* Season 2 of ''VideoGame/BatmanTheTelltaleSeries'' famously SwappedRoles between the Joker and Harley Quinn. Mr. J (here an unstable mental patient who's not yet a criminal mastermind) is the fawning, eager, lovesick minion while Harley is impassive, exploits Joker's feelings for her, and is in charge (although she hints she has some feelings for him, but sees him as childish and wasting his potential). Two different versions of the finale take this in still other directions:
** In the "Vigilante" version, Joker will actually be willing to turn her in to the authorities for her own good, even knowing she'll hate him for it.
** In the "Villain" version, Joker becomes more assertive and earns Harley's admiration, with them becoming more equal parters and a borderline OutlawCouple [[spoiler: though you soon learn that Joker is willing to work behind her back to mess with Batman, and when the chips are down he even flees the scene, leaving her behind with a half-abashed smile]].

** In the anime, one of the reasons Miki joined the School Live Club was because she thought Yuki made living in a ZombieApocalypse more bareable. This contrasts the original manga, where Miki was annoyed by Yuki's delusions and it took several chapters for them to become mutual friends. In general, Miki in the manga was initially very distant and distrusting of everyone. The anime removed these elements.

The novel's Valjean initially hates Marius and wants him to die at the barricade rather than take Cosette from him, but in the musical he almost immediately prays for his life and describes him as "like the son I might have known if God had granted me a son." As for Marius, in the novel he pushes Valjean out of Cosette's life after he learns that Valjean is an ex-convict, only to [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone regret it later]], while in the musical it's Valjean who makes the decision to leave and Marius tries unsuccessfully to dissuade him.

Thénardier gleefully insults him in front of their inn customers and is often (for example, in [[Film/LesMiserables2012 the film version]]) portrayed as the one who [[HenpeckedHusband "wears the pants"]] in their marriage.

Sometimes adaptations change the way characters feel towards one another. Maybe they're not as close in the source or maybe they're made into enemies in the adaptation. AdaptationalHeroism, PromotedToLoveInterest, and AdaptationalVillainy typically effect how the characters act towards each other, as do being DemotedToExtra and being an AscendedExtra. Often times, being a PragmaticAdaptation changes things around as well.

In the comics the two aren't friends, and Stark was even one of the men that exiled Bruce from Earth in the prelude to ''ComicBook/PlanetHulk''.
* In ''Tarnsman of Literature/{{Gor}}'', the first book in the series, Tarl, a Warrior of the City-State Ko-Ro-Ba and the protagonist, is opposed by Marlenus, the Ubar (king) of the City-State Ar. In the course of the book Tarl kidnaps [[ThePresidentsDaughter Marlenus' daughter]]. In the film ''Gor'' '''very''' loosely based on the book, Marlenus is the feeble old king of the village Koroba who gets kidnapped by the BigBad and Tarl rescues him, helped by the King's daughter.}
* In ''Film/{{Maleficent}}'', Aurora views Maleficent as her fairy godmother. This is very different both from the fairytale (where the evil fairy is not even named, and only appears two times) and the [[Disney/SleepingBeauty first Disney adaptation]], where Maleficent is the villain.
* In the ''Film/SuperMarioBros'' movie Mario is several years older than Luigi and is his father figure. In [[Franchise/SuperMarioBros the games]] they are fraternal twins.
* The [[Film/WillyWonkaAndTheChocolateFactory film]] [[Film/CharlieAndTheChocolateFactory adaptations]] of ''Literature/CharlieAndTheChocolateFactory'' portray Veruca and Violet as rivals. They do not interact in the book.
* In the film of ''Theatre/{{RENT}}'', Benny is on much less friendly terms with the bohemians, and Maureen and Joanne have a lot less arguments to the point that their relationship is sort of stable and they even [[spoiler:get engaged]].
* The ''Series/{{Glee}}'' concerts (and thus The Film of the Concert) are considered an adaptation or official alternate universe to the TV show, and in them everyone gets along really well, which is not something present on the show. That is, except Brittany and Blaine, who have a rivalry that isn't on the show, either. Also of note is that in the concerts Santana is clearly publicly out and dating Brittany, which she wasn't on the show until ''after'' the concert film.

* This is common with Achilles and Patroclus, characters first introduced in ''Literature/TheIliad'', due to their ambiguous relationship. They pass for lovers (such as in ''Literature/TheSongOfAchilles'' and in the vision of many reviewers, including Plato himself), cousins (like in ''Film/Troy''), or just very good friends with lots of HoYay, DependingOnTheWriter and how they are trying to portray Achilles.

* ''Series/{{Elementary}}'':
** Traditionally Literature/SherlockHolmes meets John Watson when he needs a roommate. In ''Series/{{Elementary}}'' Sherlock and [[GenderFlip Joan]] meet when she becomes his sober companion, making their relationship more intimate. Though, Watson ''is not'' PromotedToLoveInterest. She and Sherlock are PlatonicLifePartners.
** [[spoiler:Irene]] secretly being Moriarty completely changed [[spoiler:her]] relationship with Sherlock and Watson.
* ''Series/GameOfThrones'' often has to change character relationships in the process of adaptation:
** Sansa and Arya get along better in the show than in the books. Their relationship still isn't really close, but Sansa's [[BigBrotherBully bullying]] was omitted and Arya's AnnoyingYoungerSibling tendencies are played for laughs.
** Tyrion and Shae have a genuine love affair in the show. In the books he's paying her to pretend she loves him but falls for her anyway; book!Shae never reciprocates his feelings.
** Cersei and Margaery's relationship is much more overtly antagonistic in the series. Not because of Cersei, who hates Margaery as much as she did in the books, but because of Margaery openly insulting and trying to undermine her. In the books Margaery mildly teases her at worse.
** Due to AgeLift, Myrcella and Trystane are full on StarCrossedLovers, while in the books their betrothal leads to them become just friends since they're too young for romance.
** Similarly, Tommen is aged-up and has a romantic/sexual relationship with Margaery, while his book counterpart is only eight years old and sees her as a CoolBigSis.
** Stannis is shown lusting after Melisandre, while in the books their relationship is more professional and it's only implied that they slept together. And even then, it was probably just to [[spoiler:create shadow assassin children to help Stannis' war effort]] and not out of genuine attraction.
** Robin Arryn loves Littlefinger, whom he calls "[[HonoraryUncle Uncle Petyr]]". In the books Sweetrobin is terrified of him. It's actually Sansa that Sweetrobin adores, though this is heavily downplayed in the show.
** Brienne in the show is critical toward and annoyed by Pod, while her book counterpart is more gentle with him. Also, she starts her journey traveling with him at Jaime Lannister's suggestion, while in the books they run into each other while looking for Sansa Stark and she takes him under her wing.
** Ellaria Sand fights with her sort-of brother-in-law Doran Martell over whether or not to go war, but in the books their relationship is far more amicable.
** Davos and Shireen don't get many interactions in the books and are just amiable. The show elevates this to an IntergenerationalFriendship bordering on a surrogate parent/child relationship.
** Subverted with Lysa and Sansa. On the show Lysa is kind and motherly to Sansa at first, before her jealousy takes hold and makes her hostile. In the books Lysa behaves coldly toward her from the beginning, but it all ends in the same place.
** A case involving entire kingdoms, the animosity between the Reach and Dorne due to centuries of war is entirely absent on the show. In the books this old rivalry was inflamed when Oberyn Martell accidentally crippled Willas Tyrell. But since Willas was AdaptedOut there's no reason for the Tyrells to hate Oberyn -- Loras Tyrell even flirts with him.
* ''Series/MissFishersMurderMysteries'': In the books, Phryne's (most recurrent) love interest is Lin Chung. He gets married later into the books and continues to be friends with Phryne. In the show, after he gets married neither he nor his wife reappear, and Phryne instead has UnresolvedSexualTension with Inspector Robinson, who is much older in the books and only has a professional relationship with her.
* ''Series/{{Riverdale}}'':
** In the comics Jason and Cheryl bicker like is common for siblings. In ''Riverdale'' they're toned down and much more friendly, though it's unknown if their relationship is [[{{Twincest}} as 'friendly']] as they are in ''Series/AfterlifeWithArchie''
** Traditionally Archie and Betty are childhood friends, Veronica moves into town, Cheryl moves in later, and last is Kevin moving in. Cheryl and Kevin already live in Riverdale when Veronica comes along.

* ''Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles'':
** In [[Comicbook/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtlesMirage the original comics]] Karai is unrelated to The Shredder Oroku Saki. In [[WesternAnimation/{{Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003}} the 2003 continuity]] she's his adopted daughter. In [[WesternAnimation/{{Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2012}} the 2012 series]] it's originally implied that she's Saki's biological daughter, but later revealed that [[spoiler:he took her as a baby and her real father is Hamato Yoshi, making her the turtles' adoptive sister.]]
** Though April always ends up with Casey, the turtles feelings towards her change in each continuity. In [[Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles the original films]] Raph was teased for being attracted to her. In the 2003 show Don had a PrecociousCrush. In the 2012 series Don has a full blown crush and is Casey's romantic rival. In [[Film/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2014 the 2014 film]] series Mikey has a stalkerish crush on her.
** Splinter's dynamic with Hamato Yoshi also changes. Originally he's Yoshi's pet rat mutated into a humanlike form. In some verisons he simply is Hamato Yoshi transformed into a rat. In the 2003 series despite being his pet, Splinter views Yoshi as a father figure, even more so when they start communicating through a mystic orb. The turtles likewise respect him as if he were their grandpa. In the 2014 films Yoshi doesn't even exist, and they instead view April as their guardian spirit, since she treated them like pets as a child when they were part of her father's science experiment.
* In ''WesternAnimation/RatchetAndClank2016'' (the Ratchet & Clank movie based on the original game) and ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2016'' (the game based on that movie), Ratchet and Clank are much more friendly towards each other, much like their characterization [[CharacterizationMarchesOn in most of the other games]], in stark contrast to their characterizations in ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClank2002'' where Ratchet is a {{Jerkass}} toward Clank for most of the game and Clank occasionally gets snappish back at him.

* ''Franchise/KingdomHearts'':
** The series alters the dynamic between Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith. In which, Aerith is [[ImpliedLoveInterest implied to be Cloud's love interest]], while Tifa is portrayed as the manifestation of his inner light (it's left vague if she is even an ''actual person'' or not). When, in ''[[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII Final Fantasy VII's]]'' canon, Cloud and Tifa are the game's OfficialCouple and [[spoiler:Aerith dies, only to be TogetherInDeath with her boyfriend Zack]].
** In ''Final Fantasy VII'' and its related games, Zack is a PosthumousCharacter but was Aerith's love interest. In this canon Zack and Aerith haven't even met, and Zack is alive.
* In ''Series/GameOfThrones'', Tryion Lanniest and Margaery Tyrell have virtually no relationship whatsoever and and seem somewhat indifferent about each other. In ''VideoGame/TelltalesGameOfThrones'' however Margaery [[TookALevelInJerkass dislikes Tyrion]], to the point where she almost [[DisproportionateRetribution fires Mia Forrester for merely talking to him.]] Part of this is {{Justified}} as Mira is from North, which makes her suspicious to some and [[GenreSavvy Margaery knows this.]]
* In ''WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls'' Buttercup has an unrequited PrecociousCrush on Ace. In ''VideoGame/FusionFall'' she is given a PlotRelevantAgeUp (though still not old enough looking to date Ace) and they're [[DatingCatwoman a couple]].
* ''VideoGame/MegaManClassic'':
** Mega Man, Roll and Proto Man are "sibling robots" made by the same creator, Dr. Light, as do the other DLN line of Robot Masters such as Elec Man or Bomb Man. In ''VideoGame/MegaManBattleNetwork'', all of them are unrelated; Roll, Guts Man and Proto Man are Mega Man's allies made by different people.
** In ''Classic'', Bass was created by Dr. Wily. In BN, he's created by Dr. Cossack instead.
** Treble (aka Gospel) is Bass' robot wolf companion in ''Classic''. In ''BN'', it's a separate entity made out of internet bugs that threaten the Internet. Although later Bass do come in contact with this Gospel and take its power for himself.
** Many ''BN'' versions of enemy Robot Masters end up becoming Mega Man's friends and allies, although some of them do start as Mega Man's foes.
* ''VideoGame/HarvestMoonBackToNature'' was an outsourced {{retool}} of ''VideoGame/{{Harvest Moon 64}}'' where a large portion of the characterization was changed. Many characters relationships were revamped:
** In ''64'' the bachelorettes are the grandchildren of the [[VideoGame/HarvestMoon1 SNES]] bachelorettes-- Ann is related to Ann, Maria is related to Maria, Elli is related to Ellen (who is still alive), Karen is related to Eve, and Popuri is related to Nina. ''Back To Nature'' holds no such implications and takes place in Mineral Town instead of Flowerbud Village. The protagonist is heavily implied to be the grandson of the first protagonist in ''64'' while in ''Back To Nature'' he gets his farm from an unrelated older man who he befriended as a child.
** In ''64'' the rival couples were Ann/Cliff, Maria/Harris, Elli/Jeff, Karen/Kai, and Popuri/Gray. In ''Back To Nature the rival couples are Ann/Cliff, [[SuddenNameChange Mary]]/Gray, Ellen/Doctor, Karen/Rick, and Popuri/Kai.
** In ''64'' Gotz owned the local winery, was married to Sasha, and Karen was his daughter. In ''Back To Nature'' Gotz is a widower living in the woods while Sasha is married to Jeff. In ''64'' Jeff was Ellen's father figure and [[WifeHusbandry love interest.]]
** In ''64'' Rick is related to Ann and Gray, who are siblings. They all [[StrongFamilyResemblance have red hair]] due to their grandmother, Ann from [[VideoGame/HarvestMoon1 the first game]]. In ''Back To Nature'' Rick is Popuri's sibling.
** In ''64'' Kai and Rick don't interact or show any dislike for each other. In ''Back To Nature'' Rick is an [[MySisterIsOffLimits overprotective older brother]] while Kai TookALevelInJerkass and frequently teases him.
* ''VideoGame/{{Nier}}'': Since Nier was aged up in the western port to appeal to western audiences, Yonah is changed from his sister to his daughter.

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* In ''Webcomic/DumbingOfAge'', which started as an AlternateContinuity for the combined works of the ''Webcomic/{{Walkyverse}}'', numerous characters have slightly altered or completely different relationships from the original canon. For instance:
** Walky and Joyce are not only not in a relationship, they actually dislike one another.
** Becky and Joyce are childhood friends rather than meeting well into adulthood.
** Dina and Becky are in a romantic relationship, while they didn't even meet in the ''Walkyverse'' until after ''Webcomic/{{Shortpacked}}'''s finale because the former had originally died.
** Amber, Mike, and Ethan have known each other from before high school rather than meeting as employees in a toy store like in ''Shortpacked!''
** Amber and Sal first met when the latter held up a convenience store and the former stabbed her in the hand after she'd gotten arrested, thanks to her father [[{{Jerkass}} calling her weak for not trying to stop her]]. In the ''Walkyverse'', they don't really know each other at all.
** Billie and Danny know each other and nearly had sex once, but aren't close at all, while in the ''Walkyverse'' they're an OfficialCouple.

* In ''WebAnimation/DCSuperheroGirls'' Starfire and her sister Blackfire get along fine. One episode even has them bonding together. In the comics they [[CainAndAbel loathe each other]]. Blackfire even sold Starfire into slavery.

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* Mario and Peach have a strictly platonic relationship in ''Series/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow''. In the ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' games they are heavily {{Implied Love Interest}}s to each other. In the cartoon it can be justified as Mario [[VagueAge seems]] to be middle aged while Peach acts like someone in their late teens to early twenties. In the games they're both the same age, averting a MayDecemberRomance.
* Francine in the original ''WesternAnimation/{{Arthur}}'' books clearly [[PuppyLove likes]] Arthur. This is heavily toned down in the cartoon, however, they have a fair amount of ShipTease and are suggested to be a future OfficialCouple.
* While ''WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty'' is a parody rather than a straight adaptation of ''Film/BackToTheFuture'', it portrays the title duo as grandfather and grandson rather than an IntergenerationalFriendship.
* ''WesternAnimation/SonicBoom'':
** Amy received a AdaptationPersonalityChange. She's much calmer than in the ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' games. To go along with the change, she hides her affections for Sonic instead of making it exceedingly obvious. This means that Sonic isn't constantly annoyed at her affectionate behavior as he is in the games.
** Throughout the ''Sonic'' series, the brotherly relationship between Sonic and Tails has been a near-constant element ever since Tails debuted in 1992. However, while still often the two closest characters in ''Boom'', Tails is much more independent and the two seem to possess a lot of mutually exclusive hobbies, leading to relatively less character interaction between the two.
** Sonic and Knuckles' frat-boyesque friendship has been gaining more and more of a presence on the show, to the point that an entire episode was dedicated to it. In the mainstream franchise, Sonic and Knuckles rarely interact one-on-one, and their relationship is frosty at best and downright hostile at worst.
