* ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'': The closest thing to romance is background character [[MauveShirt Gretchen's]] ''possible'' crush on [[HeroAntagonist Dib]]. WordOfGod clearly established that "liking each other is not the point" and that [[VillainProtagonist Zim]] does not love anyone. The Valentine's Day episode seems to parody the very idea: Zim "dates" the new girl, [[TheDarkChick Tak]], because he mistakes her violent abuse for how humans show affection and wants to study how it works. Once he cruelly "breaks up" with her, he's surprised when she not only doesn't cry, but [[TheReveal reveals herself to be another Irken trying to steal his job]].

Early on there are signs of attraction between Ed and Winry, but as the story split off from the manga, their relationship became more like siblings. And then there is Rose who is clearly crushing on Ed, but he either doesn't notice or pretends he doesn't notice. [[spoiler:And in the end, Ed ends up in an alternate world, ending any potential of him getting with either girl anyway.]] The finale ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemistTheConquerorOfShamballa'' was supposed to have a LoveTriangle between Alfons, Ed, and Noah but this was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen scrapped mid-development]], leading to a film devoid of any romance except ''possibly'' [[spoiler:Winry's hug and goodbye with Edward]] and the German Hughes'. As far as everyone else goes, Mustang and Hawkeye get ShipTease during the ending but little more, and Al's manga love interest doesn't even appear/exist in this version.

** In "[[Recap/ArthurS8E9FleaToBeYouAndMeKissAndTell Kiss and Tell]]," Emily brags to D.W. about being kissed on the hand by a boy, leading D.W. to seek out a kiss from a boy as well out of jealousy. ** PlayedWith in "[[Recap/ArthurS14E2TheAgentOfChangeDWUntiesTheKnot D.W. Fan-Preferred Couple is when fans ship components of a canon couple with other people.

** ''WesternAnimation/{{Zootopia}}'' does not end in a romance between the two leads, who happen to be both male and female and end up working together. ([[FanPreferredCouple Try telling this to fans, though]].) They also happen to be members of different species of animals. The director has openly stated that he doesn't mind if fans choose to see their relationship as romantic, though.

* ''Manga/HowToKeepAMummy'', despite being a slice-of-life dramedy with both male and female protagonists, has zero hint of romance between them. Sora and Tazuki fantasize about having Asa as a little sister, and Asa shows no romantic attraction to any of the boys. The only vague elements of romance are Tazuki’s crush on Sora’s aunt Kaede (who’s 12 years older) and Tazuki’s little Tsukiyo being in love with Sora. The former is obviously unrequited and played more as an occasional RunningGag, and the latter is a minor character to begin with.

** In ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'': it seems like the only couples allowed consist of minor characters. None of the main characters are in relationships, and the only ones who seems to want to be are Brock and later Serena. Ash is a ChickMagnet but is ObliviousToLove. Not even the Pokémon themselves get much romance, despite breeding being a thing in the games and being present in other adaptations like ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'', although there are some exceptions to this, such as Ash's Butterfree and Jessie's Dustox (and even then, we barely get to see their romance). However, in the original soundtrack, "Music/Pokemon2BAMaster", there is a love song which implies that Misty has very strong feelings for Ash; while it was added in by 4Kids, the original Japanese version of the anime had ShipTease between Satoshi and Kasumi too, though it's never been confirmed as anything concrete. A few [[ShippingGoggles popularly-agreed]] "exceptions" exist: Ash was kissed by two movie-only characters (Melody and Latias) and in-series [[spoiler:Serena]] was implied to have kissed him as well in the final episode of ''XY&Z''. Even then, for the last one, the camera [[KissingDiscretionShot pans away]] from their faces so it's unknown if it was on the lips or just on a cheek. Professors Kukui and Burnet also do get married onscreen in ''Sun and Moon'', though with no onscreen kissing between them.
** As for ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'' itself, an official relationship chart states that all the relationships between the current main characters are platonic with the exception of a single one-sided crush and ''the'' one couple whose romance was the major focus of their arc(s). ShipTease abounds but {{Official Couple}}s do not.

Another trick is to [[AdultsAreUseless ratchet the age]] [[ThereAreNoAdults of the characters]] down so it's realistic for them to not be thinking about such things. Particularly common in children's entertainment. One may also make the characters rather mature such as late middle age or older, suggesting that they would be past that sort of thing by then. They could also just be HappilyMarried(to someone offscreen) or an established FamilyMan, even if said spouse and kids are never seen. Common with CoolOldLady or CoolOldGuy main characters.

* ''Series/{{Seinfeld}}'' had a variation which was referred to internally as "No Hugging, No Learning." Basically the characters are committed to each other about as far as [[AnthropicPrinciple what is needed for the plot to happen]], but beyond that entertain a mild indifference to the emotional well-being of the others in the group. Only a handful of episodes have them show any sort of excitement to be with each other, and beyond [[BetterAsFriends Jerry and Elaine]] having romantic history they avoided exploring anything of the internal cast past the third season. The show was otherwise rife with romantic juggling among all the characters with people outside the main group, solely to have it fall apart in spectacular fashion.
