Petra Parker isn't so lucky; she watched an armed robber kill her aunt and uncle ''when she was four''. She is so traumatized by this that she doesn't open up about what happened for ten years. The fic's second chapter shows that she had nightmares about the event for a while after.

* ''Series/MASH'': In "Death Takes A Holiday", Mulcahy gets the 4007 to agree to bring the children from a local orphanage to spend Christmas with them. This trope is implied when the kids shudder when they first see the MASH personnel in uniform, and the orphanage leader explains that they've seen men in their uniform do terrible things. [[MoodWhiplash Klinger fixes this by taking off part of his uniform (still wearing enought to be modest) and standing there shivering]]. This makes the kids laugh hard enough to relax and get out of the car.

* In ''Film/ThePatriot'', one of the Benjamin Martin's sons is shot in front of the rest of his children, and then he takes two of the remaining boys--aged between nine and twelve--and slaughters the British soldiers responsible. Their horror as they walk back to their torched house is apparent.

* An episode of ''Series/BreakingBad'' had Jesse going after a couple of meth heads who had stolen his meth from Skinny Pete. He finds out they have a little kid, which they [[ParentalNeglect don't really care about and sometimes leave alone for days]]. Although Jesse makes him look the other way, the kid's still in the room when his mother snaps and kills his father by [[CruelAndUnusualDeath dropping an ATM on his face.]]

* ''Webcomic/PixieAndBrutus'': In one strip, CuteKitten [[ChildrenAreInnocent Pixie]] starts to watch a movie. Brutus overhears her talk about ''A Nightmare on Elmo Street'' "Freddy ''Cougar''", [[InnocentInaccurate oblivious to what it actually is]]. In a DelayedReaction Brutus realizes [[Film/ANightmareOnElmStreet what she's watching]] and [[HarmfulToMinors the horrors]] Pixie will see. [[BigBrotherInstinct He]] reacts by smashing the TV ''[[UseYourHead with his head!]]''

* In the 2005 ''Film/TheWarOfTheWorlds'' movie, Ray tries to keep his daughter, Rachel, from looking away from him as he walke her through the wreckage of a downed commercial jet. Later, when she sees a ton of dead bodies floating down a river, he covers her eyes and pulls her away. Finally, when [[spoiler:killing Ogilvy]] to try to protect her (after he [[spoiler:witnesses the Tripods harvesting blood and loses it completely]], Ray tells her to cover her eyes and ears and sing to herself so as to not to have to be exposed to it.

* ''Film/MurdersAtTheRueMorgue1971'': After Cesar and Madeline are abducted, it is revealed that when she was a child, Madeline had seen her mother murdered [[spoiler:by Cesar]], but had completely blocked it from her mind; even to the extent of forgetting the home where she used to live.

* ''WebAnimation/DeathBattle'': Whenever one of the combantants is a minor, this happens. It happened to Ben Tennyson in "Ben 10 VS Green Lantern", at least one of the combantants in "Danny Phantom VS Jake Long", and at least one of the combantants in "Steven Universe VS Star Butterfly". [[SubvertedTrope Fortunately]] for Billy Batson, "Captain Marvel VS Shazam" has him take the victory.

** Zuko was only thirteen when he suffered torture at his father's hands, and Azula was only eleven when she saw this. Zuko's experience after the Siege of the North also qualifies; he was drifting on a raft with his uncle directly after Aang had destroyed a large portion of their navy, which means that Zuko would've been floating alongside hundreds of Fire Nation corpses for weeks. He also fought an all-out war in the Battle of Yu Dao as a sixteen-year-old, and because he searched all the air temples during his hunt for the Avatar, he too would've seen hundreds of corpses.

* ''LightNovel/LordElMelloiIICaseFiles'': [[VideoGame/FateGrandOrder Olga Marie Arsimilat Animusphere]] stumbled upon her tutor's headless body, followed shortly after by her missing head, and she was 11-years-old at the time.

** This was played for comedy when a young Bart's first words were in response to walking in on his parents when he was a toddler. Bart saw it again when he was ten; Milhouse just tells him that seeing ''both'' parents doing it is better than seeing only ''[[ADateWithRosiePalms one]]'' parent [[CaughtWithYourPantsDown doing it]].

** Itachi in turn was motivated to massacre his clan by the fact that they were planning to try to take over the village, thus starting a civil war (and a world war, due to other nations seizing advantage). This prospect was unrelentingly flashing him back to his own childhood, when in the words of Tobi ([[spoiler:Obito]]), "During the Third aja World War, Itachi, barely four years old, witnessed countless people slaughtered in cold blood. A four year-old is still too immature to turn war into experience for a child, war is hell. The trauma turned Itachi into a boy who loathed war and strife, and only desired peace."

* Czeslaw Meyer in ''LightNovel/{{Baccano}}!'' is the target of extreme violence, because of his HealingFactor, he has been repeatedly tortured by a man he trusted for 200 years. He finally fights back and kills the man in question, but the only method by which he can do so involves [[GhostMemory absorbing all of his torturer's memories]], meaning that he's stuck with the memory of gleefully torturing ''himself''.

* ''LightNovel/{{Durarara}}'':

* Taken to the extreme in the ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' prequel novels (and anime adaptation) ''LightNovel/FateZero''. Not only do we finally get to see some of the horrors Sakura underwent at the hands of the Matou family, but we also get treated to the sight of Uryuu Ryunosuke offering up a small child to Bluebeard, who then cruelly treats that child to a HopeSpot before having him get dragged offscreen by a tentacled abomination to be messily slaughtered an a manner that we can hear all too well.

** 12-year old Ed sees the mangled body of a woman killed by a serial killer. Despite already being a state alchemist, it reminds him too much of the failed transmutation and causes him to faint.
* Sagara Sousuke from ''LightNovel/FullMetalPanic''. Even earlier than when he became a {{Child Soldier|s}}, he witnessed his beautiful mother dying for him, before his eyes. Her last words to him were for him to live, never give up, and fight. This most definitely contributed to his CrazySurvivalist ways in the future. Though, seeing how violent and filled with death his childhood was, he's actually ''remarkably'' [[AngstWhatAngst well adjusted]].

* In ''Literature/{{GATE}}'', [[TheHero Youji Itami]] has had it quite rough as a kid. Similarly to Sonohara from ''LightNovel/{{Durarara}}'' first he had to deal with an [[TheAlcoholic alcoholic]] [[AbusiveParents abusive father]], and then his mother went mad from the situation and after killing the bastard [[DrivenToSuicide tried to self-immolate]]. Though saved, she's still institutionalized. Fortunately, Itami managed to find a ParentalSubstitute in an up-and-rising governmental bureaucrat by the name of Taro Kano, [[IntergenerationalFriendship with whom he bonded]] over their [[{{Otaku}} mutual hobby]].

* ''Anime/MobileSuitGundam00'': Setsuna - who was most likely "inspired" by Sagara Sousuke of ''LightNovel/FullMetalPanic''. This also happens in the film ''Blood Diamond'', when Solomon's son is kidnapped by rebel troops and turned into a kid soldier.
* ''Manga/{{Monster}}''. Even disregarding the {{backstory}}, at one point, Johan very nearly [[DrivenToSuicide gets a 10-year-old to kill himself]] by, when he finds out the kid is looking for his mother, sending him into a red light district with the kind, gentle assurance that if no one claims him as their child, he's unwanted and has no reason to live.

* ''LightNovel/FullMetalPanic'': The CreepyTwins Yu Fan and Yu Lan have been repeatedly raped by [[AxCrazy Gates]] ever since they were young.

* [[MadDoctor Shingen]] from ''LightNovel/{{Durarara}}'' not only let his (then four-year-old) son Shinra witness the surgical vivisection of a naked, [[StrappedToAnOperatingTable unanesthesized]] [[HeadlessHorseman headless woman]], but handed him a scalpel and let him cut her open himself. It should be no surprise that Shinra grew up kind of weird as a result. And he's far from being the only one. Actually, the fact that he's ''the most stable and best adjusted'' of all the main characters, and about the only one in a stable and healthy relationship ([[ChildhoodFriendRomance with the very same woman]] [[{{Irony}} he cut up]] [[PrecociousCrush at four]]), speaks volumes about the DysfunctionJunction the series' characters are in.

** Negi's is more complicated, in a bad way. His cousin explained death (specifically, Negi's father's) as "going far away, where you can never see them again." This not five minutes after she told him that his father was a superhero, who would always appear to save anyone in trouble. So Negi spent the next year or so doing increasingly dangerous things to try and get his father to appear, which ended the day the the demons attacked his village. [[spoiler:At which point his father ''did'' appear.]] So for the rest of his life, there was always a little voice in his head whispering that the whole thing was his fault. Then it's revealed that [[spoiler:the people who ordered the attack on the village were specifically trying to kill Negi, due to him [[SinsOfOurFathers being the son of Arika]]. So in a way, it ''was'' his fault]].

** Before becoming the shounen lead, Negi saw his village turned to stone by demons; and [[spoiler:Asuna]], at the age of four or so, she was the focal point of a war, and saw/partially caused a FloatingContinent to be destroyed by accident, presumably killing everyone there[[note]]It's later revealed that most survived, due to Arika evacuating the continent and containing the damage by sealing Asuna and taking the blame for the mess, making herself public enemy number one.[[/note]]. She then ends up as a prisoner, forcing Nagi to bust her out. By the end of it when she's finally out of the mess, she's a semi suicidal BrokenBird before the age of ten. Yay! Luckily she [[LaserGuidedAmnesia got better, sort of.]] And now the the amnesia is in the process of being undone.

** There's also the part in [[Anime/FullmetalAlchemist the 2003 anime version]] where Al is forced to kill the abominable mess of organs and flesh they created in place of their mother, which mostly had her face. Talk about trauma. [[spoiler:It doesn't actually die (because it's not that easy to kill a homunculus) and eventually becomes Sloth.]]

* In the prologue to ''Film/BloodyReunion'', it is revelaed that Mrs Park's husband [[DrivenToSuicide hanged himself]] in front of their deformed son.

* Athena Cykes of ''VisualNovel/PhoenixWrightAceAttorneyDualDestinies'' has developed a huge complex as a child due to the gorefest UR-1 murder case. [[spoiler: She witnessed the death of her mother in front of her, stabbed someone with a knife (BloodSplatteredInnocents ensues), tried to "fix" her broken mother but failed, and got denied when she tried protecting Simon Blackquill in a court as a witness.]] She spent a full seven years training to become a lawyer, but it turns out she easily gets nervous upon taking a real trial and she's easily sent into a HeroicBSOD whenever she's reminded either about the bloody incident or how powerless she was at the time.
