* In ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'', during the "Dimensional World" arc, Brron, the Mad King of Dark World, had Chazz, Hasselberry, Alexis, Atticus, and Syrus infused with Wicked Runes of Anger, Hatred, Sadness, Anguish, and Doubt respectfully, intending to use them as sacrifices to complete the Super Polymerization card. Unfortunately, his minions were only able to abduct the first four while Syrus managed to allude them out of sheer luck. Despite this, Brron was sure that four tributes would be enough, with him having his Wicked Canon spell card absorbing Jaden's friends one by one during their duel. Unfortunately, when Brron attempted to bring forth Super Polymerization, he found that he could, realizing that he did indeed need all five runes. Jaden was naturally furious with Brron for using his friends lives for something like a simple card, especially because it was for nothing.

** The entire Holy Grail War system by the time of Fate Zero has degenerated into this. The original system the current one is a copy of was modeled after summoning heroes to defeat Beasts representing Evils of humanity. Due to the three families focusing more on either destroying each other or their own selfish goals, the ritual is permanently corrupted. This is why InUniverse ChaoticEvil Servants like Caster of Fate Zero or Rider of Fate Stay Night could be summoned. And the original wish is impossible to make--any wish made on the corrupt Grail will backfire.
