* ''[[Literature/{{Chalion}} The Hallow Hunt]]'': Ingrey is actually rather youthful for a [[Creator/LoisMcMasterBujold Bujold]] protagonist, but the tortures he endured--meant to help him control the wolf-spirit he harbors--made him "frighteningly self-controlled" not to mention [[DeadpanSnarker dour and sarcastic]]. His love interest lampshades it:
-->"Now what makes you grow grim?" Ijada demanded.
-->"Nothing."
-->Her lips twisted in exasperation. "To be sure."

* In ''Series/DoctorWho'', the Ninth Doctor refers to Humans as "stupid apes," but saved Earth again and again. In fact, every incarnation of the Doctor has been this to some extent or another, but it's become much more evident in the revival, he usually manages to hide it well with his humour and childlike excitement. This is a man who has seen all of time and space, he knows full well that there is no final victory, and that evil will never be totally stamped out, but he keeps fighting all the way, because he's the Doctor, and it's what he does.

* In ''Series/DoctorWho'', The Doctor from ''Series/DoctorWho'' qualifies for this in nearly all of his incarnations at one point or another, but a few stand otu among the rest.
** The First Doctor began it all; he was a cranky old man who still saved the universe often.
** The Third Doctor was exiled to Earth, and to outsiders could be seen as moody, and he often butted heads with TheBrigadier while facing alien threats.
** After five regenerations, the Sixth Doctor reverted back to a brash, difficult individual, yet constantly facing foes and battling corruption throughout time and space.

* Literature/NeroWolfe's assistant Archie Goodwin responds to most of the world's frustrations with a sarcastic, cynical quip, but as Wolfe perceptively notes deep down he's quite the knight-errand. For all his snark, it's not hard to provoke him into rushing out headlong in order to do someone a good deed -- particularly if the someone needing the good deed doing is a pretty young lady.

* Blake Thorburn of ''Literature/{{Pact}} is a formerly homeless man who has seen much of the worst that humanity has to offer, from beatings to events so traumatic that he refuses to elaborate on them, and sees himself as a [[BrokenBird fundamentally broken person]], but he [[RousseauWasRight expresses his faith in the inherent goodness of humanity]] nonetheless, as there exist many people whose good actions outweighed the bad and helped him when he needed help. He therefore strives to do the right thing, even though, as a hereditary [[TheLegionsOfHell diabolist]], everyone expects him to fall to villainy and most supernatural creatures despise him.

* Kiina from ''Franchise/{{Bionicle}}''. She's a tough, {{Ladette}} ActionGirl who is dissatisfied with her planet as it is, and believes that there are other, better worlds out there. Naturally, everyone thinks she's nuts. Then, when she turns out to be right, she suddenly morphs into a GenkiGirl. [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap She got better.]]

These characters show up often in FilmNoir and in LowFantasy. Law enforcement is a particularly attractive career, but the Knight in Sour Armor will usually hold back from becoming a CowboyCop. Very frequently, they end up as TheObiWan, a GrumpyBear with JadeColoredGlasses, TheLastDJ, or a CoolOldGuy if they last long enough. As teammates, they are often the SourSupporter. They also frequently end up as {{Hero Antagonist}}s and extreme [[TheWoobie Woobies]]. This is often the final state of TheAtoner post HeelFaceTurn. Despite their cynicism, they behave like TheAntiNihilist. Compare AngstWhatAngst, for characters who take the [[BeingGoodSucks troubles of a good alignment]] with far less complaint, and the NobleDemon, who will [[CardCarryingVillain proudly declare himself evil]], but still finds himself doing good once in awhile. Converted SillyRabbitIdealismIsForKids or GoodIsOldFashioned believers may well find themselves becoming this {{trope}} if the heroes can pull them round. If they don't like idealism but don't like cynicism either then you have a touch of SillyRabbitCynicismIsForLosers. Compare JerkassWoobie, a character who spits in the face of the [[CharacterAlignment alignment]] chart. Compare TheSnarkKnight for the NonActionGuy variant.

* Blake from ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'' has this mentality towards heroes, particularly {{Wide Eyed Idealist}}s like Ruby. She wants to end corruption, and refuses to [[spoiler:partake in the violence that The White Fang inflicts on humans, who systematically oppress Faunus]]. However, she balks at Ruby's heroic nature and desire for a happy, fairy-tale ending.
