After a long night with the guys, Bob comes home at 3 a.m., and walks into the room. He reaches for the light switch, until he hears a familiar voice saying nearby, "Hello Bob." It is his wife, Alice, perhaps in curlers and carrying a [[RollingPinOfDoom rolling pin]]. [[OhCrap Bob is in for it now.]]

This is a trope most commonly found in WesternAnimation and sitcoms, where a married man is out later than usual and upon returning is suddenly surprised to see his wife, despite it being late at night, or just not expecting her at all. The room is usually dark. It can be expanded in all areas, like children coming home late at night with their parents waiting.

After
lightswitch on a long night with the guys, Bob comes home at 3 a.m., and walks into the room. He reaches for the wall or one's portable light switch, until he hears a familiar voice saying nearby, "Hello Bob." It is his wife, Alice, perhaps in curlers and carrying a [[RollingPinOfDoom rolling pin]]. [[OhCrap Bob is in for it now.]]

This is a trope most commonly found in WesternAnimation and sitcoms, where a married man is out later than usual and upon returning is suddenly surprised to see his wife, despite it being late at night, or just not expecting her at all. The
source. And... Surprise! In the room is usually dark. It can an unexpected sight. Perhaps the character is in a lot of danger now, or at least some trouble. Or maybe it's just a SurpriseParty.

This trope covers a situation in which a reveal of somebody's presence is made by turning on a light. Supertrope to MatchlightDangerRevelation, which involves going to a dark location and revealing danger via a lit match. The surprise might
be expanded part of a CaughtComingHomeLate situation: someone waits -- often in all areas, like children the dark -- for another who's coming home late at night past curfew.

If a light isn't turned on but a character is revealed as they walk out of the dark, it's EmergingFromTheShadows. A dangerous entity waiting in the dark for someone in that person's own home who only wants to speak
with their parents waiting.
