicted from her home and ends up on a nearby park bench with no money and no family to turn to. She saves a strange man (Mikage) from a dog, and after hearing her story, the man offers Nanami his house as a thank you for saving him. Since she has nowhere else to go, she decides to check it out.

* NotSoDifferent: Despite their different personalities and backgrounds Tomoe and Nanami share more than a few similarities. They both have lost a loved one that they deeply cared about; both were abandoned by someone they trusted; both have pretty bad tempers; both speak their mind no matter what the situation calls for; and finally, both have a rebellious streak in them and don't behave like society expects them to.
** Also both Tomoe and Nanami are looked down upon for their rank. Nanami is looked down upon for being a mere human trying to live up to land god status, and Tomoe is (somewhat more understandably) looked down upon for his jaded past as a wild-fox-yokai-turned-divine-familiar.
** Nanami directly invokes this after Narukami takes over the shrine, saying that she and Tomoe are like family because they have been thrown from the same house.
** Tomoe and Mizuki aren't as different as they would like to believe. Mizuki was waiting for a god that would never come back, like Tomoe. Nanami is Mizuki's Second God, just like Tomoe. Like Tomoe, Mizuki has romantic feelings for Nanami. Mizuki also fears Nanami disappearing and being lonely again, similar to Tomoe's fear.

Creator/TMSEntertainment produced an anime adaption with Akitaro Daichi, of ''Manga/FruitsBasket'' fame, as the director. Junko Yamanaka, the art director from ''Manga/DetectiveConan,'' handled the character designs and it featured the voice talents of Shinnosuke Tachibana, Creator/NobuhikoOkamoto and Suzuko Mimori. The first episode aired on October 1, 2012. A two episode OVA was released on August 20, 2013. Funimation began streaming the English dub on December 30, 2013. * BalefulPolymorph: One of Tomoe's favorite attacks is to transform an opponent into a game animal of some kind and than use his fox-fire to cook it alive. [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments One especially memorable scene]] has him turning Kurama into an ostrich. The next thing we see is one of Nanami's classmates informing her that there is an ostrich being chased by a fireball down the hall.

* BeleagueredAssistant: Tomoe is like this whenever Nanami's plans go wrong. Which is always.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Almost perfect description of Tomoe and Nanami's relationship.
* BerserkButton: Threatening or hurting Nanami is this to Tomoe, and later, Mizuki.

* MonsterSobStory: Despite being a brutal, sadistic and ruthless bastard it's hard not to feel at least some empathy for Akura-Ou with some of the things he gets put through.

* PettingZooPeople: Himemiko's true form is more fish than human. We see a few others throughout the series.

* TimeTravelRomance: [[spoiler: Played with. Nanami travels back in time to save Tomoe from a curse and ends up causing Past-Tomoe to fall for Yukiji, ultimately [[StableTimeLoop leading to the very curse she was trying to prevent]].]]

* DemotedToExtra: While never truly important, Ami and Kei become almost non-existient as the series goes. And Kei is completely absent from the second season of the anime.

* AngerBornOfWorry: Tomoe does this constantly.

* BerserkButton: Nanami is this to Tomoe, and later, Mizuki.

* CannotTalkToWomen: Suirou. Nanami eventually has enough and calls him on this.

* ComedicSociopathy: Let's see, we have Tomoe's use of BalefulPolymorph and about half of Akura-Ou's actions.

* HumansThroughAlienEyes: It is usually played for laughs but Tomoe honestly doesn't seem to understand human emotions a lot of times. In fact, Kurama flat out tells him this and more specifically that "He doesn't get girls Nanami's age." Mizuki is pretty much in the same boat.

* [[spoiler: IdenticalGrandson: From the start we saw that Nanami looked a lot like Yukiji. Eventually we learn the reason for that resemblance is because Nanami is Yukiji's direct descendant.]]

* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Tomoe frequently thrills the in-world female population and real-world fangirls with his collection of elaborate kimonos and fans. Nanami also occasionally breaks out her traditional Japanese clothing for festivals and special events, and Kurama is always punk-rocker chic.

* InterspeciesRomance: Tomoe and Nanami and various others.

* JerkAss: Tomoe immediately springs to mind.

* KidWithTheLeash: Tomoe is a powerful and ruthless demon, but thanks to the familiar contract if Nanami gives him an order he must obey it. He chafes at this restriction regularly.

* LazyBum: Mizuki, according to Tomoe. This is somewhat hypocritical as Tomoe is not exactly adverse to taking it easy himself; the first episode had him abandon the shrine and head to the Red Light District rather than deal with Nanami.

* LemonyNarrator: The anime has one.

* LittleBitBeastly: Tomoe, Kurama, a few others.

* TheLoinsSleepTonight: While Nanami is off to the god summit with Mizuki, Tomoe seizes the opportunity to visit the yokai version of a Red Light District. Despite his popularity with the Tanuki-girls, once there he finds his heart isn't in it and simply drinks until he falls asleep.
* LoveAtFirstSight: [[spoiler: Tomoe tells Yukiji, actually Nanami disguised as Yukiji, that he fell in love with her the moment he first laid eyes on her back when Akura-Ou razed her village. It's subverted though since he's confusing Nanami with Yukiji, it was Nanami possessing Yukiji's body when she and Tomoe first met and Yukiji hates yokai with a passion and was very much in love with her lord husband.]]

Mizuki refuses to acknowledge anyone but Nanami as the land god, but begs Mikage to save Tomoe's life despite the fact that the two normally fight like cats and dogs.]]
