* The Super Saiyan (and its variants) from ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' is easily the TropeCodifier; a legendary warrior with an increasingly long mane of blond hair who gains an order of magnitude of power. This is achieved out of a cross between strength, a pure (good, evil, determined, etc.) heart, and [[TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening a ]]''[[TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening really]]'' [[TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening bad day]]. Unlike most Super Modes on this page, the Super Saiyan transformation has no serious drawbacks, although it takes conscious effort to maintain. It's essentially a permanent boost to strength.

** Before there was the Super Saiyan, there was the functionally similar but inferior Kaio-ken technique. This has a red aura and increases the user's strength and speed by a specific numerical factor (usually 2, 4, 10 or 20), but puts a proportional strain on the body, which can cause injury it held for too long. After Super Saiyan, Kaio-ken becomes obsolete and isn't seen again except in a filler arc and [[spoiler: ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', when Goku finds he can combine it with the most powerful variant of Super Saiyan]].

The SuperTrope to InvincibilityPowerUp, LimitBreak, SuperpoweredEvilSide, DeadlyUpgrade, and often regarded as a OneWingedAngel act for heroes. Related to superpowered {{Animorphism}} and occasionally SuperEmpowering. TurnedRed is the bad guy version of this. A PowerUpFullColorChange and the StandardPowerUpPose may be its visual indicators. A FusionDance sometimes results in this trope. When used by characters with MultiformBalance, expect the SuperMode to be either AllYourPowersCombined or LightningBruiser.
