This may be either an innate or acquired characteristic. In the first case, it's usually associated with characters and creatures with [[PlayingWithFire fire-based]] ElementalPowers, {{Breath Weapon}}s, and the like, because the flames usually come out of their own bodies and this is a {{Required Secondary Power|s}} to avoid being burned alive whenever they throw out fireballs. It is also usually associated with creatures found in very high-temperature environments, such as volcanoes or [[FireAndBrimstoneHell the fiery pits of Hell]], for the same reasons. In the second case, this ability may be granted by special protective clothing, {{Magic Potion}}s and the like, granting characters the ability temporarily venture into environments where they'd otherwise burn alive.

The inverses are WeakToFire and KillItWithFire, where burning something is the best way to get ride of it, ManOnFire, in which people burn easily, and MadeOfIncendium, in which something burns really easily. Due to fire's common use as a weapon, this is very very prone to being an ExploitedImmunity. Someone with this power may walk dramatically OutOfTheInferno. If it's able to catch fire but that just makes it more of a problem, that's InfernalRetaliation, and if being on fire just makes someone look cool, that's IncendiaryExponent. When a character is not only immune to fire and heat but actively strengthened by them, that's FeedItWithFire. In the case of fire-based creatures with fire immunity, this overlaps with LikeCannotCutLike.

Most creatures find burning to be something of a problem, and thus cannot safely interact with fire, burning objects or combustible materials. Some, however, find themselves entirely immune to the effects of fire, and unable to be harmed by either direct contact with flames or scorching temperatures. Unlike more combustible personages, they may freely walk into infernos, handle burning objects or stride across lave fields no worse for the wear.
