** This troper once saw a documentary where it was explained that during the decay process, the skin contracts from the fingers. This makes it look like as if the nails had grown. Cue superstitious Romanians desecrating a grave to cut out the corpse's heart to prevent it from raising. And this happened ''in the twentieth century''. No comment.

* Possibly the TropeNamer, the old Sega arcade stand and cartridge ''AlteredBeast'' has the player character being reanimated while Zeus appears in the sky with a crystal ball saying, "I command you to rise from your grave and rescue my daughter." The "Rise from your grave" portion is said in audio, and is quite {{Narm}}y (sound compression leads to ElmuhFuddSyndwome): [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJx-qIqWRuo "Wise fwom youw gwave!"]]

Note that you shouldn't expect this to be possible in real life: Six feet of dirt are ''heavy''. Also, go to any modern morturary. Anything breaking out of those metal streamlined megaboxes we call coffins these days had better have SuperStrength.

SuperStrength. Not to mention that even if you ''could'' escape from a box under six feet of dirt somehow, it still wouldn't result in the usual sight of a hand popping out of the ground: instead, the displacement of all that dirt would result in a huge mound popping up ahead of you.

* The Bride from ''KillBill'' did this in Part 2. She wasn't actually DEAD, but she still [[ChekhovsSkill one-inch punched]] through the coffin lid and clawed her way out of her own grave. And then walked into a diner across from the graveyard, covered in dirt, with bloody hands, and asked for a bottle of water. The clerk's face was priceless...

* In [[VampireTheMasquerade]], The Sabbat use this as a recruiting technique when they need more foot soldiers. They abduct a bunch of random humans, turn them into vampires, and bury them. If any of them are tough enough to make it out, the trauma and blood-starvation has usually made them crazy enough to join the Sabbat.

* ''{{Fallout New Vegas}}'' started with you rescued from a shallow grave after being left for dead. When you finally catch up with the man who buried you, one of the possible things you can tell him is that you dug yourself out of the ground to come after him.

* Averted on ''Series/{{Heroes}}''. You would expect the immortal Adam Munroe to eventually be able to work his way free of the coffin Hiro put him in but he doesn't.
** You really wouldn't: Adam's resistance to death comes from a HealingFactor, not any kind of SuperStrength. Coffin opens outward, there's six feet of ground above you... yeah.
** Anyway, he was only in there a few days. Maybe he would have worked himself out eventually, if only when the coffin rotted.

* The ''{{Death Note}}'' fanfic [[http://anime.adultfanfiction.net/story.php?no=600047145 ''Redeemer'']] used this to great effect:
-->He was soaked on the other side of the door— long hair now hung past his shoulders, plastered to a pale and forlorn face—so familiar and distinctly beautiful and utterly… wrecked with what seemed like misery and anxiety and every last emotion L had heard in his voice [[spoiler:before he’d killed him]]... Until the fist banged on the door from outside, and the voice yelled at him over the weather: “L, goddamnit, open the fucking door!!”
