* Most depictions of ''SonicTheHedgehog'' do this. Especially with Knuckles, who is almost never seen any ''other'' way.
** The first 3D Sonic games averted this by placing all the characters mouths dead center. Not surprisingly, it looked unnatural on Sonic characters, and SonicUnleashed actually has Sonic's mouth move to whichever side is facing the camera.
*** They've been doing that since ''Sonic Adventure 2'', although in later games they forgot that it's an awful idea when the camera is dead in front of the character, or when it rotates around the character's head, in which case the mouth awkwardly slides across the face from one cheek to the other.
**** This gets really ridiculous with the "Night of The Werehog" animated short they did. Sonic walks past a mirror, mouth facing camera, but on the mirror, he looks as if he has no mouth at all!

* Most depictions of ''SonicTheHedgehog'' do this. Especially is usually depicted with Knuckles, a side-mouth, along with much of his supporting cast such as Knuckles who is almost never seen any ''other'' way.
** The first 3D Sonic games averted this by placing all the
way. However, most characters in ''SonicAdventure'' and [[SonicAdventure2 its sequel]] were modeled with their mouths dead center. Not surprisingly, it dead-center in the front of their faces, which looked unnatural on Sonic characters, and SonicUnleashed actually has awkward enough that [[SonicUnleashed subsequent games]] made it a deliberate art design choice that Sonic's mouth move to whichever side is facing should always be at the camera.
*** They've been doing that since ''Sonic Adventure 2'', although in later games they forgot that it's an awful idea
side. This also introduced other awkward situations, such as when the camera is dead in front of the character, or when it rotates around the character's head, in which case the mouth awkwardly slides across the face from one cheek to the other.

** As a great example of ShownTheirWork, Classic Sonic in SonicGenerations will have the exact same kind of cheek mouth he had since the first game. Modern Sonic will keep the same cheek mouth he had in SonicUnleashed's HD daytime stages.

This is understandable for animation, as it's a budget saver and makes production go faster. This trope becomes a problem when it spreads to other media, however, specifically comics. Despite the fact this trick is really necessary only in a moving picture medium, a fair number of amateur artists do this, either due to inexperience or [[LazyArtist laziness]] with drawing profiles properly. This tends to be automatically associated with poor artists who are learning by imitating television rather than actual artwork, although that can be [[HandsInPockets hidden badly by simply always doing 3/4 points of view]].

*** Correction, Day-time Sonic had no mouth. Werehog had one, though it only opened when he, A), lands from nowhere, and lets out a howl at the beginning of the stage, or B), activates Unleashed mode, and acts like he's howling. In the 360-version, he does howl when Unleashed is activated.
