** Chapter 65: [[spoiler: To save Naruto from a massive rasengan, Kawaki reveals to have obtained a new karma, and absorbs the jutsu, while also progressing to a more advanced stage of karma than before, to the point that his left eye also mutates into a never-seen-before doujutsu]].
** Chapter 80: [[Sarada awakening her Mangekyo Sharingan.]]

* YourDaysAreNumbered: Kawaki and Boruto both risk to die one day. While they may not die physically, their minds will be destroyed and replaced by their Otsutsuki host.[[spoiler:Boruto is dangerously close as 80% of his DNA was already converted, while Kawaki has seemingly escaped this fate after he lost his karma, but considering that he has one in the future]].

* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: The current kages: Naruto, Gaara, Darui, Chōjūrō and Kurotsuchi. Best seen when they all battle the Otsutsuki duo made up of Kinshiki and Momoshiki.

* NothingIsTheSameAnymore: Chapter 55 reveals that [[spoiler:because of his usage of [[PowerAtAPrice Baryon Mode]], Naruto has permanently lost Kurama. * RedEyesTakeWarning: If Sarada activates her Sharingan, changes are that the battle is over before it even begins.

* RivalFinalBoss: Going by what happens in the first scene of the anime, [[spoiler: Kawaki is meant to turn from being Boruto's friend to his rival, EvilCounterpart and FinalBoss]].

* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: Sumire falls for Boruto because he saved her from a path of self-destruction.

* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The way karma/Kāma can be spelled or translated is a bit tricky. ''Kāma'' is its own concept in the Hindu literature, different from ''karma'', and has the meaning of "longing" or "desire". In Japanese, ''Kāma'' can be written as ''karma'', making no distinction between the words. The latter is used as the official translation in Western media.
** Is "Boruto" or "Bolt/Volt"? "Sarada", the Hindu goddess or "Salad"?

** Pheraps the most blatant example of this, happens during the Funato arc, where Funamushi takes Kagura hostage, and forces Boruto and his friends to surrender, unless they wanted Kagura to die, and none of them tries anything to save Kagura despite having the means to. This leads to Kagura being ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice anyway, and in a fit of rage, Boruto activates his karma for the first time since the fight against Isshiki, and hits Funamushi with a rasengan, and still, the guy is able to slip away without much damage. Needless to say, none of this would have happened if at least Sarada remembered that she can cast genjutsu with her Sharingan.

* SuperpowerfulGenetics: The most important plot device. [[Manga/{{Naruto}} See a pattern already?]] Victor conducts inhumane experiments on his own employees to obtain the power of Hashirama's Cell. Mitsuki was created by Orochimaru to be perfect genetically and going as far as putting a curse mark on Mitsuki's heart to keep the secrets of his creation safe if anyone ever tried to investigate his body too deeply. Sarada and Boruto are both victims of villains who want them for their powers and dojutsus.

* AllGenesAreCodominant: Happens so often with the present generation that it raises the question of why clans didn't intermarry earlier given that the children resulting from such marriages inherit the chakra nature and techniques from both parents, and often with the potential of becoming stronger then previous generations.

* Ino is quite active herself. While she doesn't fights as much as n her youth, she occupies the position of Leader of the Konoha Barrier Team, which means that keeping of Konoha safe from any external attack is her responsibility. [[spoiler:After the time skip, she is Shikamaru's right hand more or less, helping him with keeping Konoha safe in Naruto's abcense.]]

* AllGenesAreCodominant: Happens so often with the present generation that one makes you wonder why clans didn't intermarried earlier given that the children resulted from such marriages inherit the chakra nature and techniques from both parents, and often with the potential of becoming stronger then previous generations.

** ''Boruto'' part One ends like this. [[spoiler:Everyone's memories are heavily altered as a result of Eida's Omnipotence technique, switching Boruto from being Naruto's biological son to Kawaki in their minds. Boruto becomes a missing nin about whom everybody believes killed Naruto, Sarada and Sumire are the only one unaffected by the Omnipotence, Sarada awakens her Mangekyo Sharingan, and Sasuke departs from Konoha with Boruto, at the cost of not seeing his family again for other several years.]]

** Kishimoto initially planned to give Sarada long hair, but he felt it wouldn't work too well with her action-oriented persona, so he changed for the long-shouldered hair she has in present. Which is a bit ironic, because Sarada is depicted anyway as a ProperLady even with her tomboyish streak. After the time skip, she sports an even shorter

** Between ''Boruto'' and ''Boruto:Blue Vortex'' passed another three years.

* TimeSkip: Several years pass between the OVA where Naruto becomes Hokage, and the start of the anime, where the young generation is 11-years-old.

* AllGenesAreCodominant: Happens with most of the present generation:

** Sarada Uchiha unlocked her Sharingan and Sakura's monstrous strength for the first time on the same day.

* AnimationBump: To be expected anytime Kanna Itou is involved. Take example Sarada vs Benga. The animation is very fluid and detailed, Sarada is drawn with unique and sharper facial features, has a rich BodyLanguage while she speaks (something that is very hard to achieve on a weekly anime), and her dress flips as she moves.

** Even Sumire with her soft voice and meek demeanor proved she can be on par with Mitsuki (at least briefly).

** [[TheHero Naruto]], the Seventh Hokage married [[YamatoNadeshiko Hinata]], the Hyuga's former heiress, and have two prodigious children; [[KidHero Boruto and Himawari]].

* BewareTheNiceOnes: Because the new generation lives in an even more peaceful era, the children are more approachable and emotionally echilibrated then their predecesors. This being said, their parents, whom many of them happen to be powerhouses, also spent more time with their children, leading them to learn dangerous jutsus from a younger age. Boruto and his peers may be more relaxed and happy-go-lucky, but they will retaliate hard, and possible with a murder or two.

* BigGood: Both Naruto and Sasuke are renowned as {{Worlds Strongest M|an}}en, and they are the main defense against Kara and Otsutsuki. Sasuke travels to different dimensions to hunt down intel on the Otsutsuki, while Naruto is more or less leading the battle against them whenever they show up. They overall maintain this status even after losing a great deal of their powers.

* BloodyMurder: Duringa bodygurading mission, Kawaki and Team 10 face a villain, Jujumaru, who's specialty are blood jutsu. He can create webs made of blood, control a person once they are hit by his blood and set up a barrage of deadly needles.

** Kishimoto initially planned to give Sarada long hair, but he felt it wouldn't work too well with her action-oriented persona, so he changed for the long-shouldered hair she has in present. Which is a bit ironic, because Sarada is depicted anyway as a ProperLady even with her tomboyish streak.

* BreakingOldTrends: Kishimoto once said that we wont see firearms or certain advanced technologies. By the time of ''Boruto'', the technology matches our 21 century, and [[spoiler:Ao]] uses machine guns to try to kill Team 7.

* CherryBlossoms: Cherry blossoms motifs appear sometimes when the plot concentrates on Sarada. For example, when Sarada trains to use Chidori, the watterfall she hits forms a cherry blossom flower around her Chidori.

* ContrastingSequelMainCharacter: Keeping true to its SpiritualAntithesis nature, the main characters mirrors the old generation in different aspects. We have another team 7, composed of Boruto, Sarada, Mitsuki and Kawaki as SixthRanger. Each one of them finds their own foils on Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura and Sai.

* DecadeDissonance: The last Shinobi War left in ruins many nations, but between the 15 years old gap between ''Naruto'' and ''Boruto'', the Five Great Nations have recovered and are even more prosperous than before, with the Land of Fire being overall the most developed technologically and economically. For some reason, the Land of Iron developing technology has stagnated after the war, because Tsubaki has never seen computer-like technology before coming in Konoha, though it does fairly well on the economical sector.

The anime adaptation began broadcasting in April 2017 as a direct sequel to ''Naruto Shippuuden'', with Kishimoto promising that he would "make it better than ''Naruto''." The anime follows the same story overall, though it starts with new original story arcs that take place before the start of the manga to give some time for the manga to advance forward. It also runs canonical original arcs which serve to expand the world, provide buildup and foreshadowing for major plot points, and enhance the manga arcs when they come around.

* ButtMonkey: Not a person as much as a place this time. Remember how Konoha was attacked and almost destroyed several times in ''Naruto''? Once by Kyuubi, once by Orochimaru and completely destroyed by Pain's attack, even some filler villains were close to nuke Konoha. Come ''Boruto'', which continues the trend. Sumire Kaikei was dangerously close to doing it, then Momoshiki and Kinshiki came, and wrecked a stadium, then Isshiki came to mess things up a little as well, until Boruto forcefully dragged him away. Not to mention the first scene of ''Boruto'' which shows Konoha [[spoiler: being in complete ruins]], again.

** Team 7: [[ThreeAmigos Sarada, Boruto and Mitsuki]] until they are joined by Kawaki and turns the team in a FourPhilosophyEnsemble.

** To break down the way three man teams are created, the anime does better at averting the usual TwoGuysAndAGirl rule. Only the 3 most notable squads, Team 7, Team 10 and Team Shinki follow the standard of ThreeAmigos standard. Team 5 is made up only of boys, but they have a counterpart in Team 15, which is an AmazonBrigade; and both receive equal attention in the anime. There is also another squad which is made up of TwoGirlsAndAGuy.

** In the Time-travel arc, Boruto and Sasuke get respective outfits that are very similar to the ones of [[Film/BackToTheFuture Marty McFly and Doc Brown]].

After the release of Chapter 80, ''Boruto'' went on a brief hiatus. It was later announced that it would return as ''Boruto Two Blue Vortex'', bringing ''Boruto'' into Part 2, much like ''Naruto''. ''Blue Vortex'' begins after a in-universe time skip of three years, just like the time skip in the original ''Naruto'' series, and features Boruto reappearing after having been on the run from both Code and Konoha for much of the interim, while Sarada must deal with the conflicts that result from her being one of the few people on the planet who knows Boruto is not a criminal.

After the release of Chapter 80, ''Boruto'' went on a brief hiatus. It was later announced that it would return as ''Boruto Two Blue Vortex'', bringing ''Boruto'' into Part 2, much like ''Naruto''.

The manga series began in Spring 2016 and is published monthly. The manga begins right after the end of ''Manga/NarutoGaiden'', starting with an adaptation of ''Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie'' before moving on to new content. There's also a novel series published by Jump J-Books, which details further adventures in Boruto's life and a {{Parody}} SuperDeformed series, ''Saikyou Dash Generations''.

Creator/{{Toonami}} announced that they would begin airing ''Boruto'' come September 29th, 2018, notably while its predecessor, ''Naruto Shippuden'', was still airing on the block. It ended its tenure there on October 29th 2019, with Toonami saying it would likely return some time in the future, while Viz continues to produce and release dubbed episodes on home media.

* ThirteenIsUnlucky: When Kawaki tells Boruto how his got his kama, he remembers how the 13 first subjects died in horrible ways from being branded with the seal.
* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: Curtain Village has a massive underground tunnel network, which serves as a secret base to the village's children and is used for their own society.
* AbusiveParents: Even in this era of peace, where good parents are the norm, there is here and there an example which will stand out.

* AcademyOfAdventure: Konoha's Ninja Academy is filled with a lot of weird happenings, from the first story arc. Boruto and his friends have to deal with strange kidnappings, strange new powers, evil possessions, a monster from another dimension, one of his own teammates being the mastermind behind everything.

*** Boruto is popular, talented at many things, making some characters to believe he will surpass Naruto and become Hokage.

*** Mitsuki was created by Orochimaru to be perfect genetically and has powerful abilities.
*** Subverted when it turns out all three also have various major flaws or deficiencies that can impede their performance as ninja, though thankfully their teammates can compensate for each other.
** Shinki is easily the top genin at the Chunin Exams in terms of power, beating Sarada and Boruto in the same time — [[ArrogantKungFuGuy and he knows it]].

* ActingUnnatural: In Academy, Sarada feared getting caught behaving like "Boruto". Once, Shizune catched her trying to climb a building and Sarada started acting in an overly formal manner even for her. She asks Sarada what's wrong but all she is left with is a raised eyebrow.
* ActionGirl: Unlike previous ladies who were rather assisting and rarely had a moment of shining in battle by comparison with their male counterparts, this generation has female characters on par with their mates from the start, from many moments of awesomeness to having a diverse range of jutsus. Characters like [[BadassBookworm Sarada]], [[TheBigGuy Chōchō]] and [[LadyOfWar Sumire]] have their own battles even before graduating the Ninja Academy. Much like in the original series this is more evident in the expanded material in the anime rather than the manga (in the latter Sarada is the only heroic female character with any notable fights so far).

** Even though being an ambassador for Suna is less exciting, Temari can kick ass as much as always, especially if Shikadai is in the harm's way. She can put up quite the fight against Urashiki's puppets.

** [[Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie Momoshiki]] takes quite a turn in the manga's designs of his transformed state. He is much more humanoid here, with added long hair and a more {{Bishounen}} appearance. His skin is also black and white instead of red. His appearences after his death, where he resumes his origibal form, also have him look more {{Bishounen}} due to him keeping his hair down while downplaining a bit his alien origins with his horns being broken.

* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: Despite the anime doing a great job when it comes to adapting its source material, there are certain istances where it outright fails:

** More egregiously, in the anime, when Momoshiki posses Boruto once again, and prepares to capture Kawaki, Naruto tries to persuade him not to by stating that with Isshiki gone he has no one to use as a sacrifice. The issue comes with the knowledge that this detail of an Otsutsuki being needed as sacrifice for a god tree to blossom is something that Naruto shouldn't know, because it was first brought up by Amado in his conversation with Shikamaru, katasuke, Kawaki and Sumire in the manga, after the Hokage left to fight Isshiki. And much like the example above, the anime adapts this part of the manga pretty faithfully.
** When the anime readapted the conversation between Isshiki and Code, it left out Code asking his master the names of his killers as he planned to avenge him too. This casued a plot hole when Code tells Kawaki that he knew how things boiled down, just like in the manga.
** Another big one, when Naruto and Shikamaru intervene in the fight between Code, Kawaki, and a Momoshiki possessed Boruto and the advisor of the Hokage blocked Momoshiki with his shadow possession jutsu, the anime decided for some reason that the Otsutsuki couldn't absorb the jutsu, despite it being perfectly possible with the karma, and happening at various points in the story, and in the very same scene in the manga.

** Sumire wears a SailorFuku with high heels in the manga; in the anime her SailorFuku is a rare ninja-stylized version with pants instead of a skirt.
** Chocho wears overall same outfit in both media, but in the anime her dress is longer and she wears ModestyShorts under it.

** Code's design was first shown coloured in the anime, rather than the manga, this caused a couple of differences in the color palette. Notably: his earrings are purple in the anime, grey in the manga; he has auburn eyes in the anime, but green in the manga; his cranio-facial prosthetic belt is light grey, almost white in the anime, but is black in the manga; he also has a visible scar beneath it in the manga, but not in the anime. Averted from episode 287 onwards, where his color scheme is changed to fully match his manga appearence.

* AdaptedOut: In manga, it's implied that the there is a connection between the karma and the Byakugou Seal. Both Sakura and Mitsuki theorise that the seal has a long and mysterious history, tracing its existence from the Age of the Sage of the Six Paths. The anime removes the scene with Mitsuki talking about the Byakugou Seal, and erases Sakura from the scene where she and Sarada buy flowers from Ino for Sasuke's return. In the anime, only Sarada visits Ino, therefore the conversation between her and her mother about the seal doesn't exists at all. The manga doesn't makes anymore references further to the possible link.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Many recurring characters receive episodes that focus on them, usually to [[CharacterDevelopment develop them]], and some characters can receive even an entire arc dedicated to them, like Sarada, Mitsuki and Chōchō.
* AerithAndBob: On a show where everyone is wearing Japanese names, to have a character wearing a western name like "Victor" is kind of odd.

** "Deepa" and "Sarada" are names of Hindi origins. But than again, in the case of the latter, she is not the first Otsutsuki descendant to wear a Hindi name.

* AgeInappropriateDress: Sarada, Chocho and Sumire -- who are all in the range of 12-13 years old -- are all dressed up normally in the anime, but in the manga they all wear short tight-fitting dresses coupled with high heels. Sarada's redesign was particularly controversial since it also came with [[NavelDeepNeckline cleavage that went down to her waist]].

* AllGenesAreCodominant: Happens with most of present generation:
** Inojin, has can use both the Yamanaka clan's jutsus, and Sai's Ink Techniques.
** Shikadai can use his mother's wind techniques and also mastered most the Shadow Techniques learned from his father.
** Chocho usually uses only the Akimichi Techiques in a fight, but she inherited the lightning chakra nature of her mother.
** The Uzumaki siblings inherited their baddassery from all directions: Himawari got the Byakugan, while Boruto the Gentle First from the Hyuga clan. From the Uzumaki side, they both got Minato's genius, and the chakra poll. Boruto also got the wind nature and ability to use Rasengan like his father.
** Sarada Uchiha unlocked her Sharingan and Sakura's monstruous strength for the first time in the same day.

* AlwaysChaoticEvil: The Otsutsukis are devoid of any sympathetic trait, in the anime Kaguya describing them as having no comprehension of love and only understanding power. They are a species of completely sociopathic aliens which only seeks to destroy other worlds. The only exception shown was Kaguya in ''Anime/NarutoShippuden'', before going mad from the Divine Fruit (and even then her emotional complexity and capacity for empathy was decidedly limited) and Toneri in ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie'' who pulled a HeelFaceTurn (and it took a beatdown from Naruto and his eyes getting ripped out by Hinata to stop him from destroying the Earth and forcibly marrying Hinata) and tries to help out Boruto from afar.
* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: All parents qualify to different degree in the New Era; Hiashi surprisingly, is one of these now, as a grandparent for Boruto and Himawari, but somehow, Sasuke of all people takes the cake. For all his coolness and badassery, his tries to connect with Sarada are more than hilarious.

* AmazonBrigade: Team 15, formed by Sumire, Wasabi and Namida, with Hanabi as their Jonin-sensei. Maintained even after Sumire's transfer to the Scientific Ninja Tool division with Tsubaki, her Samurai replacement.

*** Opening 9 has a scene where Boruto runs away from the sunlight and his friends into a dark alley, with Kawai doing the opposite.

* WhamEpisode: Chapter 79 upends Boruto's entire life in the most brutal of ways. [[spoiler:Kawaki persuades Eida to use her Omnipotence jutsu on the entire planet, rewriting everybody else's (With the possible exception of Sumire and Sarada) memory to believe that Boruto is Naruto's adopted child and Kawaki is Naruto's real son. This means everyone thinks Boruto killed Naruto, meaning that he will be hunted down and killed for this]].

The series was written by Ukyō Kodachi and illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto. Kodachi was the author of ''LightNovel/GaaraHidenASandstormMirage'' and co-author of ''Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie''. Ikemoto was an assistant to ''Naruto'' creator Creator/MasashiKishimoto for the past 15 years. Kishimoto had a supervising role over the Boruto manga and he authored a one-shot manga that preceded the series, ''The Road Illuminated By The Full Moon'' that was adapted in episode 39 of the anime. From November 2020 onward, Kishimoto replaced Ukyo Kodachi as the writer.

** In Episode 13, Kakashi is shown using his "Purple Lightning" technique he developed in ''LightNovel/KakashiHidenLightningInTheIcySky''.
** In Episode 18, Naruto uses his lifetime free ramen coupon he received as a wedding gift in ''LightNovel/KonohaHidenThePerfectDayForAWedding''.

** When the anime readapted the conversation between Isshiki and Code, it left out COde asking his master the names of his killers as he planned to avenge him too. This casued a plot hole when Code tells Kawaki that he knew how things boiled down, just like in the manga.

** Inojin is abrasive and has no problem {{Trash Talking]]ing others, but he has the best intentions at heart.

* NemesisWeapon: [[Kawaki vs Boruto in the opening scene]]. The first one uses a bo stuff, while the later is implied to use [[spoiler: Sasuke's sword, Kusanagi]].

* WouldHitAGirl: As ''Boruto'' is filled with both {{Action Girl}}s and {{Dark Action Girl}}s, the "I'm not gonna fight a woman because they are a woman" mentality would quickly get anyone who thinks this killed. Therefore, most of male characters don't care if their opponent is a woman, being them hero or villain, otherwise they would be dead. Naruto would have been killed if he didn't choose to [[spoiler: [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomp]] [[DarkActionGirl Delta]]]], while [[TheDreaded Deepa]] cared next to nothing that Sarada is just a preteen girl, trashing and punching her in the face.
