* When Arturia is knocked out in Light the Blue Touch Paper and Run Like Hell, she dreams about being in the car while Irisviel is very much enjoying driving. They brake because Loki pops in the road to sell them t-shirts, then Medea comes and asks Iri her driving license. Arturia is understandably confused.

** Used for MoodWhiplash in Literature/HarryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenix when Harry, before seeing Mr. Weasley attacked by Nagini, has a dream in which Cho Chang finds him in the Room of Requirement and demands Chocolate Frog cards while he's trying to put up Christmas decorations shaped like Dobby's head. Given a more benign usage in the same book with his dream of watching Neville and Professor Sprout waltz in the Room of Requirement while Professor [=McGonagall=] plays the bagpipes. And Ron and Hermione wearing crowns after they get named Prefect and Mrs. Weasley sobbing over Kreacher's corpse. There was also the dream where he nearly got shot by a walking cannon.

** Subverted later in Hogfather, however. Some characters' ridiculous childhood nightmares -- like the big scary wardrobe in the corner of the room that wants to eat you -- come to life, and scare the pants off the hardened criminals they terrorise.

When people actually dream, it doesn't make sense. Things happen in random orders, for no good reason. Reality routinely shifts, unnoticed by the dreamer.Sometimes, the dreamer notices the reality-shift. Nevertheless, "dream" is an incredibly potent metaphor. We use "dream" to mean "aspiration", and "nightmare" to mean "fear". Fictional characters are also likely to have meaningful dreams of some variety -- either because they may have a supernatural ability that gives them these dreams, or just because, due to the LawOfConservationOfDetail, only their meaningful dreams are reported in the story.

* VideoGame/LSDDreamEmulator is based entirely around this, and specifically some details of the creator's dreams. As such, nothing therein really makes sense, textures keep changing, and (aside from in Flashbacks) no two days are exactly alike.
