* Shirou Emiya of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight'' tends to be extremely protective of others, especially the heroine of each route, with most of the romances looking like this. In ''Fate'' he frustrates Saber to no end by throwing himself into danger to protect her even though by the rules of the Holy Grail War she is supposed to be ''his'' bodyguard; while Saber complains repeatedly she does find his determination and chivalry charming, which makes sense as [[spoiler: she is King Arthur and called the King of Knights for a reason]]. In ''Unlimited Blade Works'' Shirou is much more willing to let Saber do the fighting and spends most of the route trying to protect Rin and is seen to be quite jealous of Rin's actual bodyguard Archer. In ''Heaven's Feel'' Shirou devotes his efforts to help save Sakura even to the point that he [[agonizingly abandons Kiritsugu's ideal which was his main driving force in the previous routes because he cannot bring himself to harm Sakura, whom he had sworn to protect, even though she causes the deaths of numerous innocents with her curse]]. This trope seems to be the way that Shirou develops romantic feelings for ''anyone'' and will likely be seen in the Illya route if it is ever released.

* Shirou Emiya and Saber in Saber's route of ''VisualNovel/FateStayNight''. Shirou at first ends up accidentally summoning her while fighting Lancer, and continues to flatter her by constantly putting himself in harm's way for her, despite her protests, not to mention the fact that the very idea behind the Holy Grail Wars is that she is the one who is supposed to protect him. [[spoiler:Another boost is that the "true" ending of her route ends happily, unlike Rin's or Sakura's routes (subtitled ''Unlimited Blade Works'' and ''Heaven's Feel'', respectively).]]

** This is hinted at, but never confirmed. Empress Jessamine expresses a fondness for Corvo that is rather hard to take as simply platonic affection. A few characters actually ponder this themselves, with Lydia considering asking Corvo about this but deciding that it'd be too rude to do so. Similarly, it's also heavily hinted that Emily is likely Corvo's biological daughter considering [[PapaWolf how close he is to her]]. The Empresses' words during the OpeningNarration just add fuel to the belief that she and Corvo were lovers. You don't say "When you are near, my heart is at peace" to just anybody after all.

* This is one of ''Franchise/FireEmblem's'' favorite tropes. Pick any Fire Emblem game and there will be at least one character (if not more) infatuated with their liege.

* ''Literature/PrinceRoger''" The 'March/Prince Roger' saga has the spoilt misunderstood brat, Prince Roger Ramius Sergei Alexander Chiang [=MacClintock=] (whew, [[OverlyLongName what a mouthful!]]) and his ActionGirl bodyguard, Nimashet Despreaux, agonize endlessly before finally hooking up in the second book, ''March to the Sea.'' This was complicated further by the part where ''after'' they finally decided to hook up, Roger went from third to first in the line of succession -- meaning that country-girl commoner Nimashet had just gone from 'going to be married to the most redundant junior prince' to 'prospective Empress'. The latter possibility terrified her enough that she immediately broke the relationship off cold -- which created some serious tension, given that she was ''still his bodyguard''. Then, Nimashet was given a ''direct order'' by her superior officer to ''reinstate'' the relationship and become the eventual Empress Nimashet. Even though they know it's a bad idea to fraternize inside the chain of command, they need her to steady Roger because he'd either abdicate to be with her again or else try to rule the Empire alone and end up as Emperor Roger the Mad. (Nimashet is pretty much the only person around who can hold Roger back from massacre once his BerserkButton is pushed, and Roger on some level ''knows'' this.)
* ''Literature/KushielsLegacy'': [[ChasteHero Joscelin]] denies himself any attraction, romantic or otherwise, to Phedre, saying that he can't both be her bodyguard (servant of Cassiel) and her lover, because it goes against his vows. Granted, in Kushiel's Dart he and Phedre, ah...[[UnusualEuphemism paid homage to Namaah]]. Later in the series, they develop a proper relationship as the Comtesse Phedre no Delaunay de Montreve and her consort (read: practically husband) Joscelin.

Modern beliefs in equality between the sexes make the good old RescueRomance trope somewhat difficult to play straight. However, there's a question in the air... what if "that male" is either ''hired or honor-bound'' to protect "that female"? That wouldn't be chauvinist at all - not only is the guy getting rewarded or paid (whether in money, benefits, rank raises, fame/reputation etc.) by his bosses or upperclassmen for taking care of the girl's safety, but it fulfills residual KnightInShiningArmor imagery without causing eyebrow raising among the fandom.

If said bodyguard is a female who takes care of a male, she can keep her romantic feelings for her ward ''and'' show off her ActionGirl skills constantly, which greatly decreases the chances of her being a victim of {{Chickification}}. Finally, this provides a good way to get a [[ChasteHero Chaste]] or CelibateHero, who normally wouldn't be interested in the opposite (or [[HoYay the same]]) sex into a position where their romantic feelings can be more easily played upon.

Sweet deal... or is it? This often conflicts with [[HonorBeforeReason the protector's sense of professionalism]], especially if they're a BattleButler or a NinjaMaid. What happens if bodyguard and the liege's [[WomanScorned relationship goes bad]]? What if the conflicts distracts the protector or if plans and orders coming from the bosses change...

Variants include the protected having his/her crush for the bodyguard first, and the bodyguard being picked for the job because one of them has a crush. If the bodyguard seeks to protect a person ''because'' he/she has a crush on them, but CannotSpitItOut, it's a DeclarationOfProtection.
