He muses that if he'd lived in a quieter time period, such as the [[Literature/SherlockHolmes Victorian era]], with fewer demands on his attention then he might not have needed to use drugs.[[note]] The original Sherlock Holmes used drugs such as cocaine and opium, along with tobacco, as heavily as was commonplace for a gentleman of the age. The "snuff" of the era was highly likely to contain cocaine (admittedly, not as potent as today's crack cocaine), although it didn't always. Opium was in widespread use for both medicine and recreation, with one use frequently causing the other one. The original Watson certainly used opium in an increasingly non-medical way (although it was originally prescribed for his war injury): and shared it with Sherlock. The only difference between then and now is that in the Victorian Era these drugs weren't illegal and there was no violent street trade in them.[[/note]]
