Modern beliefs in equality between the sexes make the good old RescueRomance trope somewhat difficult to play straight. However, there's a question in the air... what if "that male" is either ''hired or honor-bound'' to protect "that female"? That wouldn't be chauvinist at all -- not only is the guy getting rewarded or paid (whether in money, benefits, rank raises, fame/reputation etc.) by his bosses or upperclassmen for taking care of the girl's safety, but it fulfills residual KnightInShiningArmor imagery without causing eyebrow-raising among the fandom.

The Queen falls in love with the guy who is introduced as the chauffer, but nearer to the end of the movie, and especially in the sequel, it's obvious that he's also a bodyguard. * In ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'', Pearl clearly saw Rose Quartz as her "liege" and made it her purpose in life to follow and protect her. * ''Anime/AldnoahZero'': Slaine Troyard's thoughts on Princess Asseylum are all but stated to be this, specially since [[IOweYouMyLife she saved his life]] and then his father's years ago and therefore he has developed one heck of an UndyingLoyalty towards her. On the other hand, in the second season it looks like [[spoiler: Asseylum's BodyDouble and half-sister Lemrina is developing one on ''him'', which is further confirmed when she first kisses him on the lips, and in a later episode (under the disguise of Asseylum) declares that they are to be engaged to marry.]]
* While more of personal medics than bodyguards, all the significant Unemezoku in ''Manga/ArataKangatari'' (Kotoha, Rami, and Miyabi) seem to be devoted to their masters (Arata, Mikusa, and Kadowaki, respectively) more than the call of duty requires.
* ''Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia'': [[NinjaMaid Hungary]] towards [[{{Meganekko}} Austria]]. She worked as his maid and later as his advisor before they got married, yet she also was quite happy to try get [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything "his vital regions"]] back, [[BladeOnAStick spear]] in hand and supported by her legions...
--> '''Austria''': ''Miss Hungary? Why are you here?''
--> '''Hungary''': ''I have 100.000 soldiers! I'll fight alongside you! :D''
* [[TheAtoner Kakihito]] [[spoiler:the Hiiragi]] from the manga ''Manga/{{Basara}}'' cares a lot about Ginko.
* ''Manga/{{Basilisk}}'' has two characters behaving like this: Chikuma Koushirou for the Iga Tsubagakure, Kagerou for the Kouga Manjidani. Both of them have feelings for their leaders, Princess Iga-no-Oboro and Koga Gennosuke respectively.
* In the second season of the ''Manga/BlackButler'' anime, Claude towards Alois. His catchphrase can be interpreted roughly as "I want nothing but to deeply desire my master." Cue fangirl squee. [[spoiler: It's subverted when Claude cruelly kills Alois himself, giving the psychotic kiddo an AlasPoorVillain demise.]]
* ''Manga/BlackLagoon'':
** [[{{Yakuza}} Ginji Matsuzaki]]'s loyalties are all for [[YakuzaPrincess Yukio Washimine]], and it's almost a sure thing that they're romantically-inspired. From Yukio's part, Rock tells her that he's sure she accepted the role of Yakuza boss to be with Ginji, who could never have a normal life with her. [[spoiler: It ends tragically, however: with the Washimine clan decimated, Ginji slain by Revy, and Yukio commiting ''[[{{seppuku}} jigai]]'' with his katana [[TogetherInDeath right after his death]].]]
*** In that same arc, one can also make the argument that Revy applies to this for Rock since this is one of the parts where the ShipTease between them is at its most visible.
** By the time the ''Baile de la Muerte'' arc finishes, [[spoiler: Garcia has developed a HUGE one on his much older NinjaMaid Roberta. In the manga, he even kisses her.]]
* ''Manga/BladeOfTheImmortal'': Rin Asano shows signs of interest in her immortal bodyguard almost right away; [[GreenEyedMonster showing jealousy of his interest in a prostitute]], [[LettingHerHairDown later directly asking if he finds her appealing]], [[LuminescentBlush turning red when she's suggested to be his lover]], and pretty much [[AlwaysSaveTheGirl willfully sacrificing the lives of strangers]] to save him. Later in the manga, she even kisses him while he sleeps, and apparently does so again offscreen, after they've been reunited after a looooooong separation. Even later, Rin flat out offers her body to Manji, so the "crush" at this point has become a full-blown declaration of love. In the same scene, Manji, who originally said that he [[LikeBrotherAndSister thought Rin looked too much like his sister]] says that he's mostly forgotten what the latter looked like, and that his feelings for Rin have become something different, finally playing this trope straight. Aforementioned prostitute is actually [[ActionGirl Makie Otono-Tachibana]], who later becomes [[BigBad Kagehisa Anotsu's]] [[TheDragon dragon]] and [[BodyguardBabes bodyguard]] after having come to terms with the fact that he will never love her as a person, but [[InLoveWithYourCarnage only as a weapon]]. [[spoiler: Eventually he actually does warm up to her and starts to genuinely care for her... Shortly after that it's revealed [[TooPowerfulToLive that Makie has]] [[IncurableCoughOfDeath tubercolosis.]] It would seem the universe, for some unfathomable reason, simply doesn't want this woman to lead a happy life.]]
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}''
** Soi Fong developed this towards her former commander [[FallenPrincess Shihoin Yoruichi]] after entering the omnitsukido. She worships Yoruichi as a goddess.
** From the time they were very small children, Kanae Katagiri was a [[UndyingLoyalty devoted]] servant and bodyguard to Uryuu's father, Ryuuken. [[spoiler:Her feelings weren't one-sided; she's Uryuu's mother.]]
* ''Anime/BloodPlus'': All chiropteran chevaliar are hardwired to be this for their respective queen. That said, some love their queens much more than the others.
** Haji takes the cake for having loved and protected Saya since he was young and still human. Not only does Haji feel nothing but love and loyalty for his master Saya, he's at it for upwards of 100 years before she even notices.
** James lives only to make Diva happy and make others bow down to her. He is the only one of her chevalier to never express affection for Saya or attempt to use Diva to achieve his own ends. When Diva rejects a newly healed James, he goes full blown Yandere against the newest object to catch her eye.
* ''Anime/BrigadoonMarinAndMelan'',
** Melan initially protects Marin simply because it is his duty. As time goes on, the pair begin to have feelings for one another, though their personalities (Marin is warm and loving towards many people, and Melan is gentle and soft-spoken) make it a little hard to pinpoint exactly ''when'' they start seeing each other in this light. In any case, the result is that Melan grows to love Marin so much that he continues to protect her even when [[spoiler: it turns out she's not the person he was supposed to protect in the first place.]]
** Shortly after meeting for the first time [[GenerationXerox Kitano's parents]] try to pull this too. Turns out Kitano's dad [[TheJuggernaut does not really need the help]].
* ''Manga/{{Chobits}}'': This seems to happen between the female guard/firewall Dita and the male charge/database Zima at the end of the anime. Seemingly caused by Chii [[spoiler: granting all persocoms the ability to feel emotions]]. In the manga their relationship is a bit more defined. The only reason Dyta is not cuddling up with Zima is because persocoms cannot really feel emotions, so [[ItMakesSenseInCOntext they cannot love each other even if they're in love]].
* ''Manga/ChronoCrusade'':
** Chrono harbors an obvious Bodyguard Crush on his [[DealWithTheDevil contractor]] Rosette, to the point that he's mostly unwilling to let her unseal his ShapeshifterModeLock because of [[PowerDegeneration what it does to her]]. [[UnstoppableRage God forbid that you ever injure her...]]
** There's hints that [[NinjaMaid Fiore]] has strong feelings for her ward, Joshua, particularly in the manga.
* In ''Manga/CityHunter'', Ryo took many bodyguard jobs. Most of the times, his charge fell in love with him.
* ''Anime/CodeGeass'' has many many of these:
** [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender-flipped]] with Kallen and Lelouch. where AcePilot and ActionGirl Kallen Kouzuki develops a crush on rebel leader Zero (who eventually does make her his bodyguard). [[spoiler:The second season plays with this as, now knowing Zero's real identity as her classmate Lelouch Lamperouge, Kallen has a hard time reconciling her feelings for him with the RichIdiotWithNoDayJob image he's projected at school. The twist? Had Lelouch let Kallen in on ThePlan, she not only would have turned against the Black Knights and the rest of the world for him (as well as abandoned a HappilyEverAfter ending with her mother), but she would have also followed him in death.]] This in turn makes the ending even more bittersweet, especially during ''The Miraculous Birthday'' in which [[spoiler:Kallen states she'll never forget (i.e. stop loving) Lelouch, even if she wanted to.]]
*** Ironically, during that same season, Lelouch's own feelings for Kallen evolve to the point where he sees himself as HER protector. This leads him to... [[spoiler: [[HonorBeforeReason abandon a mission]] that he himself says is the key to challenging TheEmpire, and to [[AlwaysSaveTheGirl place his entire army in peril by attempting to rescue her]]; [[ItsNotYouItsMyEnemies to push her away from the line of fire when she says she is willing to die with him after he is betrayed by the Black Knights]], and [[IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy excluding her from his final plan altogether in order to spare her the price she would have paid for taking part in it]].]]
** [[GenerationXerox Lelouch's parents were the same way]]; his mother [[TheMagnificent Marianne the Flash]] was the former Knight of Two for his father, Emperor Charles.
** A classic case with Lelouch's half-sister [[RebelliousPrincess Princess Euphemia Ii Britannia]] and her [[KnightinShiningArmor Knight Suzaku Kururugi.]] At their first meeting, she ''pretended'' to be in danger so they could have a RescueRomance. Later she names him her offficial knight (in part) because she has a crush on him.
** Li Xingke acted as a servant for Empress Tianzi. His crush is strong enough that [[spoiler:Shirley persuaded Lelouch it would be criminal to separate them.]] [[spoiler: He might be the "reason" why she can't marry. It's better him then the guy she was going to marry who was 40.]]
** Sir Gilbert Guilford and Princess Cornelia have a lot of subtext that points toward this. In fact, Guilford is such a Cornelia fanboy that he has a Cornelia collector's plate.
** Kanon is Schneizel's aide de camp "public and private". Why else would Schneizel have a ''[[TheBeard lesbian]]'' [[TheBeard on his arm for ceremonies]]?
** The only bodyguard who does ''not'' have a crush on his charge is Knight of One Bismark for Emperor Charles, and [[VillainousFriendship even they are pretty chummy]].
* In ''Anime/CorrectorYui'', it's ''very'' strongly implied that [[spoiler: sometimes before returning to his original identity, War Wolf aka Corrector Synchro began to fall in love with Yui. It was that one of the triggers that made him eventually return to his former self. Later, when forcibly turned back into Wolf thanks to a certain Virus, he proves to be loyal to her and even if she still bothers him with an AffectionateNickname, he can't be mad at her just because of that.]]
* ''Manga/DanceInTheVampireBund'': 17 year old Akira Regendorf's feelings for [[VampireMonarch Princess Mina Tepes]] rapidly slides into this category. Mina [[SubordinateExcuse has already fallen hard for him]]... about seven years back.
* ''Anime/DemashitaPowerpuffGirlsZ'' had an episode where an actor from a superhero TV show ended up as the mayor of the city for the day. The Powerpuff Girls were assigned to be his bodyguards, with one of them quite infatuated with him.
* ''Dragon's Reign'' subverts this trope because the BigBad is revealed to be the princess, who has gone through a succession of Bodyguard Romances, each time convincing her new protector that the previous one was a villain who kept her imprisoned and took advantage of her. The hero even figures this out, but is still all but powerless against her MagnificentBastard charms.
* ''Anime/ElCazadorDeLaBruja'' Nadie is tasked with protecting Ellis, and ends up developing feelings for her, although it is [[spoiler:Ellis who takes the initiative]].
* ''LightNovel/TheFamiliarOfZero'' combines this trope with HappinessInSlavery in regards to Saito's relationship with Louise. As her familiar, he has incentive to protect her. [[spoiler: Eventually, he becomes her husband.]]
* ''Manga/FullmetalAlchemist'':
** [[GenderInvertedTrope Genders are inverted]] where the female Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye acts as aide/right-hand woman/bodyguard to male Colonel Roy Mustang. It becomes progressively clearer throughout the manga and ''Brotherhood'' anime that their feelings for each other run much deeper than allowable by the military's anti-fraternization law (a fact that the bad guys gleefully exploit twice); it's eventually revealed that their relationship goes back to a long time before either of them joined the military [[spoiler: since her dad was his Alchemy teacher]]. It's not an exaggeration to say that the most dangerous place in Amestris is between the two of them. [[spoiler: Apparently, WordOfGod states that they have "marriage-worthy" mutual feelings but, as said above, the anti-fraternization rules will technically keep them apart for some time.]]
** Lan Fan, the female bodyguard of Prince Ling Yao of Xing, has a very similar relationship with her lord. To the extent that [[AntiVillain Greed]] becomes a ShipperOnDeck.
* ''LightNovel/FullMetalPanic'': Sousuke Sagara is the militarily placed protector of modern schoolgirl [[{{Tsundere}} Kaname Chidori]]. Raised by the KGB, he has NoSocialSkills. Nonetheless, he means well. ''Nothing'' on Earth had better threaten Chidori, be it a gang of {{Delinquents}}, a PsychoForHire, or a majorly armed nation, ''[[{{Determinator}} for he will take it down]]''.
* ''Manga/FushigiYuugi'':
** At least one Seishi will fall in love with the Miko in the verse. Rarely is it not reciprocated...
** [[StarCrossedLovers Rarely can it be consummated]]. Damn YourUniverseOrMine and VirginPower. [[spoiler: Poor, poor Suzuno/Byakko no Miko and Tatara, who had to wait for ''decades'' (and apparently ''centuries'', in Tatara's case) to be TogetherInDeath.]]
* ''Manga/FutureDiary'': Yukiteru uses his {{Yandere}} StalkerWithACrush Yuno as a bodyguard in the Survival Game. Yuno is simply happy with being used in any way by her dear "Yukki".
%%* In Emura's manga ''Grand Sun'', Asahi becomes Kisaragi Sakuya's bodyguard.
* ''Franchise/{{Gundam}}'':
** ''Anime/MobileFighterGGundam'' has RebelliousPrincess Maria Louise and her crush on the local PrincelyYoungMan, George [=DeSand=]. She crushes furiously on him, and while he doesn't necessarily encourage her feelings, he does consider her as an inspiration and borderline lady-in-liege.
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamSEEDDestiny'': A foregone conclusion with Athrun and Cagalli in the first part as they were both interested in each other well before he became her bodyguard. Many cute moments ensue, as he became her bodyguard ''because'' of the fact that they were interested in one another. [[spoiler: However, they break-up midway through the series since [[MarriedToTheJob Cagalli's]] ultimate priorities are rebuilding the kingdom of Orb ''and'' helping stop the war. Not every hope is lost, however, since both are more or less single at the GrandFinale (though Athrun has Meyrin, who Cagalli personally asked to keep an eye on him, as another possible suitor).]]
** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing'' has a [[GenderInvertedTrope Genderflipped]] example: RebelliousPrincess Relena, the one being protected, ''is'' obviously in love with her bodyguard of sorts Heero Yuy. He shows only a couple of outward signs that he reciprocates, but it's very subtle. There's even an odd twist on it in the second episode, where Relena protects Heero in spite of the fact that he was about to shoot her; this might even mark the point where he starts feeling something for her. Making it odder still, the attacker is fellow Gundam Pilot Duo Maxwell, who shot Heero to save Relena and is greatly confused when she chews him out and bandages the guy who was about to shoot her: "Man, when did I become the bad guy in all this?"
** In ''Anime/TurnAGundam'', [[spoiler: Harry Ord]] feels like this towards [[spoiler: Kihel Heim, Queen Diana's BodyDouble]], and they even get to share a BigDamnKiss. [[spoiler: At the end, Kihel and Diana switch places for real and while Diana stays on Earth to live a simple and peaceful life with Loran, [[TheHighQueen Kihel gets to reign over the Moon]] [[LadyAndKnight and keeps Harry as]] [[RulingCouple her right-hand man and her lover]].]]
** In ''Anime/AfterWarGundamX'', after a rather rocky beginning, [[KidHero Garrod Ran]] becomes [[FaintingSeer Tiffa Addil's]] devoted protector. He's soon crushing quite a bit on her and, despite being [[FragileFlower terrified of people]] due to her past, she places her trust on him and loves him back just as much. It even gets lampshaded by Tiffa's ParentalSubstitute/Garrod's mentor Jamil, who once "punishes" Garrod by telling him he shall stay by her side.
* ''Manga/GunslingerGirl'':
** All of the girls qualify to one or another extreme. They're brainwashed to have no other thought than their handler's safety, and this always manifests in some sort of love, often obsessive.
** It's played straight when Hilshire and his cyborg Triela are assigned to protect [[CrusadingLawyer prosecutor]] Roberta Guellfi. After the assignment is over, Hilshire starts a relationship with Roberta (while Triela [[IWantMyBelovedtoBeHappy decides not to tell him about *her* feelings]])
* In ''Manga/HajimeNoIppo'', [[spoiler: coach Kamogawa]] had a female friend named Yuki, [[spoiler: whom he and their common friend Nekota protected from the advances of stationed American soldiers.]] Yuki was hinted to be in love with him, [[spoiler: but as a survivor of the nuclear bombings, she died of radiation poisoning some time later.]]
* ''[[LightNovel/HaruhiSuzumiya The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya]]'': Itsuki and Mikuru take these roles in the club's home-made movie. Mikuru's character is supposed to protect Itsuki's from Yuki, the antagonist. Given that ''Haruhi'' is directing this movie, it quickly goes pear shaped.
* ''Manga/HayateTheCombatButler'': The entire plot of this parody series is based on this trope. It's [[InvertedTrope inverted]] (the real crush is the one the girl has for the guard) and [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] (she thinks he has a crush on her, which is how she developed ''her'' crush in the first place) as many ways and as long as humanly possible.
* ''Manga/{{Hellsing}}'''s [[SociopathicHero Alucard]] is intensely devoted to his Master and Countess [[TheWomanWearingTheQueenlyMask Integra Hellsing]] to the point of any insult done towards her in his presence triggers a BerserkButton. He's referred as her lapdog and bodyguard a couple of times, so fits this role.
* In ''Hime-sama Goyojin'', Adron, a hired assassin sent to steal Himeko's crown, masquerades as her bodyguard in order to get closer to her and kill her. Things get complicated when Adron develops a crush on her, and everytime he tries to murder her, he freezes up completely.
* Played with in ''Manga/IkkiTousen Great Guardians'', where Kan'u has become a sort-of CovertPervert for Ryuubi. (To be fair, Kan'u already felt that way from quite a while [[spoiler: and her feelings are enhanced by a certain MacGuffin]]). Also, Koukin feels similarly towards Hakufu, [[KissingCousins his cousin]] (Funniest thing, Hakufu's mom Goei sorta ''encourages'' said crush). And yep, they sorta ''did'' bond in regards to their common feelings in ''Dragon Destiny''.
* ''Manga/InuXBokuSS'': Soushi makes it clear from the get-go how wonderful he thinks his mistress Ririchiyo is and that he'd willingly do anything for her. The reason he ''became'' Ririchiyo's bodyguard in the first place was because he'd fallen in love with her after she unwittingly saved him emotionally when she was a young child, and he wanted nothing more than to protect her and be as close to her as he possibly could. This desire is so strong it treads into [[StalkerWithACrush stalker]] territory.
* The dog Rino of ''Manga/{{Inumimi}}'' was taken in by Yuichiro's father before the events of the story. As an antisocial doberman, she served as the family security system for quite some time. It's implied throughout the series that after she became a [[PettingZooPeople Petting Zoo Person]] she started having feelings for him.
* A serious case of LesYay between Valmet and Koko from ''Manga/{{Jormungand}}''. While most of it originates from Valmet, Koko not only seems to not mind, she also returns the advances, though if nothing has happened yet (officially).
* ''Manga/KamisamaKiss'' has [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Tomoe]] develop this around Nanami. Not like he will admit it though...
* The whole premise of ''LightNovel/{{Katanagatari}}'' is that Togame wants her bodyguard and human sword Shichika to fall in love with her so that he will develop UndyingLoyalty for their quest. Shichika agrees, and the feeling eventually becomes mutual.
%%* ''Manga/KatekyoHitmanReborn'': Arguably, Gokudera to [[HoYay Tsuna]].
%%** Also, Gamma to Uni.
* Ayano's father in ''LightNovel/KazeNoStigma'' tries to [[InvokedTrope use this trope]] on Kazuma to quietly set him up with his daughter, but Kazuma is actually smart enough to realize, a great rarity in this media [[IdiotHero for a main character]].
* Played with in ''[[LightNovel/KureNai Kure-nai]]'', where 7-year-old Murasaki seems to develop a puppy-love crush on her hired bodyguard/protector, Shinkurou. The relationship develops into the affectionate sort one might expect between a little sister and a caring older brother, [[spoiler: quite unlike her [[BrotherSisterIncest REAL]] older brother...]].
* In the oneshot ''Kuroneko Guardian'' the protagonist falls for his bodyguard. In the ending he outright tells her he plans on making her fall in love with him, [[AmusingInjuries which backfires.]]
* Conrad Weller might feel something like this for his charge, the king Yuuri Shibuya, in ''LightNovel/KyoKaraMaoh''.
* ''Anime/LupinIIITheWomanCalledFujikoMine'': During [[Recap/LupinIIIS4E2 the second episode]], Jigen is ordered to protect Cicciolina by his boss, despite Jigen's attempts at refusal, because the boss wants his wife protected. Cicciolina develops a crush on Jigen, and manipulates him into awkward situations such as having sex in a casket.
* ''Anime/{{Madlax}}'' The titular heroine, Madlax, appears to have romantic feelings for her client, Vanessa. [[spoiler: Too bad Vanessa gets caught in Madlax's deals and is ultimately killed.]]
* ''Manga/MagicKnightRayearth'' gives us one truly [[TearJerker heartwretching]] example. [[spoiler: The high-ranked sorcerer Zagato is chosen as the bodyguard of Princess Emeraude, the Pillar of Cephiro, and he falls for her. It turns out she loves him back... but a Pillar isn't allowed to care for ''anything'' except for Cephiro's well-being, or the whole world ''will'' collapse. So Emeraude tries to get the Magic Knights [[ICannotSelfTerminate to kill her so she can be free]] and pass the torch to a new Pillar; Zagato will have ''nothing'' of it, though, and in despair he kidnaps Emeraude so the Knights can't kill her, becoming the BigBad that Hikaru, Umi and Fuu must beat...]]
* In ''Manga/MahouSenseiNegima'', Setsuna's duty is to protect Konoka, who is only too glad for the excuse to be with her [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend not-girlfriend all the time]]. To her embarrassment, EveryoneCanSeeIt.
* ''Anime/MaiOtome'':
** Shizuru Viola's feelings towards Natsuki Kruger definitely fall under this (she works as both her bodyguard and assistant, ''and'' they share living quarters on campus), though she tries not to let it interfere ''too'' much with her sense of professionalism. (And she's also kinda fond of [[ChivalrousPervert flirting with other girls, sometimes]].)
** Takumi and Akira are in the same sort of situation, where Takumi is the prince of Zipang and Akira is his bodyguard.
* ''Manga/MaidenRose'': Klaus von Wolfenstein has a relationship with Taki Reizen can be seen as this. Klaus often bows down to Taki, and has expressed his desire to serve him and protect the country with him.
* In ''LightNovel/MirageOfBlaze'', Naoe is madly in love with his lord and master, Kagetora. Kagetora shows no sign of reciprocating, and in fact has been known to use that to keep Naoe chained to his side. Of course, this situation is exasperated by the fact that they have been reincarnated into this situation for the past ''400 years''. It's no wonder Naoe is [[LoveMakesYouCrazy losing it]].
* ''Manga/{{Monster}}'':
** Martin initially dislikes Eva, who he is supposed to protect, but later develops feelings for her just before [[spoiler:she is about to be finished off. Martin then tells her to meet him at a train station, but he [[HeroicSacrifice doesn't make it]].]]
** Roberto seems to be far, far too attached [[HoYay to his boss Johan.]]
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}''
** In the main storyline, Chojuro's feelings for the [[ChristmasCake 5th Mizukage]] go beyond simple protectiveness.
** Naruto himself [[InvertedTrope inverts]] this and plays this straight:
*** Inverted - It has been hinted that various {{Filler}} characters Naruto was assigned to protect developed feelings for him.
*** Played Straight - In ''Anime/TheLastNarutoTheMovie'', after Hanabi Hyuga is abducted and her older sister Hinata barely escapes, a task force is gathered to retrieve Hanabi; Naruto is a part of said group ''and'' additionally is tasked with protecting Hinata in case Hanabi's kidnapper goes after her again. Hinata is already in love with him, and as they spend more time together, Naruto realizes he has more personal reasons to keep her safe. [[spoiler: They later become a BattleCouple, begin their romantic relationship, and get HappilyMarried]].
** In ''Anime/BorutoNarutoTheMovie'', Boruto [[spoiler: Uzumaki]] [[ShipTease is probably]] [[PuppyLove developing this]] towards Sarada [[spoiler: Uchiha]]. [[spoiler: Boruto voices his desire to support Sarada's dream of becoming Hokage and [[LadyAndKnight becoming her right-hand man.]] She blushes crimson as a result, confirming her crush on the guy. Earlier in the movie, Boruto blushed red too when Sarada's face was inches away from his own.]]
* In ''Manga/NurarihyonNoMago'' we have [[GenderInvertedTrope gender flipped]] example with [[SubordinateExcuse Tsurara]] the [[AnIcePerson Yuki-Onna]] who has protected [[TheHero Rikuo]] since his childhood... As the story unfolds it's pretty obvious that her feelings towards him are not only those of [[UndyingLoyalty loyalty]] for her master.
* ''Manga/OmamoriHimari'', seeing as Himari climbs into her Master/Charge's bed within 24 hours of starting to protect him, and hasn't stopped trying to get into his pants since.
* ''Manga/PandoraHearts'' has [[SilkHidingSteel Charlotte]] ([[OnlyKnownByTheirNickname Lottie]]) [[BadassFamily Baskerville]] for her master [[TheStoic Glen]], and [[BattleButler Gilbert]] seems to feel this way about [[GuileHero the main character,]] [[EvenTheGuysWantHim Oz]].
* Ash's Charizard in ''Anime/{{Pokemon}}'', as seen in the episode ''Great Bowls of Fire'', is this with Liza's Charizard Charla, the same Charizard who has easily [[CurbStompBattle thrashed him]] in their first meeting. But now he has wooed her and is [[http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/File:Valleyshipping.png now her bodyguard.]] It's explicitly stated their relationship is this.
* Diamond harbors feelings for Lady Berlitz/Platinum in ''Manga/PokemonAdventures''. He and Pearl were became her bodyguards when she became a trainer.
* ''Manga/SaintSeiya'':
** Seiya is honor-bound to protect Saori, who's the reincarnation of Athena. He quickly develops feelings for her, and she seems to like him back too, but their relationship barely evolves at all until the ''Tenkai-Hen'' movie.
** Out of the other Bronze Knights, Unicorn Jabu also has feelings for Saori, and in fact right as he's being defeated by Shun in the Tournament, he cannot stop thinking of her.
** The {{filler}} Asgard saga has Siegfried, the strongest of the Asgard warriors, who is all but stated to have fallen in love with the priestess/representative of Odin on Earth, Polaris Hilda.
** If the prequel ''Manga/SaintSeiyaTheLostCanvas'' counts, this is all but stated to be what Sagittarius Sisyphus actually feels for Sasha aka the Athena incarnation of the 18th century.
** In the also non-canon sort-of sequel to the Asgard Saga, ''Anime/SaintSeiyaSoulOfGold'', Leo Aiolia gets LOTS of ShipTease with Princess Hilda's LadyInWaiting Lyfia, whom he also protects from danger as Asgard is taken over by Andreas [[spoiler: and Loki]]. [[spoiler: Sadly, they become StarCrossedLovers.]]
* Inverted in ''Anime/SamuraiChamploo'', Fuu seemed to feel this way towards ''both'' her bodyguards Mugen and Jin.
* ''Manga/SamuraiDeeperKyo'' has a few (Saizo for Yukimura, and arguably Hishigi for Fubuki), but Kyo's for Yuya is absolutely ''legendary'' and a little bit scary at times.
* In ''Anime/SamuraiSeven'', Kirara is given to this, though the person turns out to be the least expected. Her sister falls for this trope as well. [[spoiler:It ends badly for both sisters--Kirara's crush is forever unrequited, and while Komachi's is ''possibly [[MayDecemberRomance requited]]'', the guy dies in the final episode.]]
* ''VideoGame/SengokuBasara'' gives us the HighlyVisibleNinja Kasuga, who was sent to assassinate Uesugi Kenshin but ended up defecting and becoming Kenshin's devoted scout and bodyguard instead. And boy, [[LuminescentBlush does]] [[FootPopping she]] [[LooksLikeSheIsEnjoyingIt love]] [[TheImmodestOrgasm him]]...
* The first season of ''LightNovel/ShakuganNoShana'' is driven by a gender-inverted version of this trope. Since Shana is possibly the biggest {{tsundere}} of all time, she doesn't admit it until the final episode and Yuji doesn't hear it, so the writers get to keep running with this trope well into season 2!
* This is the basis of ''Manga/ShinobiLife''. Kagetora is a ninja assigned to protect the princess of feudal Japan, and falls in love with her. Then he gets warped to the future by accident and ends up falling in love with the princess' descendant. HonorBeforeReason abounds.
* Inverted in ''LightNovel/{{Slayers}}'': during the NEXT season, [[spoiler: when Gourry is taken away from her]], Lina suddenly realizes she's fallen in love with her bodyguard and companion Gourry, much to her initial surprise and dismay. Gourry has feelings for her too, but he's a lot more comfortable with them than the volatile sorceress. In fact, Gourry is the one who makes the first move, [[spoiler: when he lectures Lina after she fakes her death without telling him. He first calls her "unsensitive", then asks if she knows what he's come to feel for her, which makes [[TsunDere Lina]] ''very'' flustered.]]
* In ''Manga/SnowWhiteWithTheRedHair'', [[spoiler: Obi]] begins to slowly develop one for [[spoiler: Shirayuki]] after being assigned to protect her.
* In ''Anime/SpeedGrapher'', Tatsumi Saiga comes to feel this way towards Kagura, the girl he decided to protect after [[IOweYouMyLife she saves him from a bloody and messy death]] through a KissOfLife.
* [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender-flipped version]] in ''Manga/SumomomoMomomo''. Sanae is the heir of the Nakajima family, which has traditionally functioned as the bodyguards of the Inuzuka family. She has a huge crush on Koushi, the heir of the Inuzuka family, who she will one day have to protect from the shadows, as tradition dictates.
* ''Sweet Ninja Girl Azuki'': The format is [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender flipped ]], with Azuki developing the crush on him even before she becomes his bodyguard. Also notable that the feeling is definitely not reciprocated.
* ''Manga/VampirePrincessMiyu'': Shinma BattleButler Larva towards his vampire mistress Miyu.
* Hak from ''Manga/YonaOfTheDawn'' is a classic example for Yona, though in his case the crush came ''before'' he was her bodyguard. Some of the dragons are shaping up to be this to her too.
* ''Anime/YuGiOh'': Anzu Mazaki and Yami Yugi from the first manga series - their initial meeting has him possessing Yugi in order to rescue her and disappearing just as quickly, leading to her developing a crush on him. He rescues her a second time in a later chapter, creating the impression on her that he was her protector. When she begins to realise that her crush is in fact a form of Yugi, she deliberately invokes the trope by putting herself in danger to bring him out. This dynamic fades later on, when he becomes his own person and gains a more equal standing as the friend and not just the vengeful protector of Yugi's companions.
* ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'': Juudai and Yubel have a variation on this, since she was transformed into a dragon in order to protect him, and he pledged his eternal love to her after that.

* in David Eddings's ''[[Literature/TheElenium Elenium]]'' series, it's very explicit between Sparhawk and Ehlana. In this case she's [[spoiler:his Queen, and with the exception of the backstory period during which he mentored her as a child, any power imbalance is weighed strongly towards her end.]]
* In Laurel K. Hamilton's [[Literature/MerryGentry Meredith Gentry]] series, the royal bodyguards pretty much also serve as sex slaves to Queen Andais, Princess Meredith, and Prince Cel.
* ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire''
** Sandor Clegane is Prince Joffrey's sworn shield, but is more often seen protecting Joffrey's betrothed, Sansa Stark, leading to a BeastAndBeauty pairing. Sansa's thoughts seem to be conflicted. She's frightened of Sandor, but he seems to spring to her mind every time sex or kissing is mentioned, and she canonically fabricates a memory of kissing him.
** Two members of Renly's Rainbow Guard have the hots for him: Brienne, a large and ugly ActionGirl, and Loras, his gay lover.
** Jorah Mormont is hopelessly in love with Daenerys Targaryen, whom he serves as part of her Queensguard. She's aware of the situation and repeatedly rebuffs him.
** Arys Oakheart, a member of the Kingsguard sent to Dorne with Princess Myrcella, falls in love with Arianne Martell despite his vows. [[spoiler: He needlessly dies defending her and their companions at the Greenblood after being forced to yield by the Dornish captain of the guards, Areo Hotah.]]
* ''Literature/PrinceRoger'' The 'March/Prince Roger' saga has the spoilt misunderstood brat, Prince Roger Ramius Sergei Alexander Chiang [=MacClintock=] (whew, [[OverlyLongName what a mouthful!]]) and his ActionGirl bodyguard, Nimashet Despreaux, agonize endlessly before finally hooking up in the second book, ''March to the Sea.'' This was complicated further by the part where ''after'' they finally decided to hook up, Roger went from third to first in the line of succession -- meaning that country-girl commoner Nimashet had just gone from 'going to be married to the most redundant junior prince' to 'prospective Empress'. The latter possibility terrified her enough that she immediately broke the relationship off cold -- which created some serious tension, given that she was ''still his bodyguard''. Then, Nimashet was given a ''direct order'' by her superior officer to ''reinstate'' the relationship and become the eventual Empress Nimashet. Even though they know it's a bad idea to fraternize inside the chain of command, they need her to steady Roger because he'd either abdicate to be with her again or else try to rule the Empire alone and end up as Emperor Roger the Mad. (Nimashet is pretty much the only person around who can hold Roger back from massacre once his BerserkButton is pushed, and Roger on some level ''knows'' this.)
* ''Literature/KushielsLegacy'': [[ChasteHero Joscelin]] denies himself any attraction, romantic or otherwise, to Phedre, saying that he can't both be her bodyguard (servant of Cassiel) and her lover, because it goes against his vows. Granted, in ''Kushiel's Dart'' he and Phedre, ah...[[UnusualEuphemism paid homage to Namaah]]. Later in the series, they develop a proper relationship as the Comtesse Phedre no Delaunay de Montreve and her consort (read: practically husband) Joscelin.
* ''Literature/TheFaerieQueene'': The Red Cross Knight and Princess Una in the first book; Red Cross is EasilyForgiven for abysmally failing the "bodyguard" part at first, abandoning his charge thanks to a NotWhatItLooksLike scenario courtesy of the MasterOfIllusion.
* In the second book of the ''[[Franchise/StarWarsExpandedUniverse Coruscant Nights]]'' trilogy, we find that Padme's eyepatched bodyguard Typho was in [[AllLoveIsUnrequited love]] with her, and at her funeral, having seen the autopsy, comes to the conclusion that she was killed by use of the Force. Anakin Skywalker was supposed to be bodyguarding her in Typho's absence. Thus he decided to track down Skywalker; later he assumes that Vader killed them both, so he has to kill Vader. [[ForegoneConclusion You can imagine how that went.]]
** In the Literature/JediAcademyTrilogy General Wedge Antilles is set to bodyguarding Qwi Xux, an ex-Imperial scientist who had worked on the Death Star, the [[ComicBook/DarkEmpire World Devastators]], and the Sun Crusher, cheerfully oblivious to what these projects would be used for. Yes, a general serving as bodyguard to a scientist. They fall for each other, and in ''I, Jedi'' this development dismays Corran, since he [[ShipperOnDeck ships his boss with one of his friends]] (Who Wedge did end up with in a later novel after breaking up with Qwi).
* In Moira Moore's ''Heroes'' series there are two kinds of magic users, Sources and Shields, who get permanently paired up. The Source deflects natural disasters while the Shield protects the Source from some kind of backlash that occurs. First person narrator and Shield Dunleavy really likes her Source Shintaro and protects him not only while working magic but tends to protectiveness also in more mundane situations. He in turn makes no attempt to hide that he lusts after her.
* ''Literature/TheRifter'': Kyle (the Kahlil) is assigned to secretly watch and guard John when John is a child. He does so for ten years, and as John grows up Kyle becomes immensely attached to him, though he won’t allow himself to think that he might be falling in love because he knows he might receive the order to kill John. By the end of the book, Kyle knows for certain that guarding and loving John (the Rifter) are his two purposes in life. It’s both a confirmation and a radical revision of the relationship that the holy scriptures indicate between the Kahlil and the Rifter.
* In the ''Literature/{{Spaceforce}}'' series, Prince Ragoth, youngest son of the Taysan Empress, has a personal entourage of three bodyguards from the exclusive Clan of the Imperial Shield. The most recently appointed is Maydith, who is young and pretty. Other characters suspect that the pair are in love, but because of the crippling restrictions of Taysan society, [[StarCrossedLovers it can never be]].
* In the ''Literature/GemmaDoyle'' trilogy apparently it was once pretty common for the Rakshana and the members of the Order they guarded to be lovers. Named examples include Gemma and Kartik (eventually), and Miss [=McCleethy=] and Hugo Fowlson. It may or may not be worth noting that neither pairing ends well, but then, what pairing in this series does?
* In the ''Literature/QuantumGravity'' series, [[ActionGirl Lila]] [[{{Cyborg}} Black]] has been hired to bodyguard/spy on [[ElvishPresley Zal]], and the first thing that happens when they meet is a love match Game, which pushes them together, along with Zal's general open flirting. [[spoiler:They marry.]]
* In the ''[[Literature/OneRoseTrilogy The Compass Rose]]'', magic-users in the military are assigned bodyguards. Kallista's bodyguard Torchay is madly in love with her. Kallista resists, but after being ordered into marriage, eventually requites Torchay's feelings.
* ''Literature/TheElfstonesOfShannara'': Invoked by Rone Leah in ''Wishsong'': he goes along to protect Brin specifically ''because'' he has a crush on her.
* ''Literature/TheGodlessWorldTrilogy'': It isn't obvious, but [[ActionGirl Anyara's]] bodyguard Coinach seems to be developing a bit of a crush on her, which she may well reciprocate (she looks straight at him when someone tells her she should marry in order to make herself happy).
* From the ''Literature/HonorHarrington'' series:
** Hugh Arai for Queen Berry in ''[[Literature/HonorHarrington Torch of Freedom.]]'' [[spoiler: He's luckier, because she reciprocates the feelings, fires him as her head of security, and drags him off to her bedroom.]] Possibly inverted, as [[spoiler:she fell for him even before he was assigned as her head of security]].
** Major Andrew [=LaFollet=], head of Honor's Grayson-assigned Steadholder security detail and her personal chief bodyguard, spends most of his life quietly, deeply, and unrequitedly in love with her, even refusing to marry or have children (all but unheard-of on Grayson) in his devotion to her. She's aware of his feelings and regrets hurting him by not reciprocating, but ''he'' doesn't seem to consider it a loss.
* Anne Rice's ''Angel Time'': Lucky the Fox and his boss, The Right Man have something going on, although it's implied that it doesn't involve sex.
* Ari II and her "azi" (essentially slave, though YMMV) bodyguard Florian in ''Literature/{{Cyteen}}''.
* In Andy [=McDermott's=] ''Nina Wilde'' series, the titular AdventurerArchaeologist and her ex-SAS bodyguard Eddie Chase slowly fell in love and married over the course of their adventures. The romance is subtle and only made in passing mentions since their main focus is trying not to die preserving rare artifacts.
* In the ''Literature/KrisLongknife'' series, there are some very strong hints that Kris' bodyguard Jack is in love with her.
* In ''Literature/{{Cerberon}}'', Margaret becomes attracted to George after he volunteers to be her escort for her journey to America. He is [[ObliviousToLove oblivious to her attraction]] until she mentions she wouldn't mind his intimate attention.
* In ''Literature/StarTrekStringTheory'', the BackStory for ally character Ziv and minor antagonist Sem involves this trope; Ziv was Sem's bodyguard, and in violation of their people's custom they had a sexual relationship.
* ''Literature/TheWheelOfTime'': This sort of thing is common between Warders and Aes Sedai . It helps that the [[PsychicLink Warder Bond]] means that the Warder is the one person in the world who [[BeneathTheMask can see through the emotionless Aes Sedai mask]].
* ''Literature/MistbornTheOriginalTrilogy'' : Vin in the second book to Elend, as she's a [[OneManArmy Mistborn]] and he's a {{Muggle}} NonActionGuy. It ends when [[spoiler: Elend marries Vin and subsequently TakesALevelInBadass, becoming a Mistborn himself]].

* ''Literature/KushielsLegacy'': [[ChasteHero Joscelin]] denies himself any attraction, romantic or otherwise, to Phedre, saying that he can't both be

Anakin Skywalker was supposed to be bodyguarding her in Typho's absence. Thus he decided to track down Skywalker; later he assumes that Vader killed them both, so he has to kill Vader. [[ForegoneConclusion You can imagine how that went.]]
** In the Literature/JediAcademyTrilogy General Wedge Antilles is set to bodyguarding Qwi Xux,
Lancelot share an ex-Imperial scientist who had worked on the Death Star, the [[ComicBook/DarkEmpire World Devastators]], and the Sun Crusher, cheerfully oblivious to what these projects would be used for.
* In the ''Literature/GemmaDoyle'' trilogy apparently it was once pretty common for the Rakshana and the members of the Order they guarded to be lovers. It may or may not be worth noting that neither pairing ends well, but then, what pairing in this series does?

* From the ''Literature/HonorHarrington'' series:

* In Andy [=McDermott's=] ''Nina Wilde'' series, the titular AdventurerArchaeologist and her ex-SAS bodyguard Eddie Chase slowly fell in love and married over the course of their adventures.

* ''Series/GameOfThrones'':
** King Renly Baratheon is object of affection for both Ser Loras Tyrell (an unusual reciprocal example because they form a same-sex couple) and Brienne of Tarth (a rare gender inversion of the trope), who are members of his Kingsguard. Brienne later rues the fact that she only held him once, as he was dying. Jaime later figures it out.
** And, as mentioned above, "[[MemeticMutation The King of the Friendzone]]" himself Ser Jorah Mormont qualifies, even if AllLoveIsUnrequited. He takes this trope to the furthest, being exiled by his beloved twice and threatened with death, he takes extreme measurements to return to her and beg to become her bodyguard again.
** Daario Naharis is also one of Dany's bodyguards, and she keeps him close partly to have him as her lover.
** In the first two seasons Sandor Clegane served as Joffrey's bodyguard and his duties contained guarding also Joffrey's betrothed Sansa, for whom Sandor seemed to have some mixed feelings.
* In ''Series/{{Heroes}}'', this APPEARED to be the case for Peter and Claire. This was squashed immediately upon the reveal that they're actually each others long lost uncle and niece. Of course this didn't actually stop the shipping or the sexual tension between them. The fact that the actors portraying the two got involved surely contributed to the shipping and tension. Hayden's young age (relatively) added some risque' spice, as well.
* In ''Series/{{Charmed}}'', the PowersThatBe mandate a strict law against Whitelighters falling in love with their wiccan charges. But naturally, this was dealt with [[SecondHandStorytelling offscreen]] and waived in the case of Piper (main character), who married Leo and later on in the series even got to have a child. Even with Piper's mom and Sam, another whitelighter, having an affair and ended up with Paige.
* In ''Series/TheWestWing'', CJ Cregg and her bodyguard Simon Donovan ([[RetroactiveRecognition better known as]] [[Series/{{NCIS}} Gibbs]]) when she's under Secret Service protection while being stalked. When they catch the guy CJ needed protection from in the first place, [[spoiler:Simon is promptly shot and killed. Thanks, Creator/AaronSorkin. Thanks a lot.]]
* In ''Series/TerminatorTheSarahConnorChronicles'', while there isn't anything romantic going on ''yet'' between John and Cameron, a lot of John's growing attachment and protectiveness of her is stemming from her own protectiveness of him. Then there's the second season finale, in which [[spoiler:John, against the advice of both his mother and Agent Ellison, travels into the future to retrieve Cameron's chip]]. Cue Fangirl {{Squee}}.
* Series/{{Chuck}} and his bodyguard, Sarah. Chuck has a massive crush on Sarah. Sarah seems to entertain the idea of a relationship with Chuck, but there's the whole CIA thing getting in the way, and it's causing a few problems. Especially considering that they have to play the roles of [[TheBeard boyfriend and girlfriend]] and occasionally a [[UndercoverAsLovers married couple]] on certain missions. Less overtly (this is a family show after all), the other bodyguard in Chuck's life...John Casey, played by Creator/AdamBaldwin. Scroll up this page a tad...
* In ''Series/TinMan'' fandom, DG/Cain plays out like this most of the time. DG is [[spoiler: Princess of Oz, named for her ancestor, Dorothy Gale]]. Cain is a BadassNormal by Ozian standards, a commoner, and a law enforcement man/soldier by trade. Sweetening the deal is that, in the first part of the series, Cain's former boss forced him into a promise to "not leave her side at any cost."
* In an episode of ''Series/TheEqualizer'' Robert [=McCall=] chews out Mickey Kostmeyer for sleeping with a Swedish foreign student he was supposed to be guarding, pointing out that if the killers had chosen to strike at that moment they both would have been killed.
* ''Series/BabylonFive'':
** G'Kar may have been trying to invoke this trope when he insisted that the rogue telepaths leaving B5 have Narn bodyguards. Given G'Kar's attempt in the premiere episode to get telepathic genetic material for the Narn race via the old-fashioned mating method, one wonders if he wasn't trying to set up a few {{Interspecies Romance}}s.
** Lennier isn't a bodyguard per se, but he does have a crush on Delenn and he does consider himself honor-bound to protect her.
* As Echo's [[spoiler: fourth]] official handler in ''{{Series/Dollhouse}}'', love interest Paul Ballard has one of these, though the crush began long before he actually started work as a bodyguard.
** Done much squickier with [[spoiler: Sierra]] and her original handler.
* ''Series/{{Bones}}'': Although not a technical bodyguard, Agent Booth often says that keeping his partner, Dr. Brennan, safe is his responsibility, seeing as she is not trained as an agent and (for at least part of the series) is not supposed to be carrying a gun. This stance towards Bones' safety leads to much [[UnresolvedSexualTension UST]] and EveryoneCanSeeIt.
* One episode of ''Series/{{Angel}}'' depicts Wesley getting involved with a girl he's been hired to protect ("Guise Will Be Guise"). The guy who hired him was apparently knew about this trope, because Wesley was impersonating Angel, who was wanted specifically because he [[CelibateHero can't have sex]]. [[spoiler: He needed her for a VirginSacrifice - as it turned out, he should have started paying attention to this possibility a lot earlier]]
* In ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'', Angel was originally supposed to act as a secret protector for Buffy the Slayer - but, while watching over her, fell in love.
* Inverted in season 5 of ''Series/TwentyFour'', with First Lady Martha Logan, fully disgusted with her husband's actions, falling for Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce. [[spoiler:Season 6 finds the Logans separated (divorced?) and Pierce retired from the Secret Service and romantically involved with Martha.]]
%%* Because StalkingIsLove, the ''Series/{{Smallville}}'' episode "Trespass".
* The ''Series/{{NCIS}}'' episode "Defiance" had a character of the day fall in love with [=McGee=]. She then used this to catch him off guard in order to stage her own abduction, and the episode leaves open whether or not she was acting the entire time.
* This is basically the premise of ''Amor en custodia'', an Argentinean telenovela which has been remade in other countries, included México, where it was remade twice: One time in TV Azteca and Its fourth remake, which is currently on air in Televisa under the title "Amores Verdaderos"
* ''Series/StarskyAndHutch'': Hutch gets into one of these with a visiting Russian ballerina who's received death threats.
* ''Series/PersonOfInterest'': Reese and Sophia were clearly going down this trope's path, as well as with other women Reese protects, but it's always pretty one sided.

[[spoiler: When Astraea accepted the Demon's Soul, all of her knights turned on and tried to kill her, save for Garl, who remained by her side. *** [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender inverted]]. There is a non-professional relationship of ''some'' kind between Prince Freyjadour and his bodyguard Lyon, especially if he gathers all [[OneHundredandEight 108]] stars. Given that Lyon was raised by Frey's parents, there's also a NotBloodSiblings element.
*** [[LesYay Lelei and Lucretia]] is a rather strange relationship, since the woman Lelei is guarding is definitely the OneeSama, ''and'' it's ambiguous whether she returns Lelei's feelings. Lucretia's own preferences, at least, seem to match up, as Cathari mentions that she and Lucretia were once "more than friends." Lucretia's relationship with Lelei is made rather less ambiguous (or, alternately, given a RelationshipReveal) when, on the night before a big battle, Lucretia suggests that she and Lelei get some rest, and Lelei asks if Lucretia wouldn't mind staying up just a little longer - after which the screen fades to black. After the war, [[spoiler:the two of them vanish, presumably together]]. On a side note, if you have Oboro dig into Lelei's past, he comes up with the following:
---->'''Oboro:''' "Lelei used to be a guard at Agate Prison, but she fell for Lucretia's pretty -- I MEAN, she was concerned about Lucretia, as she came with her. Now she's kind of Lucretia's...assistant."
** Videogame/SuikodenIII has [[GenderInvertedTrope Gender Inverted Example]] #2: [[NonActionGuy Thomas]] is the Lord of Budehuc Castle and [[CuteBruiser Cecile]] is the Captain of the Guard. She all but publicly confessing her crush for Thomas (including [[ThroughHisStomach making meatballs for his lunch]])
* This is one of ''VideoGame/FireEmblem's'' favorite tropes. Pick any Fire Emblem game and there will be at least one character (if not more) infatuated with their liege.
** VideoGame/FireEmblemAkaneia: Both Camus and Hardin to Nyna ([[spoiler:however both fall victim to ShipSinking]]) and Samson/Sheema (role inverted, liege infatuated with bodyguard).
** VideoGame/FireEmblemJugdral:
*** Mideel/Aideen, Lewyn/Fury ([[GenderInvertedTrope gender flipped]]- Lewyn had a crush on Fury's [[CoolBigSis older sister Mahnya]]), Leif/Nanna (again, gender flipped, though the 5th game reveals that this is more like ChildhoodFriendRomance), and Fred/Olwen (doubling as MayDecemberRomance since he's quite older than her).
*** It's also heavily implied that [[LadyOfBlackMagic Princess Isthar's]] childhood friend and guardian Reinhardt is in love with her. Unfortunately for him, [[AllLoveIsUnrequited she's in love with]] [[TheDragon Prince Julius]]. Doubly unfortunately for him, Julius loves her back and is a major {{Yandere}} to boot, threatening to kill Reinhardt if he ever comes near Ishtar again.
** [[VideoGame/FireEmblemElibe Fire Emblem Binding Blade]]: Saul/Dorothy ([[GenderInvertedTrope gender flipped]]), Klein/Thite ([[GenderInvertedTrope gender flipped]], possibly also role inverted because Thite's too much of a SugarAndIcePersonality to act on any feelings she might have unless Klein speaks up) and possibly either Rutger or Lance/Clarine and Shin/Sue.
** [[VideoGame/FireEmblemElibe Fire Emblem Blazing Sword]]: Kent/Lyndis, Rath/Lyndis, Erk/Priscilla, Erk/Serra, Guy/Priscilla and [[LesYay Florina/Lyndis]]. [[PlayerCharacter Tactician]] / [[LauncherOfAThousandShips Lyndis]] (also inverted, or LesYay) can be implied from the early chapters, though this doesn't really hold out past Chapter 3 or so. This might also be the case for Sain/Lyndis, but he seems to [[MatchmakerCrush be more partial to supporting Kent's feelings]], and on the other hand he also has all the signs of [[LadykillerInLove crushing]] ''[[LadykillerInLove hard]]'' on Priscilla during their supports, but they have no shared ending.
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemTheSacredStones'': Eirika/either Seth or Forde, Vanessa/Innes ([[GenderInvertedTrope gender flipped]]), and arguably Ephraim/Myrrh. One of the bosses in Eirika's path is even a general under Queen Ismaire, who proves LoveMakesYouEvil. It's hinted that Selena's feelings towards Emperor Vigarde might fall in this trope too.
** ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemTellius FireEmblem: Radiant Dawn]]'':
*** Sothe and Micaiah are like this but the odd part is that they refer to each other as family (and [[LikeBrotherAndSister Brother/Sister]]) regularly.
*** The knight Geoffrey has a huge crush on Princess Elincia, as seen in his support conversations and other dialogue. It's seemingly doomed given Elincia's unsubtle crush on Ike. [[spoiler: Then it is requited in the second game, as Ike does care for Elincia but ''not'' romantically, she starts growing out of her feelings and into her roles as TheHighQueen... which allows her to grow closer to Geoffrey, leading to their marriage in certain endings]].
** Lyre's huge crush on her captain, Ranulf. Conversations between Lyre and her twin sister Lethe reveal that Lyre never really liked fighting all that much, and pretty much only joined the army [[SubordinateExcuse to be with Ranulf and her sister]].
** Ranulf's second subordinate Kyza is also implied to have a [[HoYay crush on him]], although in the Japanese version it's not so much implied as it is outright spelled out.
** Gatrie has one on Astrid in ''Path of Radiance'', to the point where he doesn't seem as able to flirt with her as easily as he does other girls.
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening'': Lissa/either Lon'qu or Frederick, the latter doubling as FirstLove. Genderflipped with Chrom/either Sully or Sumia and Cordelia's UnrequitedLove for Chrom, and also with Virion and Cherche. Also Maribelle and Gaius -- and maybe Henry as well, as in their S support he offers to be Maribelle's [[KnightInShiningArmor Knight In Blood-Stained Armor]].
*** From the [[spoiler: second generation]], the closest would be [[spoiler: Chrom's daughter]] Lucina and [[spoiler: Cherche's son]] Gerome. Double if [[spoiler: Gerome's father is the aforementioned Frederick.]]
** ''VideoGame/FireEmblemFates'': In this game [[PlayerCharacter the Avatar]] is a Prince or Princess so, depending on their gender, the {{battle butler}} Jakob and/or the {{ninja}} Kaze (for a Female Avatar) or the {{ninja maid}}s Felicia and Flora (for a Male Avatar) can potentially develop this towards them.
*** In a similar vein Takumi's retainer Oboro already has a crush on him before their supports even begin, and unlike the above Chrom and Cordelia it's fully possible to reach S-Rank in their support chain.
*** Niles's devotion to Prince Leo has [[HoYay strong shades of this]], with a side of IOweYouMyLife.
*** Among the [[spoiler: Second Generation]] characters, [[MagicalGirlWarrior Ophelia]] considers herself sworn to [[WhiteMage Forrest]]'s service just as [[spoiler: her father Odin is sworn to the aforementioned Prince Leo aka Forrest's father]], and she can be... excessively fierce in her attempts to protect the prince, to the point of nearly attacking street merchants whose perfume caused Forrest to cough. If they reach an S Support, Forrest proclaims his love for her and she reciprocates.
* Part of the premise of first person shooter ''VideoGame/RedSteel'', between the protagonist and the (quickly kidnapped) girl in distress. ** In ''VideoGame/TalesOfTheAbyss'', it's [[ImpliedLoveInterest implied]] that this is the case between Anise and Ion, as well as Arietta and Ion.
** Regarding ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'', the ''Tales of Fandom 2'' DVD reveals that [[spoiler: Kratos Aurion]] has feelings for [[spoiler: a princess]] whom he protected before he met Lloyd. [[spoiler: Four-thousand years before.]]
* ''VideoGame/{{Disgaea 2|CursedMemories}}''
** There's this type of relationship between Adell and Rozalin. After mistakenly summoning her and binding her to follow him around, Adell swears he'll protect Rozalin with his life. Rozalin swears she'll kill him for the indignity he's caused her. They become attracted to each other. HilarityEnsues.
** Taro also feels this way about Rozalin, to the point that he practically became Rozalin's servant just so he could fit this trope.
* ''VideoGame/BeyondGoodAndEvil,'': Double H over the heroine, Jade. The fact that she [[RescueRomance rescued him]] from an [[ElectricTorture alien torture chamber]] doesn't help... Nor does the fact that he [[KnightInShiningArmor wears shining armor...]] And he [[TakeMyHand selflessly dives to catch her when she falls]], spouting a line in a sappy voice... And let's not forget his sudden attempt to [[SmoochOfVictory kiss her.]] His [[AllThereInTheManual official description]] even states that he's "selflessly devoted to her."
* ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' loves this trope.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'': When a summoner makes the pilgrimage, they bring guardians. Romance often ensuses. [[spoiler: In fact, according to Yunalesca, love [[TheFourLoves of some kind]] is required for the guardian to become the Final Aeon.]]
*** Summoner Yuna and her guardian Tidus become a couple on the way.
*** Summoner Dona and her guardian Barthello are a couple. This is more evident in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX2'', after they retire.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII'' Squall loves Rinoa, though that's less of a bodyguard (although he does that too) and more of a [[IncrediblyLamePun hired gunblade]] deal.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'': Aerith hires Cloud. She repays him with a date. [[spoiler: Though in this case it's invoked: Aerith cares for Cloud a lot but the one she's in romantic love with is Cloud's dead friend Zack, and they're TogetherInDeath in ''Advent Children''. Cloud was something of a ReplacementGoldfish because he ''greatly'' resembled Zack, and ''Crisis Core'' explains the very complicated reasons why. Cloud is all but stated to end up with his VictoriousChildhoodFriend Tifa.]]
** Inverted in ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI'', where Locke apparently pledges to bodyguard any girl he gets a crush on. One of the girls he pledges to protect is the mightiest soldier of TheEmpire's army, and the other is a [[PersonOfMassDestruction walking nuke]] and [[TearJerker very sadly]] by the fact that Locke's pledges are the product of the guilt he feels from failing to protect his first love, twice.
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX''. Zidane quickly becomes infatuated with Garnet. While he definitely does as much guarding as her offiical knight (Steiner) he's officially her kidnapper.
** ''VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy'' has a few teasing's here and there. There's Cecil teasing the Onion Knight over his protectiveness of Terra, a slight ship tease between Vaan protecting Terra, and the closeness between the Warrior of Light and the goddess Cosmos, [[spoiler:especially as the former is revealed to be a Manikin of Cid of the Lufaine and the goddess is revealed to be a Manikin of Cid's wife.]]
* ''VideoGame/NeverwinterNights'':
** Nathyrra and Valen are totally there as combat support.
** In the same vein, in [=KotOR=] I: Did the Jedi Council really have to assign Carth, Bastila, and/or Juhani (as appropriate to PC gender/preference) to help you? Granted, each has legit reasons to help even without orders ''or'' romantic entanglements - but [[WildMassGuessing it's much more fun]] [[EpilepticTrees when you consider the possibilities]].
*** Inverted somewhat in ''VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublic'' if you're playing a female. Even though you are a VERY powerful Force-user and [[spoiler: the mind-wiped ex-Dark Lord of the Sith]], Carth is still very protective, and insists "Let me protect you; from yourself, from the Sith. You HAVE to let me try." Never mind you could probably have wiped the floor with him six levels ago... [[spoiler: Ditto with Juhani, albeit in a much subtler manner]].
* ''VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublicIITheSithLords'':
** The ex-Sith Assassin Visas Marr, particularly ([[LesYay but not only]]) if you are the male Exile. This is very quiet (apart from the breathlessly devoted, "My life for yours"...), and will only make itself apparent if you are NOT a dog kicking Sith bastard, and are nice to her when you've defeated her. Yes, [[DefeatMeansFriendship Defeat Means Bodyguard Crush]].
** Atton Rand remains protective of the Exile and consistently anxious for the Exile's approval, to the point that [[spoiler:Kreia]] is able to blackmail him with it, whether the Exile is Light Side ''or'' a crazed dog-kicking Sith bastard. It's most apparent with a female Exile, but [[HoYay it's there with a male Exile too]].
* In ''VideoGame/NeverwinterNights2'' and Mask of the Betrayer, both of the romance options for male characters that made the final cut began watching over the hero to keep him safe.
* ''[[VideoGame/PokemonMysteryDungeonExplorers Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness/Sky]]'': Apparent inversion (liege seemingly in love with bodyguard, although that may be a matter of interpretation) with Celebi (technically a gender-neutral Pokémon, but it acts feminine (and kinda {{Tsundere}}) and has the "Shiny" pink coloration instead of its normal green) for Grovyle.
* ''VideoGame/MegaManZero'': Zero and Ciel is certanly an inversion, as Ciel quite clearly has a crush on Zero, and he doesn't show any feelings for her or at least recognition of her feelings. It's directly addressed in the 4th game where Neige and Craft were once in a relationship, and she seems to show that she can relate to Ciel in the ending, as both Zero and Craft were reploids and thus the situation is similar.
* ''VideoGame/{{Utawarerumono}}'': When Touka's clan becomes someone's bodyguard, they're supposed to bear their child (assuming they're female) which makes her... eagerness... to be his bodyguard make a little more sense, no?
* ''VideoGame/HalfLife2'': Played straight and flipped a few times in Episodes. Alyx Vance is sometimes escorted by Gordon, and when Gordon loses his weapons, she becomes the bodyguard. She has an obvious hero worship and geekette attraction to Gordon, which her father openly encourages.
* ''VideoGame/LegendOfMana'': Jumi always come in pairs as a Guardian and a Knight, and they are expected to be devoted to one another in ways that blur the boundaries between duty and love. And gender doesn't matter, either.
* At the end of ''VideoGame/ResidentEvil4'' Ashley asks if Leon wants to go to "her place" for some ''overtime''. He declines.
* ''VideoGame/GrandiaII'', Ryudo towards Elena. "Don't like women", huh? ''Right''....
* ''VideoGame/{{Drakengard}}'': [[DistressedDamsel Furiae]] has one of these crushes. [[spoiler: Too bad it's her brother, Caim.]]
* In ''VideoGame/ExitFate'', Ayara has this kind of relationship with her commanding officer, Daniel Vinyard, deserting her post so she could track down and join him after he was accused of being a traitor. She routinely insists on accompanying him into the more dangerous places (fortunately she's a very good fighter) and has a heartbreak when she feels the growing size of the Elysium Army puts a distance between them. She can also relate well to Jasper, who has a similar situation with his own commander, Erin.
* ''VideoGame/{{Dishonored}}'':
** This is hinted at and confirmed by WordOfGod. Empress Jessamine expresses a fondness for Corvo that is rather hard to take as simply platonic affection. A few characters actually ponder this themselves, with Lydia considering asking Corvo about this but deciding that it'd be too rude to do so. Similarly, it's also heavily hinted that Emily is likely Corvo's biological daughter considering [[PapaWolf how close he is to her]]. The Empresses' words during the OpeningNarration just add fuel to the belief that she and Corvo were lovers. You don't say "When you are near, my heart is at peace" to just anybody after all.
*** [[OedipusComplex Emily herself]] seems to have a crush on Corvo:
---> "If you don't marry my mother, will you marry me?"
** ''VideoGame/Dishonored2'' confirms that Emily is Corvo's daughter in its opening tutorial when she outright calls him "Father," and a biography about Corvo in Emily's safehouse further reveals that [[OpenSecret nearly everyone in Dunwall Tower knew or at least suspected that Corvo and Jessamine were romantically involved.]]
* In ''VideoGame/StarStealingPrince'', [[spoiler:Erio]] is implied to have such feelings towards [[spoiler:Astra,]] but doesn't speak up about it due to thinking it's creepy to feel that way.
* ''VideoGame/TearsToTiara2'': Daphnis is a WholesomeCrossdresser {{Meido}} who's HappinessInSlavery that he get to protect his master and [[ChildhoodFriendRomance childhood friend]] Elissa. When he's about to pull a HeroicSacrifice so she can escape, she quickly realize she loves him back.
* ''VideoGame/Halo5Guardians'': Warden Eternal gives off a certain vibe of this, given his obsessively fervent desire to protect [[spoiler: Cortana, and his calling her "my Reclaimer".]]
* ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild'': Her behavior in some of the cutscenes already suggest it, but finishing Kass's sidequests and listening to his teacher's song at Rito village will confirm that [[spoiler: Princess Zelda had fallen for Link, her appointed knight. As it turns out, Kass's teacher had been a Shiekah poet for the Hylian royal court who had been Zelda's age 100 years ago, and had fallen in love with her. However, she only had eyes for her knight, which left the poet jealous and resentful. After the Calamity Ganon appeared, the poet witnesses Link sacrifice himself protecting Zelda and Zelda's dormant power awakening through her love for him. After which, he decided to write the hero a song to be passed down to him when he finally awoke. It's this song that Kass preforms to Link, which reveals the extent of Zelda's feelings for him.]] How Link feels, however, is purposely ambiguous and left up to the player to decide via dialogue options with npcs.
