*** Actually, Dumbledore's exact quote concerning the matter was that "It is our choices Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.", which was argued [[http://www.ferretbrain.com/articles/article-161.html here]] to mean that while yes, choices do matter (in a sense) it's not because the choice(s) affect an inner nature but rather reveal one which is already immutable. In other words, choices only matter insofar as they reveal that which cannot be altered, and people themselves cannot really change. So yes, choices matter more than birth, but they actually function similarly to how pureblood supremacists believe birth to work, as within the Harry Potter universe you cannot start to make different choices and change your nature, or if you do you will soon revert to your original state (like Percy did).

** There's also the part where ''people's choices make a difference in what house they end up in''. It's sort of a big plot point that choices matter more than how we're born.

*** At least conservatism has tokens - liberals would love regular representation in those papers. The fact that centrists like Frank Rich or Gail Collins, or center-right characters such as Maureen Dowd and Thomas Friedman are considered to be "liberals" who "balance" David Brooks and Ross Douthat on the supposedly left-leaning ''Times'' shows just how much the mainstream press has limited exposure to actual liberals. Even Paul Krugman tends to limit himself to economic issues, and he only got his column by accident (they thought he'd be writing chiefly about foreign macroeconomics). When there is an ''actual'' liberal like Amy Goodman, Sy Hersh, or Bill Moyers with a regular general column in a major daily, then it might be time to complain about pets or tokenism.
**** I'm sorry, Maureen Dowd is center-right?? Frank Rich is a Centrist?! The man compared the Passion of the Christ to sadistic gay pornography! Thomas Friedman is a lefty on economic/environmentalist issues, although he does have neocon tendencies. David Brooks is actually an archetypal inversion of this trope (and noted Obama supporter).

* Agnostics are often depicted as either closeted atheists (afraid of the backlash they'll get if they're open about their views; StephenCobert refers to them as "Atheists without balls") or as confused theists ("going through a period of doubt"), generally by atheists and theists respectively. Either way, they're seen as easily converted to one side or the other and thus make convenient Fox News Liberals. In reality, though, the term agnostic doesn't mean that you don't 'know' where you stand on the God issue but that you consider the ''answer'' to be 'unknown,' therefore suggesting agnosticism is the only "authentic" stance (some go so far as to say the whole discussion of God's existence is unimportant or meaningless). It's probably not helped by the fact that even a lot of people who ''identify'' as "agnostic" don't understand what it means.

*** This troper has been reading the ''Washington Post'' Editorial page for 15 years, and would like to point out that the Editorial board employs conservative commentators George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Michael Gerson (as cited above), Kathleen Parker, David Brooks (while a Obama supporter, he is quite conservative on most issues), William Kristol (on occasion), and others. Often, the Post editorial page is more conservative than liberal or ''entirely'' conservative. In particular, the paper under the reign of Fred Hiatt has taken a decidedly neo-conservative tone on several issues. The ''Pravda'' on the Potomac it is not.

* Similar to the above is Senator Laine Hanson from the film ''The Contender''. Hanson is nominated for VP by a Democratic President and considerable hay is made of the fact that she is a former Republican who contends that the party 'left her' by moving too far to the right. Yet she is an outspoken atheist with a [[HollywoodAtheist public disdain for religion]] (which was probably ''intended'' to be seen as honest and brave, but which is so clearly intolerant it makes her seem like a frothing bigot), a staunch believer in gun control, pro-choice on abortion, and completely against the death penalty... views that wouldn't have had a chance in the GOP within her political career.

** {{Your Mileage May Vary}} on that. Gryffindor puts emphasis on those who are brave of heart, which Hermione and Neville definitely are.(Read the 7th book if you don't believe me about Neville) Percy was a bit of a pompus prick, esspecially in the later books, but that doesn't neccessarily mean he belongs in the same house as Voldemort. And he did get a bit of a redemption in Deathly Hollows.

*** Vinick sounds a lot like Barry Goldwater, especially after the rise of the religious right in the 1980's, when he was libertarian in all but name. Also, some of the more influential conservative political philosophers, such as Russell Kirk, were atheists. After 8 years of Bush, Flanderization of history, and the lack of actual reporting being done by the news media it's easy to forget that conservativism and the Republican Party contain a diverse group of ideas and viewpoints. Republicans and Democrats are still people.

** Agnostic comes from the Greek "a" meaning "no" and "gnosis" meaning "knowledge." Someone who just doesn't know is sometimes called a "weak agnostic" while someone who claims that the answer is unattainable to the point that the question is meaningless is sometimes called a "strong agnostic." To make matters worse, both are sometimes called "weak atheists."
* In Canada, the (democratic socialist) New Democratic Party claims this about the ''entire Liberal Party.''

* {{Conservapedia}} claims that ''all'' liberals are this. Their definition of a liberal is a conservative who claims to be not conservative as a desperate and pathetic bid for attention. Considering that Conservapedia was created by a hardcore conservative who felt that {{Wikipedia}}'s adherence to facts, notability, and reality gave it a far too liberal bias and things start to fall into place.
** Which makes this conservative troper scratch his head because its almost the opposite of the unfair claims he usually hears from other conservatives about liberals which is either that they're hiding their socialism/communism under the liberal label or that they're trying to get their views labeled as "moderate". Oh well.

*In the Harry Potter series, it seems all of the good guys are in Gryffendor, and the bad guys are in Slytherin, no matter how obvious it is they should be in another house.

**{{Your Mileage May Vary}} on that.

**For example, Hermione was obviously a Ravenclaw
**Neville should have been in Hufflepuff
**And Percy was definitely a Slytherin

Tried to add this back in in a way which wouldn't trigger either side.

* Christopher Hitchens. Despite being an outspoken atheist, he has been embraced by neoconservatives for his pro-Iraq war views, and has even been invited to the Bush White House.

* Christopher Hitchens. Despite being an outspoken atheist, he has been embraced by neoconservatives for his pro-Iraq war views, and has even been invited to the Bush White House. He also has made some very sexist statements re: women and humor, despite often being a go-to guy for discussions about women's rights in the Islamic world.

*Christopher *** People, this is the son of Phyllis Schafly we're talking about here. The man is ''rewriting the Bible'' to be more conservative (such as taking out mentions of charity and substituting them with free market prose). He lives in his own fantasy world where liberals are just attention-whoring conservatives and anyone who disagrees with him is just doing so to piss him off. He is first and foremost a nut.
