Too keep the planet from ''total'' extinction, the sun still shines on the oceans after about a hundred miles away from land to promote plankton growth and so on. After he is defeated and the sun is restored, there is ''another'' wave of extinctions as the Dark Kingdom-based life dies off, along with another big percentage of humanity who have adapted to it to survive.
