Modern beliefs in equality between the sexes make the good old RescueRomance trope somewhat difficult to play straight. However, there's a question in the air... what if "that male" is either ''hired or honor-bound'' to protect "that female"? That wouldn't be chauvinist at all -- not only is the guy getting rewarded or paid (whether in money, benefits, rank raises, fame/reputation etc.) by his bosses or upperclassmen for taking care of the girl's safety, but it fulfills residual KnightInShiningArmor imagery without causing eyebrow-raising among the fandom.

* In ''ComicBook/YTheLastMan'' Agent 355 is attracted to both Allison Mann and Yorick, the two people she's charged with bodyguarding. [[spoiler:For much of the series 355 assumes her feelings for Yorick are simply a desire to protect him, until Allison points out that's actually why 355 slept with ''her,'' and that she's always realised that 355 was in love with Yorick.]]

* In ''Fanfic/CodeGeassThePreparedRebellion'', Sayoko serves as Lelouch's NinjaMaid, and has feelings for him. After C.C. informs him, he starts to reciprocate, and she eventually becomes one of his lovers.

* In ''Fanfic/WaitingIsWorthIt'', Toshinori/[[spoiler:All Might]] volunteered to act as protection for the Midoriya family when villains started targeting Izuku for his powerful quirk. Overtime he and Izuku's mother Inko began dating where they would eventually marry.

* ''Film/SomeoneToWatchOverMe'' features Creator/TomBerenger as a policeman assigned to guard witness Creator/MimiRogers. Of course he ends up falling for her, despite already being married.

* ''Film/ThePrincessDiaries'', surprisingly, has this trope. The Queen falls in love with the guy who is introduced as the chauffer, but nearer to the end of the movie, and especially in the sequel, it's obvious that he's also a bodyguard. In fact, it's implied by certain comments in the sequel that the two have had UnresolvedSexualTension long before the first movie.
* Mathilda has one of these on Léon in ''Film/TheProfessional''--in the uncut version, she even asks him to be her first lover, but he refuses.

* ''Film/BodyguardFromBeijing'' starring Creator/JetLi has this happen between the protagonist, the titular soldier from China, and his charge, a UsefulNotes/HongKong lady. The latter was the one who made the first moves, but the former tried to be professional distanced himself from her. He DidNotGetTheGirl, as he was shown going back to China ([[{{Anvilicious}} posing right in front of the Chinese flag]]) while the lady stays behind. It's pretty obvious her feelings were reciprocated, however.

* ''Film/SuicideSquad2016''. An InvokedTrope by [[ManipulativeBitch Amanda Waller]]. In order to gain leverage over Colonel Flagg, she assigned him to guard and watch Doctor Moone (who is posessed by Enchantress), and inevitably they fall for each other. Flagg then has to do what Waller wants -- he could leave at any time, but that would mean leaving his girlfriend in the clutches of a woman he knows to be totally ruthless (that's Waller, not Enchantress).

** Violetta [[http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20080926 makes it clear]] she would kill Tarvek [[InvertedTrope as soon as his life is no longer her responsibility.]] Hilariously, von Zinzer points out that they are fighting LikeAnOldMarriedCouple. Note that she is actually his cousin, and a ShipperOnDeck for Tarvek/agatha.

Complicating matters are her necessary roles towards him as GoodShepherd and TheChampion, as well as the fact that Lion-O's [[SiblingTriangle older brother]] Tygra is ''also'' HotForPreacher. [[spoiler: In the end... Lion-O DidNotGetTheGirl, because Cheetara's romantic affections ''always'' were with Tygra.]]

* Technically Kaz's and Noni's relationship in ''Film/BeyondTheLights'' begins as this as he was assigned as her bodyguard on the night they meet. However, he was only filling in for another cop and his main job is as an officer of the LAPD.

* Sabastian, in ''Literature/TheGraystoneSaga'', spends his time BodyguardingABadass with whom he's been in love for the last two decades. He mixes this up with HopelessSuitor, which might explain why he's perpetually in a bad mood.

The trope is played much more straight with Sapphire and Ruby - before they rebelled, Ruby was one of Sapphire's bodyguards, and was clearly attracted to her.

* ''WesternAnimation/SupermanTheAnimatedSeries''. Mercy Grave shows UndyingLoyalty to the man who [[RecruitedFromTheGutter rescued her from the gutter]] to become his personal chauffeur/bodyguard. When Lex Luthor abandons her to save himself in "Ghost in the Machine", she's devastated to realise he thinks of her as just another expendable minion. ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeagueUnlimited'' drops a strong hint that they were lovers, and Lex Luthor doesn't hesitate to play on these feelings so Mercy will continue to help him despite her disillusionment with her BadBoss.

Sweet deal... or is it? This often conflicts with [[HonorBeforeReason the protector's sense of professionalism]], especially if they're a BattleButler or a NinjaMaid. What happens if the bodyguard and the liege's [[WomanScorned relationship goes bad]]? What if the conflicts distract the protector or if plans and orders coming from the bosses change...?

** Suzaku develops feelings for Lelouch, whom he serves as a personal bodyguard. Which heavily complicates things for Suzaku, as he's a [[PeggySue Time Traveler]] trying to preserve history. Which he has to do by making sure that Lelouch dies. It doesn't help that Lelouch returns his feelings and promotes him to make him a socially acceptable suitor.

* In the second season of the ''Manga/BlackButler'' anime, Claude towards Alois. His catchphrase can be interpreted roughly as "I want nothing but to deeply desire my master." Cue fangirl squee. Aforementioned prostitute is actually [[ActionGirl Makie Otono-Tachibana]], who later becomes [[BigBad Kagehisa Anotsu's]] [[TheDragon dragon]] and [[BodyguardBabes bodyguard]] after having come to terms with the fact that he will never love her as a person, but [[InLoveWithYourCarnage only as a weapon]]. [[spoiler: Eventually he actually does warm up to her and starts to genuinely care for her... Shortly after that it's revealed [[TooPowerfulToLive that Makie has]] [[IncurableCoughOfDeath tubercolosis.]] It would seem the universe, for some unfathomable reason, simply doesn't want this woman to lead a happy life.]]

* ''Anime/BloodPlus'': All chiropteran chevaliar are hardwired to be this for their respective queen. That said, some love their queens much more than the others.
** Haji takes the cake for having loved and protected Saya since he was young and still human. Not only does Haji feel nothing but love and loyalty for his master Saya, he's at it for upwards of 100 years before she even notices.
** James lives only to make Diva happy and make others bow down to her. He is the only one of her chevalier to never express affection for Saya or attempt to use Diva to achieve his own ends. When Diva rejects a newly healed James, he goes full blown Yandere against the newest object to catch her eye.
* ''Anime/BrigadoonMarinAndMelan'',
** Melan initially protects Marin simply because it is his duty. As time goes on, the pair begin to have feelings for one another, though their personalities (Marin is warm and loving towards many people, and Melan is gentle and soft-spoken) make it a little hard to pinpoint exactly ''when'' they start seeing each other in this light. In any case, the result is that Melan grows to love Marin so much that he continues to protect her even when [[spoiler: it turns out she's not the person he was supposed to protect in the first place.]]
** Shortly after meeting for the first time [[GenerationXerox Kitano's parents]] try to pull this too. Turns out Kitano's dad [[TheJuggernaut does not really need the help]].
* ''Manga/{{Chobits}}'': This seems to happen between the female guard/firewall Dita and the male charge/database Zima at the end of the anime. Seemingly caused by Chii [[spoiler: granting all persocoms the ability to feel emotions]]. In the manga their relationship is a bit more defined. The only reason Dyta is not cuddling up with Zima is because persocoms cannot really feel emotions, so [[ItMakesSenseInCOntext they cannot love each other even if they're in love]].

* In ''Manga/CityHunter'', Ryo took many bodyguard jobs. Most of the times, his charge fell in love with him.

** [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender-flipped]] with Kallen and Lelouch. where AcePilot and ActionGirl Kallen Kouzuki develops a crush on rebel leader Zero (who eventually does make her his bodyguard). [[spoiler:The second season plays with this as, now knowing Zero's real identity as her classmate Lelouch Lamperouge, Kallen has a hard time reconciling her feelings for him with the RichIdiotWithNoDayJob image he's projected at school. The twist? Had Lelouch let Kallen in on ThePlan, she not only would have turned against the Black Knights and the rest of the world for him (as well as abandoned a HappilyEverAfter ending with her mother), but she would have also followed him in death.]] This in turn makes the ending even more bittersweet, especially during ''The Miraculous Birthday'' in which [[spoiler:Kallen states she'll never forget (i.e. stop loving) Lelouch, even if she wanted to.]]

** The only bodyguard who does ''not'' have a crush on his charge is Knight of One Bismark for Emperor Charles, and [[VillainousFriendship even they are pretty chummy]].
* In ''Anime/CorrectorYui'', it's ''very'' strongly implied that [[spoiler: sometimes before returning to his original identity, War Wolf aka Corrector Synchro began to fall in love with Yui. It was that one of the triggers that made him eventually return to his former self. Later, when forcibly turned back into Wolf thanks to a certain Virus, he proves to be loyal to her and even if she still bothers him with an AffectionateNickname, he can't be mad at her just because of that.]]
* ''Manga/DanceInTheVampireBund'': 17 year old Akira Regendorf's feelings for [[VampireMonarch Princess Mina Tepes]] rapidly slides into this category. Mina [[SubordinateExcuse has already fallen hard for him]]... about seven years back.

* ''Dragon's Reign'' subverts this trope because the BigBad is revealed to be the princess, who has gone through a succession of Bodyguard Romances, each time convincing her new protector that the previous one was a villain who kept her imprisoned and took advantage of her. The hero even figures this out, but is still all but powerless against her MagnificentBastard charms.
* ''Anime/ElCazadorDeLaBruja'' Nadie is tasked with protecting Ellis, and ends up developing feelings for her, although it is [[spoiler:Ellis who takes the initiative]].
* ''LightNovel/TheFamiliarOfZero'' combines this trope with HappinessInSlavery in regards to Saito's relationship with Louise. As her familiar, he has incentive to protect her. [[spoiler: Eventually, he becomes her husband.]]

** [[GenderInvertedTrope Genders are inverted]] where the female Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye acts as aide/right-hand woman/bodyguard to male Colonel Roy Mustang. It becomes progressively clearer throughout the manga and ''Brotherhood'' anime that their feelings for each other run much deeper than allowable by the military's anti-fraternization law (a fact that the bad guys gleefully exploit twice); it's eventually revealed that their relationship goes back to a long time before either of them joined the military [[spoiler: since her dad was his Alchemy teacher]]. It's not an exaggeration to say that the most dangerous place in Amestris is between the two of them. Nonetheless, he means well. ''Nothing'' on Earth had better threaten Chidori, be it a gang of {{Delinquents}}, a PsychoForHire, or a majorly armed nation, ''[[{{Determinator}} for he will take it down]]''.

There's even an odd twist on it in the second episode, where Relena protects Heero in spite of the fact that he was about to shoot her; this might even mark the point where he starts feeling something for her. Making it odder still, the attacker is fellow Gundam Pilot Duo Maxwell, who shot Heero to save Relena and is greatly confused when she chews him out and bandages the guy who was about to shoot her: "Man, when did I become the bad guy in all this?"
** In ''Anime/TurnAGundam'', [[spoiler: Harry Ord]] feels like this towards [[spoiler: Kihel Heim, Queen Diana's BodyDouble]], and they even get to share a BigDamnKiss. [[spoiler: At the end, Kihel and Diana switch places for real and while Diana stays on Earth to live a simple and peaceful life with Loran, [[TheHighQueen Kihel gets to reign over the Moon]] [[LadyAndKnight and keeps Harry as]] [[RulingCouple her right-hand man and her lover]].]]
** In ''Anime/AfterWarGundamX'', after a rather rocky beginning, [[KidHero Garrod Ran]] becomes [[FaintingSeer Tiffa Addil's]] devoted protector. He's soon crushing quite a bit on her and, despite being [[FragileFlower terrified of people]] due to her past, she places her trust on him and loves him back just as much. It even gets lampshaded by Tiffa's ParentalSubstitute/Garrod's mentor Jamil, who once "punishes" Garrod by telling him he shall stay by her side.

** All of the girls qualify to one or another extreme. They're brainwashed to have no other thought than their handler's safety, and this always manifests in some sort of love, often obsessive.
** It's played straight when Hilshire and his cyborg Triela are assigned to protect [[CrusadingLawyer prosecutor]] Roberta Guellfi. After the assignment is over, Hilshire starts a relationship with Roberta (while Triela [[IWantMyBelovedtoBeHappy decides not to tell him about *her* feelings]])

Then, Nimashet was given a ''direct order'' by her superior officer to ''reinstate'' the relationship and become the eventual Empress Nimashet. Even though they know it's a bad idea to fraternize inside the chain of command, they need her to steady Roger because he'd either abdicate to be with her again or else try to rule the Empire alone and end up as Emperor Roger the Mad. (Nimashet is pretty much the only person around who can hold Roger back from massacre once his BerserkButton is pushed, and Roger on some level ''knows'' this.)

* In Moira Moore's ''Heroes'' series there are two kinds of magic users, Sources and Shields, who get permanently paired up. The Source deflects natural disasters while the Shield protects the Source from some kind of backlash that occurs. First person narrator and Shield Dunleavy really likes her Source Shintaro and protects him not only while working magic but tends to protectiveness also in more mundane situations. He in turn makes no attempt to hide that he lusts after her.
* ''Literature/TheRifter'': Kyle (the Kahlil) is assigned to secretly watch and guard John when John is a child. He does so for ten years, and as John grows up Kyle becomes immensely attached to him, though he won’t allow himself to think that he might be falling in love because he knows he might receive the order to kill John. By the end of the book, Kyle knows for certain that guarding and loving John (the Rifter) are his two purposes in life. It’s both a confirmation and a radical revision of the relationship that the holy scriptures indicate between the Kahlil and the Rifter.

He takes this trope to the furthest, being exiled by his beloved twice and threatened with death, he takes extreme measurements to return to her and beg to become her bodyguard again.

** In the first two seasons Sandor Clegane served as Joffrey's bodyguard and his duties contained guarding also Joffrey's betrothed Sansa, for whom Sandor seemed to have some mixed feelings.
* In ''Series/{{Heroes}}'', this APPEARED to be the case for Peter and Claire. This was squashed immediately upon the reveal that they're actually each others long lost uncle and niece. Of course this didn't actually stop the shipping or the sexual tension between them. The fact that the actors portraying the two got involved surely contributed to the shipping and tension. Hayden's young age (relatively) added some risque' spice, as well.
* In ''Series/{{Charmed}}'', the PowersThatBe mandate a strict law against Whitelighters falling in love with their wiccan charges. But naturally, this was dealt with [[SecondHandStorytelling offscreen]] and waived in the case of Piper (main character), who married Leo and later on in the series even got to have a child. Even with Piper's mom and Sam, another whitelighter, having an affair and ended up with Paige.
