As with many things, Japan has a specific term for Perverse Sexual Lust: "Nijigen no fechi" (二次元のフェチ)--literally, "two-dimensional fetish". More than a few otaku suffer from this syndrome, developing crushes on popular anime, manga, and even videogame characters, in some cases to the point where they prefer the objects of their crushes to "real" girls/women. In fact, according to [[http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/3283463/Japanese-launch-campaign-to-marry-comic-book-characters.html these]] [[http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98910-Korean-Otaku-Marries-Anime-Body-Pillow news]] [[http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/26/magazine/26FOB-2DLove-t.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0 articles]], some fans even go so far as to attempt to marry the objects of their desire. The related terms [[GratuitousEnglish "waifu" and "husbando"]], which became subject to MemeticMutation, are broader in scope and can also apply to real people.

When a fictional character lusts after a RealLife person, then it may be a CelebCrush. If a creator falls in love with their ''own'' character, who then comes to life, see PygmalionPlot.
