Changed the trope image to be layed out more vertically, I think it works better this way but maybe there's a third option I'm not seeing.

Rewrote the trope description. I realize I've invoked Alice and Bob here, but I don't believe it's a case of Example As A Thesis since it's not an actual scenario, it's a concise description of the trope that happens to use names for clarity's sake. If anything, I think the article used to have Example As A Thesis, and now it doesn't. Also added trope image.

Sometimes, a person gets caught in a situation where they want to say something to someone else, but doesn't want to be the one to say it, mainly because they're too embarrassed to show themselves or only one of their friends can speak for them. So, they perform a game of Charades behind another person's back to tell their friend what to say to that person. This is obviously so they don't attract the attention of the person or people the friend is trying to speak to. Hilarity often ensues as the friend sometimes misinterprets the gestures that their pal is signaling towards them.

Simply, this is when Alice is standing behind Bob, and using non-verbal gestures
to say communicate something to someone else, but doesn't want Charlie, who is talking to Bob. Alice is effectively coaching Charlie on what to say.

The reasons for this generally fall into two categories:
* Alice might need something
to be the one communicated to say it, mainly because they're Bob, but it's not possible for her to do it herself. Maybe she's too embarrassed to show themselves or only be the one of their friends can speak saying it to him. Maybe Bob wouldn't listen to her, [[TheOnlyOneITrust but he will listen to Charlie.]] [[SentIntoHiding Maybe she doesn't want Bob to even know she's there.]] Whatever the case, this is communication by proxy for them. So, they perform ''Alice's benefit.''
* Charlie needs something from Bob, but Bob won't help unless he's asked in
a game of Charades behind another person's back specific way - one which Charlie doesn't know. Alice wants to tell their friend help out, so she mimes what or how Charlie needs to say communicate, for ''Charlie's benefit.''

Crucial
to both categories of trope examples is that person. This Bob isn't aware (at least initially) of Alice's presence and/or efforts to communicate to Charlie. If Bob was aware that Charlie was being coached, it might ruin everything. As this is obviously so they don't attract the attention of the person or people the friend is trying to speak to. Hilarity [[PlayedForLaughs often a comedy trope,]] hilarity often ensues as the friend sometimes Charlie misinterprets the gestures that their pal is signaling towards them.

* In ''Film/DownPeriscope'', the ''Stingray'' is running full silent at one point to avoid detection by their opponent sub, the ''Orlando''. Cmdr. Dodge spots his sonar operator's rack of cassette tapes of whale songs and is inspired into a plan, so he gets Sonar's attention and mimes for him to engage in some whale mimickry, gesturing to the tapes and his own gaping mouth. What follows is a couple minutes of the pair constantly misinterpreting each other, especially when fellow seaman Nitro joins in the "conversation" while displaying no obvious hints that he understands what Dodge is trying to convey to Sonar.
