Bob's a cop in LosAngeles. He's a dedicated hard-working officer of the LAPD and is married to Alice. One day, Alice is killed in a carjacking. The perp is found dead a week later from an overdose.

Bob is changed forever. From now on, every murderer is the man who killed Alice. Every crime is basically the murder of his wife.

Please note that this example covers events similar to being widowed; e.g., the loss of a long-term girlfriend.
