* In security parlance, a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Team Red Team]]Team]] is a group that launches fake attacks against various assets in order to gauge responses and test security holes. What puts them in this trope is that the attacked group doesn't know that it's a fake attack until it's over (just as they would in real life).

* It's speculated thatthis was the crux of Gendo's plan in NeonGenesisEvangelion : get Shinji to hate him so he can synchronize with Unit 01. Of course, this i heavily debated, given that much is left ambiguous by the MindScrew. A much straighter example is in RebuildOfEvangelion, as can be seen on the HighOctaneNightmareFuel for that movie.

* Vriska in ''{{Homestuck}}'' uses this justification to explain some of her eviller acts, like giving the main antagonist the powers of a god just so John, her student, would have to become stronger to beat him. {{Deconstructed}} in that it's shown to be the egotistical madness that it was, and none of the other characters approve of her actions.

* Mr. Miyagi's "training" in ''TheKarateKid''.
** Well, if Mr. Miyagi had called the police or Daniel's father in about the damaged hedges, forced Daniel to do physical labor for a week as recompense, and then revealed the whole thing had been training in blocking technique, I'd agree wholeheartedly. As it is, Miyagi's actions are inscrutable, but neither threatening nor quite villanous... and they come in response to Daniel actually ''asking'' him for training, so there isn't too high a stealth coefficient here. Borderline, though.
