Sometimes, it's not just enough to have your character opposed by the evil opposition and the complete morons to make them seem right. When you really want to make the opposition look bad -- racist, sexist, whateverist, stupid and two-dimensional all at once -- that's when you have them throw around accusations of Straw Treason.

A Straw Treason accusation is when the author has someone (almost always a StrawmanPolitical) automatically assume that the StrawTraitor will hold the same views as them because of their race, gender, background, or whatever, and then accuse them of treason when they do not; of course, the StrawTraitor holds whatever views the author projects into them, making the StrawmanPolitical who accuses them look both foolish and biased.

Occasionally the author of a work will create a StrawTraitor from the third person and expect the viewer to seriously view them as a traitor to the cause, but more frequently it is the accusation of treason itself that is the strawman.

Usually the StrawTraitor is an Unacceptable Target. This has the further benefit of making it difficult to attack the StrawTraitor without appearing to be, well, insensitive. Anyone who tries will often end up invoking mean-spirited racial stereotypes and further lose audience sympathy.

Some authors can use this effect to make arguments and attacks against Unacceptable Targets that they would feel squeamish making directly themselves; for instance, if it would look bad for the author to criticize 'foolanders' directly, the author might NWordPrivileges create a straw-foolander and put all the attacks in their mouth. It can also be used to lend a false weight to those arguments -- if a foolander says it, or if even a foolander supports such-and-such-a-law that has been accused of being anti-foolander, well, then, it has to be all right!

Unlike the other tropes in TheWarOnStraw, the 'straw' in StrawTraitor refers to the larger rhetorical device and not a specific type of character; it is usually the person making the accusation of "treason" that is being set up as a strawman (though, as noted, Straw Traitors themselves are sometimes used to deliver potentially racially, ethnically, culturally, or otherwise-charged Author Filibusters from a 'safe' position.)

Compare and contrast the StrawHypocrite, who seems like he isn't a traitor, but is the genuine article.

* Seen in Coupling where Sally accuses a gay man of being a traitor because he supports the Conservatives.
* Used to great effect in an early episode of TheWestWing, where Josh is arguing with a Republican congressman, Matt Skinner, over provisions in a proposed anti-gay marriage law. ** The US Supreme Court said that since the Boy Scouts are a private group, they can refuse homosexuals. Most lawsuits now attempt to remove the special consideration that the Scouts get from governments, which are not allowed to discriminate in most places. The Scouts still get special bonuses from governments, including the US Congress giving them free use of Federal lands and other stuff that other people don't get.
