This is especially grating if the one given the ball is a female character otherwise shown to be competent and talented, or Badass. If it happens once too often, it may lead to Chickification. Of course, there are also chances that after they dropped the ball, they come back to the routine of ass-kicking. If the Distress Ball pickup did not happen near the end of the story, she will most likely drop it, and it doesn't necessarily mean she will take part in a bigger plot in the future; she still tags along but proves that once the ball is dropped, she can still kick ass instead of being forced into the sidelines, cheering. Unless Chickification is already on full throttle, or they are Faux Action People. On the other hand, tossing the distress ball back and forth between both sides of a BattleCouple allows for all the cuteness of a RescueRomance without the weakness.

** This troper wonders why it's so arguable. Samus has fought Ridley in some form or another at least seven times before the events of other M, showing that whoever wrote the story really dropped the ball on Samus' personality, as this would be the eighth time she's faced Ridley in the chronology of Metroid's events, and the X mimicking Ridley in Metroid Fusion would bring the grand total of Ridley encounters to nine, but Metroid Fusion takes place AFTER Other M:
*** First time on Zebes in Metroid/Zero Mission (Original Ridley)
*** Second time a robotic Ridley dupe in Zero Mission (The only time it's not the original Ridley or a clone.)
*** Third time on Tallon IV when he tries to stop her from accessing the impact crater in Metroid Prime. (Original Ridley, cybernetically enhanced.)
*** Fourth time on Norion trying to stop Samus from restoring power to a megacannon that would destroy the incoming Leviathan in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. (Original Ridley, same enhancements.)
*** Fifth time on the Pirate Homeworld, as the main boss of that planet and a seed guardian, again in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Ditto, except he's now heavilt corrupted and enhanced by phazon. Should be noted that this is the definite end of the original Ridley.)
*** Sixth time, on Space Station Ceres, when he was kidnapping the baby metroid in Super Metroid. (First Ridley clone.)
*** Seventh time, on Zebes itself, wherein he served pretty much the same capacity as he had in Metroid/Zero Mission, also in Super Metroid. (When this clone was destroyed.)

Mostly...]] Point being, you have to rescue her (and a bunch of other trapped Breegulls) from the second level before you can use her powers. Even the manual says "She just wants to get back to her best friend and back to kicking Grunty's butt."

* In "Metroid: Other M", when Samus encounters Ridley, she becomes terrified and unable to fight back. Ridley easily grabs her, leaving one of her allies to begin the offensive in her stead. There are arguments over whether or not she had the distress ball at the time, since she had traumatic childhood memories regarding Ridley, but has also faced and defeated him numerous times in the past without an emotional breakdown.

Yeah, Sora\'s Chickification isn\'t as bad as others, but there\'s still plenty of it. Even you point out that she had to be rescued during the World Tour arc. So who\'s the FanDumb one here?

* Pictured above: Sora Takenouchi got hit upside the head with one of these during the Christmas episodes of Digimon 02, by panicking when debris started falling around her and having to be pulled away by Matt; the other characters (including Sora's Bond Creature) ran away. Chickification, FanDumb screamed. Even when Sora actually recovered and joined Miyako/Yolei in the World Tour arc, leading the Russian Digidestined. Unfortunately, that mission didn't go too well either; the girls nearly froze to death and had to be rescued there as well.

*Kyrie from the World Destruction anime picks this up every other episode. Despite the fact that he is a capable fighter in the game and he has the power to destroy the world, Kyrie never arms himself with anything and must rely on his friends Morte and Toppi to bail him out. He manages to subvert this slightly in the manga as the only reason he picked it up was because he froze in place. And despite the fact that he can fight in the video game, he still gets himself captured.
