* Fanfic/SuddenContact: Arcturus Mengsk. He tricks the Council into helping the Sons of Korhal overthrow the Confederacy by appearing weak and offering Terran technology to them. After which, the Council takes the bait, believing they could gain new technology and have a new government to work with. However, once the war goes bad for the Council, and the Zerg start to invade Citadel Space, Mengsk tricks the Council into using the psi-emitter on Tarsonis to end the war quickly. Since Saren was the one who planted the psi-emitter in this story, Mengsk blackmails the Council with this information, knowing the public would turn on them if the knowledge was released. This not only forces the Council to begrudgingly recognize Mengsk as the Emperor of the newly formed Terran Dominion, but also grant humanity a seat in the Council in exchange for Terran forces helping them fight the Zerg.

* The Other Girl in the Hooker!verse. She's successfully ruining her other personality's (Penny) life, she gleefully mindfucks the Critic and Chick, and Linkara falls into her trap when she pretends to be Penny and be a crying mess.

** Erebus of the Word Bearers managed to bring about the Horus Heresy with a few carefully timed manipulations. First, he teamed up with Lorgar's mentor Kor Phaeron to lead Lorgar to the Chaos gods. Then he followed up by executing a convoluted scheme to get Horus sworn to darkness. Unfortunately for him, he has trouble when the pieces in his plans act for themselves, leading to him getting his face peeled off by Horus (non-fatal, but certainly not fun).

The Manipulative Bastard is the master manipulator of emotions and perspectives. This is the guy who gets off on playing head games -- clever and dangerous and lacking comedic overtones. He or she always has ThePlan, but rather than do any work, the Manipulative Bastard prefers to play on other characters' emotions and then watch the victims destroy themselves as they waste their energy on fighting against fake dangers or their friends.

* Fanfic/HigherLearning: Gendo ruthlessly manipulated everyone to achieve his goals… and he was not happy when he realized that there was another manipulative bastard in the town who had been plotting against him completely undetected for a good while.

* Fanfic/DoingItRightThisTime: Gendo used their employees’ emotions to manipulate them in the original timeline. Asuka has realized he set her up to hate Rei because it made her easier to control and she is done playing by his rules, so she has befriended Rei. Rei also theorizes he manipulated Ritsuko's jealousy of Rei so that Ritsuko would be more driven to fulfill his agenda.

* Fanfic/HERZ: Misato is a benign example. She leads a peace-keeping military organization and is not above of using someone else’s motivations and emotions (like Kurumi’s curiosity) to lead that person on. However she does not like it and she restrains herself a lot.

* Sylvester in Literature/Twig is both this and an UnreliableNarrator even though he tells the story in first person. Usually he employs his skills to predict what his opponents will do if panicked or spooked, and then does that do them using his skills as TheSocialExpert, but just as often he'll have to deal with an ongoing situation and adapt on the fly, preventing him from playing TheChessmaster. Most notably, at one point he manipulates matters at the breakfast table so that firstly, one of the younger orphans doesn't have to eat food she doesn't like, the orphan matron is happy with him for resolving the situation, and he gets an extra spoonful of oatmeal.

* Professor Moriarty in Fanfic/ChildrenOfTime. He also qualifies as a MagnificentBastard, but it's worth pointing out his manipulative tendencies -- his four episodes are by and large driven by his manipulation of the heroes. It becomes his obsession and his FatalFlaw: he can manipulate anybody and everybody into doing what he wants, but he doesn't believe that his victims can break free of his manipulations. Basically has a massive god complex.

the currency hoarding has turned out to have purpose since this was first written
* Gaea from Series/Noob makes good use of her PuppyDogEyes to avoid contributing to her guild's fund, can do nasty blackmailing when she has the material for it and seems qui proeficient in the ConMan domain. Her plan involves accumulating all the in-game currency she can, apparently by pure Greed, but Ivy assumes an undisclosed purpose in Season 5. Cumulative info from media has her use PuppyDog eyes and general charisma in the webseries and comic, the novels indicate that she tends to make speed psychological profiling of people she speaks with, is frequently scamming people and has to do a little of the lying thing to cover it all up. A few lines spoken by other characters in Season 5 however hint that after four years of her playing Horizon, "everyone knows that she's an opportunist".
