Similar but distinct from several tropes, as follows. If Alice wants to ''live'' so she can work for the good, he's TheAtoner. If she [[PowerOfTrust trusts Bob not to kill her]] but nonetheless sets up a situation that would allow her to do so, it's KillMeNowOrForeverStayYourHand. If she indeed wants to die but would rather die fighting, she's a DeathSeeker; if she's incapable of killing herself and wants someone she trusts to do it, it's ICannotSelfTerminate. If she is a villain trying to invoke IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim, it's StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred, and if she doesn't believe Bob will be able to do it, it's YouWouldntShootMe.

Alex did something terrible to Bob. Whether it was [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone a mistake]], an act that [[BrainwashedAndCrazy he had no way to prevent]] or something he did before a HeelFaceTurn, he regrets it now. Very much.

So he meets Bob, confesses his guilt, and offers up his life. This can take one of two flavors:

# Alex believes he deserves death, and it seems appropriate to him that Bob should be the one to kill him.
# Alex believes he deserves punishment, and it seems appropriate to him to let Bob decide what the punishment should be, up to and including death.

Similar but distinct from several tropes, as follows. If Alex wants to ''live'' so he can work for the good, he's TheAtoner. If he is a villain trying to invoke IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim, it's StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred, and if he doesn't believe Bob will be able to do it, it's YouWouldntShootMe.

It's rare for this to actually result in Alex's death. Heroic characters will be just too forgiving or pacifistic, while less upstanding characters are likely to respond with "You're NotWorthKilling" or "[[CruelMercy You deserve a long life alone with your guilt]]". The exception is when Bob considers it a MercyKill to take Alex's life, which is more likely when Bob has DeathSeeker tendencies himself.
