* FangsAreEvil: Choza, who also has MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily. [[spoiler: He later [[HeelFaceTurn subverts this.]]

* BlindingBangs: Choza, though ironically (for the "BlindBangs means they are an idiot" stereotype) he is one of the smarter members of the cast and often paired up with [[TheDitz Uzume]]. [[spoiler: He does this to hide [[MarkOfShame the tattoos that show he is the child of a criminal]], which are around his eyes.]]

* YouveGottaHaveBlueHair: Many characters have unusual hair colors like pink, green, or blue which turns out to be a plot point since one of the nine treasures can only be worn by someone with a certain hair color.

* [[RoyalsWhoDoSomething Iwahi Yashima]], the vain ruler of Yome Mura who became smitten with Utsuho and is the owner of the “Cherry Blossom Rouge” of the nine treasures.

* TheInfiltration: Ustuho and Dr. Yakuma do this to the medicine man.

* YouveGottaHaveBlueHair: Many characters have unusual hair colors like pink, green, or blue which turns out to be a plot point since one of the nine treasures can only be worn by someone with a certain hair color.

Of note, the manga may be one of the few translated officially into English that lacks a scanlation project. So no illegal reading for you!

* DisguisedInDrag: The man who sneaks into Neya's hideout on Nadeshiko Island by pretending to be an injured woman. Bonus points for also wearing a flesh mask to disguise the pincer tattoos marking him as a murderer.

* MagicRealism: The series is rather realistic (no superpowers) but includes tanuki who can talk and [[VoluntaryShapeshifting shapeshift]].
* MarkOfShame: Murderers get pincers tattooed on the side of their mouthes.

* TrueCompanions: Utsuho and Pochi, who both have no remaining living family. Utsuho would risk his life for Pochi, and Pochi is willing to follow Utsuho even into a situation in which he knows he could die.

* HumansAreBastards: The humans who [[spoiler: lied to the tanuki and told them that they could be friends, only to gather them into one place and kill them for food]].

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Utsuho is equal parts this and HeroicSociopath. While he really loves lying, he uses his skills to help others in a way that goes above and beyond what he would do if he was [[ForTheEvulz only doing it for fun.]]

* '''ILied''': Most villains [[HeroicSociopath and Utsuho]] seem to like doing this. One that stands out as particularly cruel is the [[EvilPoacher hunter]] [[MoralEventHorizon gleefully showing Pochi his mother’s corpse- flayed and stuffed- after promising to return her safely.]]

[[BlatantLies Itsuwaribito is a]] [[{{Shoujo}} Shoujou manga]] by NaokoTakeuchi, [[BlatantLies chronicling the adventures of a]] MagicalGirl [[BlatantLies as she travels through]] [[TastesLikeDiabetes the Land of Sugar Plums.]]

** Though Utsuho points out that [[spoiler: the serial killer’s]] parents could have pushed him into the well to save him from [[spoiler: the wolf that eats them]]. Utsuho says that this story might as well be the true one since it would make [[spoiler: the serial killer]] happier.

* ExactlyWhatIAimedAt: Utsuho says that he can defeat a cannon with a [[ILied poisoned rock]]. He throws the rock, but the cannon user dodges - [[XanatosGambit only to allow the rock to set off a trap which takes out the cannon user.]]

* GambitPileup: Some Itsuwaribito on Nadeshiko Island try and pull a XanatosGambit on Utsuho by making him defend against several measures that only lead him getting surrounded. But it turns out that [[spoiler: Utsuho had been trying to get them all in one place so he could pretend to poison them and scatter them]].

* HeroicSociopath: Utsuho is equal parts this and JerkWithAHeartOfGold. He gleefully messes with people’s minds, tricks them, threatens them, poisons them, blows them up or beats them up, all because he [[ItAmusedMe thinks it’s fun.]]

* ThirtyGambitPileup: Some Itsuwaribito on Nadeshiko Island try and pull a XanatosGambit on Utsuho by making him defend against several measures that only lead him getting surrounded. But it turns out that [[spoiler: Utsuho had been trying to get them all in one place so he could pretend to poison them and scatter them]].

Itsuwaribito is ''actually'' a {{Shounen}} manga by Yuuki Iinuma, chronicling the adventures of [[BlatantLies sweet young man]] named Utsuho who sets out to seek his destiny... Okay, ILied again.

* FakingTheDead: [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]: [[spoiler: The tanuki shapeshifts into the form of a dead person, leading people to believe that his potion can really bring the dead back to life]].

* DeathEqualsRedemption: After suffering a massive chest wound, [[spoiler: the tanuki]] redeems himself by setting off an explosion to contain a forest fire that would have doomed an entire island. He is clearly touched by [[TrueCompanions Pochi wanting to go with Utsuho to set off the explosion, despite it being a suicide mission]], and decides that he should save the island instead of them.

** An omake strip features [[SchmuckBait Utsuho promising Dr. Yakuma ten ryo if he can do what Utsuho wrote on a card.]] If Utsuho wins, he gets all-he-can-eat dingo. What is written on the paper? "Don't read this sentence.''

Along the way he gathers new companions: [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter The Talking Tanuki, Pochi]], who sees Utsuho as his [[TrueCompanions family]], CombatMedic Dr. Yakuma, who is traveling Japan in pursuit of remedies and who hopes to heal an unnamed person, and TheChick Neya, a former convict who left her [[PenalColony place of exile]] in order to build a safe haven for her friends.

* BrokenAesop: Deliberately PlayedForLaughs. Dr. Yakuma tries to prove to Utsuho that hard, honest work is good by building a boat by hand. When Utsuho beats up the nobles who try to wreck the boat and even comes up with a handmade sail, Dr. Yakuma thinks that he's learned his lesson. When it starts coming apart, Utsuho complains that the nobles did a terrible job sewing it, and [[RefugeInAudacity reveals some stolen food.]]

* OrphanageOfLove: The orphan village Utsuho grows up in

* PenalColony: Nadeshiko Island, though nicer than most, is virtually impossible to escape from (without a large boat) due to sea currents and is the site of fighting between Itsuwaribito factions. One of which has a boss who wants to KillAllHumans.

Itsuwaribito is a {{Shounen}} manga by Yuuki Iinuma. Itsuwaribito are the ultimate criminals: a combination of [[TheCaper stealthy thieves]], [[TheCon con artists]] and [[AxCrazy violent thugs]]. ConsummateLiar Utsuho wants to be an Itsuwaribito- with a twist: he intends to use his lies for good and save a thousand people to carry on the dream of the old man who saved him.

Along the way he gathers new companions, including [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter the Talking Tanuki, Pochi,]] CombatMedic Dr. Yakuma and TheChick Neya.

* CombatMedic: Dr.Yakuma, who is a skilled surgeon and also strong enough to send a man flying. Occasionally his medical skills help him out: When facing a {{Mook}} who is absurdly proud of his muscles, Yakuma casually knocks him out with a single blow to the head (where he cannot build up his muscles).

** Dr. Yakuma's medicine box can be used to stop said serial killer's needles.

Along the way he gathers new companions, including [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter the Talking Tanuki, Pochi,]] CombatMedic Dr. Yakuma and ActionGirl Neya.

* ActionGirl: Neya

** An omake strip features [[SchmuckBait Utsuho promising Dr. Yakuma ten ryo if he can do what Utsuho wrote on a card.]] If Utsuho wins, he gets all-he-can-eat ramen. What is written on the paper? "Don't read this sentence.''

Along the way he meets many new companions, including [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter the Talking Tanuki, Pochi,]] and CombatMedic Dr. Yakuma.

* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: When Utsuho, Dr. Yakuma and Neya end up taking a job (without knowing what they were getting into) as bodyguards to a swindler who hires them to protect him from his victims. They manage to give the villagers back what the swindler stole, despite being promised a generous sum of money, through LoopholeAbuse.

* XanatosGambit: Most of Utsuho's tricks involve [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption making it impossible for his opponent to make a right move.]] If he says that he has poisoned them, they can either ignore him and possibly die or believe him and play right into his hands.

* XanatosGambit: Utsuho can turn most situations to his liking through liberal use of poison, bombs, and lies. If his opponent cannot see through the lies, [[ConsummateLiar which is really hard]] or trick him in turn, they have no "right" moves and anything they do easily gets turned against them by Utsuho. For example, if he lies and says that they are poisoned, his opponent cannot simply discount him as lying (because they could die), but acting on the assumption that it is poison (freaking out or accepting the "antidote") inevitably leads to their defeat.
