* In the ''Literature/SagaOfTheVolsungs'', the sword Gram was given to Sigurd's ancestor Sigmund by some one-eyed stranger (read Odin). Gram broke when Sigmund died in battle. Gram the Broken Sword was inherited by Sigurd, and his foster father Regin, who was the not entirely human brother of Fafnir, reforged the sword.

* In [[NorseMythology Norse legends]], there are the dwarves (or dark elves) Sindri and Brokkr. To win a bet with Loki, they forge three magical treasures, a living, golden boar for Freyr, a gold ring that duplicates itself every nine nights for Odin, and for Thor, his hammer Mjollnir. And this is despite Loki sabotaging every attempt. Two of the treasures turned out fine, but Mjolnir's handle was too short thanks to Loki. Sindri crafted Thor's iron gloves so he could safely wield the hammer anyway.
* In relation to the Ring cycle:
** Remember Alberich? The dwarf from ''[[RichardWagner The Ring of the Nibelungs]]''? Well, he stole the magic Rhinegold and forged the ring that spawned the 20-hour Opera [[spoiler:and eventually caused the whole world to burn down]]. Now THAT's an ultimate blacksmith.
** Völund/Vaulund, who forged Sigurd's sword Gram, that could cut cleanly through an anvil and a tuft of wool.
** In the original Volsung Saga, the sword Gram was given to Sigurd's ancestor Sigmund by some One-Eyed bloke (read Odin). Gram broke when Sigmund died in battle. Gram the Broken Sword was inherited by Sigurd, and his foster father Regin Smith, who was the not entirely human brother of Fafnir, reforge the sword.
** Völund/Vølund/Vaulund Smith on the other hand was a guy who married a Valkyrie. When his wife found her old Feather cloak and returned to Valhall, Völund was moping around a bit, and forged a lot of nice things hoping for his wife to return. A king discovered him and caught and crippled him, just to force him to make amazing tools for the kingdom. Völund returned the favor by killing the king's two sons, making [[HornyVikings drinking bowls of their skulls]]. Then he raped the king's daughter and flew away on homemade wings.
