I don\'t remember the game being intentionally tear jerking as a whole.

*** Don't forget Shadow Of The Colossus - the music is exciting action-adventure stuff (except for the final boss), but the ending is possibly the most bitter-sweet thing ever in gaming.

A single TearJerker in an otherwise normal game hardly makes it one designed to depress the player.

Utsuge is the Japanese portmanteau for "depressing game". As the name implies, these games' goal is to make the player cry. Most of them are of the VisualNovel variety, in which the player is guided through an increasingly (melo)dramatic story.

Valid point.

* An even rarer non-Bishoujo, non-dating, Western example: GearsOfWar. The second one especially twists the knife, delighting in killing all the most sympathetic and BadAss non-player characters in the most depressing ways possible.
** Arguable, since most of them are cases of WeHardlyKnewYe, like Kim and Tai. Maria's scene, however, I've got no complaints. But those are just character deaths, and if you were to include games where the character deaths are sad, this list would be much bigger, and if you remove said deaths, [=GoW=] would have no business being anywhere near this list, so that hardly qualifies it for being a depressing game.

* A Dance With Rogues is a BreakTheCutie story for the player character. In the opening sequence, your entire family gets massacred by an invading army and you get raped. Then you are forced into working for the city's equivalent of TheMafiya, and just when you are getting settled and used to it your friend Caron gets brutally murdered right in front of you.
