** Hanse Davion started the Fourth Succession War at his wedding reception by offering his bride the Capellan Confederation as a wedding present, and delivered on half that with a blitzkrieg attack and having [[TheMole moles]] as two of the top three men in the Maskirovka. Hanse bartered the life of Joshua Marik, son of Free Worlds League leader Thomas Marik, offering to have Joshua transported to the New Avalon Institute of Science to treat his leukemia in exchange for the League producing badly-needed upgrade kits for forces fighting the Clans. Hanse also made a non-aggression pact with Theodore Kurita, promising not to send his troops into Combine space while the Clans remained a threat, and when Luthien itself came under attack, sent the Kell Hounds and Wolf's Dragoons mercenary units to "aid in Luthien's defense" [[ExactWords because he promised he wouldn't send his troops]].

** Nicholas Kerensky reordered the loyal warriors who followed him on the Second Exodus into the Clans, based on his vision (and we're talking actual quasi-mystical vision here) of a perfect warrior society with FantasticCasteSystem and animal totems. After quelling the Pentagon Civil War with his Clans, Nicholas started imposing his vision of society. When jealousy and greed took root in other Clans, aimed at Clan Wolverine, Nicholas allowed himself to be "manipulated" into doing things he wanted to do anyway, and let events unfold until the entirety of the Clans were arrayed against the Wolverines. The only thing he didn't see coming was Widowmader Khan Jason Karrige nuking the Wolverine city of Great Hope in a FalseFlagOperation, and Nicholas' retaliation ended up nuking the Clan Snow Raven capitol of Dehra Dun by accident. Finishing off the bulk of the Wolverines on Barbados, Nicholas [[WrittenByTheWinners rewrote Clan history to make the Wolverines into monsters, their destruction justified, their existence a cautionary tale]]: this is what happens if you stray from the Way of the Clans. [[PetTheDog But he did give Wolverine Khan Franklin Hallis the privilege of executing Jason Karrige for his role in the conflict]] before having Hallis' 'Mech shot InTheBack, and [[DueToTheDead erected tombstones on Barbados for Khan Franklin Hallis and Khan Sarah [=McEvedy=].]]
** Sarah [=McEvedy=] served under Aleksander Kerensky in the Star League Defense Force and followed his son Nicholas on the Second Exodus, where she was appointed Khan of Clan Wolverine. Sarah and her Wolverines remained {{Combat Pragmatist}}s compared to Nicholas' HonorBeforeReason, fielding new 'Mech and weapon designs, and allowing "migration" among her lower castes. Finally, realizing Nicholas was fully willing to sacrifice her Clan on the altar of his new society, she enacted a plan to evacuate as many of them as she could, though she'd leave behind many who weren't sufficiently loyal or just chose to stay. Apparently killed in the bombing of Great Hope, Franklin Hallis enacted her plan to jump Clan Wolverine out of Clan space, but ''not'' immediately back to the Inner Sphere. Rather, the Wolverines would wait until after Nicholas had formed a fleet to hunt them down, traveling the Exodus Road ''behind'' their pursuers. Sarah lived at least long enough to be interrogated on Nicholas' flagship, though she didn't give him all the information he wanted. And she may have been marooned by Nicholas on Barbados after the Annihilation of Clan Wolverine was complete, as there is a hint of her survival when Wolverine stragglers reached the planet.

* ''TabletopGame/BattleTech'': Owing to the setting running on GreyAndGreyMorality and the prevalence of [[TheChessmaster chessmasters]] in the highest ranks of military and government, most anyone in the setting who is magnificent is also a bastard (at least, to the people they've demonstrated their magnificence against). Some of the standouts are:

** Ulric Kerensky. As a staunch Warden forced to participate in the Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere, he used his tactical, strategic, logistical, and political acumen to have his Wolves advance farther and faster than anyone else. Either Clan Wolf would win the race to Terra and become the [=ilClan=], or the other Clans would overextend themselves and be open to defeat by Inner Sphere forces. After the death of [=ilKhan=] Leo Showers, the only way the Crusaders, even the ones within Clan Wolf, could deal with Ulric was by [[KickedUpstairs kicking him upstairs]] as the new [=ilKhan=], and Ulric even turned that to his favor. He "accidentally" let slip to [=ComStar=] that Terra was the invasion's ultimate goal, then negotiated the proxy Battle of Tukayyid, walking out with the only Clan victory while [=ComStar=] [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomped]] everyone else. Ulric promoted Inner Sphere freeborn Phelan Kell and 80-year-old Natasha Kerensky to Khans of Clan Wolf, showing the Clans their SuperBreedingProgram wasn't as super as they thought. Finally stripped of his position as [=ilKhan=], he laughed his way out of the Council and pitted the Crusaders of his own Clan against those of Jade Falcon, weakening both to the point the Clans made no further attempts to break the truce until the Great Refusal, by which point it was too late. And he sent the Wardens of his Clan into the Inner Sphere as Clan Wolf-in-Exile, under orders (penned while he was still [=ilKhan=], making it perfectly legal) to prepare to defend against a renewed Clan Invasion.
** Sun-Tzu Liao uses ObfuscatingInsanity to survive his mother Romano's court, and and to make his opponents underestimate him. When he takes the Celestial Throne of the Capellan Confederation, he immediately begins leveraging any advantage he can find, create, or invent. His thought that it would basically be a really cool prank to make it appear Victor Davion had replaced Thomas Marik's son Joshua with a BodyDouble led to the discovery that he had done exactly that, which led to all-out war in the Sarna March, the sundering of the Federated Commonwealth, and [[GodSaveUsFromTheQueen Katrina Steiner-Davion]] ruling the Lyran half unopposed for nearly a decade. Sun-Tzu may have had many of his opportunities handed to him by those seeking to manipulate him (or use him to manipulate others) but the fact he was able to capitalize on all of them, and restore territory (including the breakaway St. Ives Compact), power, and pride to people Hanse Davion had all but ground under heel a generation before makes him one of the most famous and beloved Chancellors of the Capellan Confederation in history.

Scheming his way from ignominious slavery to [[FromNobodyToNightmare rule the Dark Eldar]], Vect has shown a vicious tendency to outwit and destroy his rivals. At one point, Vect seduced the daughter of a rival Archon and had her deliver her father a box with a portable black hole inside. Graz'zt is stunningly intelligent for a demon, plotting and scheming against his fellow demon lords while seeking to take the title of Prince from Demogorgon, and is known for making deals with mortals, as well as being disturbingly charismatic to those he encounters. In one instance, Graz'zt even captured the goddess Waukeen and held her hostage in his nation of Zelatar, even using this to pervert part of her clergy to his own worship later. When he was summoned and imprisoned by the witch Iggwilv, Graz'zt seduced her, with the two having an intense love-hate relationship ever since.

** Bane, god of Strife, Tyranny and Hatred was once a [[DeityOfHumanOrigin mortal man who achieved godhood]]. A brilliant {{Chessmaster}} and [[TheStrategist strategist]] who frequently plays other gods against one another, forming and betraying alliances as proper, Bane even leaves a way to return post-mortem after his death after the Time of Troubles, being reborn from the body of his own son. Learning from his defeat, Bane promotes understanding and cooperation among his clergy who are now likely to settle conflict with reasonable debate to stay united against their enemies. Bane shows himself to be as brilliant and dangerous as ever, even subjugating the goblin pantheon to him, stopping at nothing to dominate all other powers before him.

** Mask is the god of thieves and shadows. A master of intrigue and scheming, Mask orchestrated the death of the god Bhaal during the time of Troubles with himself as the weapon in his guise as the sword godsbane. Working to undermine the mad god Cyric, Mask helped to arrange Cyric's defeat and later works to defeat his mother Shar, the goddess of nothingness and darkness. Mask helps to foil her plots to reduce all to nothingness while leaving his essence behind in anticipation for when Shar absorbs him, even sending his Chosen Erevis Cale's son into the future with a plan to bring about his own revival in the end.
** Vhaeraun, the Masked Lord, is one of the Dark Seldarine, the Drow pantheon. Wanting to conquer the surface and defeat his mother Lolth, Vhaeraun appeals to many male drow with his focus on gender equality, as opposed to his mother's fierce misandry. An exceptional schemer, Vhaeraun nearly destroyed Lolth during the Silence and upon her rebirth formed a plan to assassinate his chaotic good twin sister Eilistraee, gain her followers and destroy Lolth. Stopped by the goddess Mystra, Vhaeraun later returned and formed a peace with his sister, the two working together against their mother with Vhaeraun organizing his clergy into doing good deeds and appearing respectable, all to work to their true goals of domination and freedom for the drow, no matter the cost.
** Fzoul Chembryl, chosen of Bane, joined the Zhentarim and steadily converted it to being a branch of Bane's church. Overthrowing and destroying his mentor Manshoon and many of Manshoon's clones, Fzoul later even helped to undermine Cyric after Bane's fall. Upon Bane's return, Fzoul happily takes his place at his god's side again, reorganizing the church and devoting it to conquest and schemes to advance Bane's aims upon the world. Even after dying in defense of Zhentil Keep, Fzoul is raised as Bane's Exarch, dedicated both to his own power while retaining his charisma and faith.

* ''TabletopGame/MutantsAndMasterminds'': August Tiberius Roman is the game’s ComicBook/LexLuthor analogue, and the archenemy of the late Centurion, the setting’s greatest and most powerful superhero. Starting out as Freedom City’s most feared mafia don, Roman bought a pardon from the US government in 1943, and went onto frustrate the Centurion and the Freedom League for decades to come, first as the secret financial backer of the Crime League, and then as the city’s “Emperor of Crime.” By the 1950s and 60s, Roman controlled almost every mafioso, gangster, and street criminal in Freedom City, and was receiving a cut of near every crime committed in town, with only truly depraved organizations like Alister Usher’s falling outside his purview. This culminated in his outright buying Mayor Franklin Pierce in the 90s, and running the city in everything but name. When Pierce was brought down, he tried to take Roman with him, but the mafioso simply divested his underworld holdings and survived, broke, but free. Now retired, Roman has outlived all his allies and most of his enemies, including the Centurion, and supports himself in his old age by running the Circuit-Maximus, an illegal underground fight club featuring superhumans. [[KarmaHoudini No longer an active participant in most of the city’s criminal life, the elderly Roman is still a figure to be feared, and one that no hero or villain in their right mind aims to cross.]]

** The mysterious Cypher is a former member of the Dark Angels who supposedly fell to Chaos. Since then, Cypher roams the galaxy, pursued by his former Chapter, where he resurfaces, lures the forces of Chaos and the Space Marines into conflicts and lets them fight it out. His methods are utterly brilliant, even if his plans are inscrutable. Cypher is just as likely to hinder Chaos as the Imperium, assassinating Inquisitors, tyrants, Chaos lords and others in bold, daring manuevers before alerting the Dark Angels to his presence. Cypher will event inspire revolutions against tyrants and whenever captured, he performs bold escapes. Whatever Cypher's true plan is, it is clear he is working to an end that he's had in mind for a long time and repeatedly shows himself as nearly untouchable.
** Lukas TheTrickster, or Lukas Strifeson, is a infamous member of the Space Wolves chapter of the Space Marines. Well known for his wicked pranks, such as poisoning a superior with bloat toad venom, Lukas is known for his shocking effectiveness when deployed against the enemies of the imperium. Lukas has caused a civil war among orks with faked transmissions, lured a WAAAGH! to a planet that he then froze solid, tricked a group of Word Bearer traitor marines into landing on thin ice to drown the and has outwitted the Dark Eldar, even the infamous Aurelia Malys herself. Even after Duke Sliscus carved out one of his hearts, Lukas simply replaced it with a stasis bomb to insure whoever kills him will hear his laughter forever. Notably, Lukas has even managed to outwit Magnus the Red, Daemon Prince of Tzeentch himself, always ready with a laugh and a jest against the enemies of his Chapter.
** [[TricksterArchetype Cegorach the Laughing God]] is one of the few Eldar deities to survive the birth of Slaanesh. In the past, Cegorach even convince one C'tan god to devour others to weaken the pantheon in one of his finest schemes. Defending his followers from Slaanesh's hunger, Cegorach organizes schemes to lure the forces of Chaos into doing his work for him. One of the best schemers in all the universe, Cegorach even manages to take a hold in the Dark Eldar to potentially manipulate them, willing to stop at little to ensure the fall of Slaanesh in the end.

* ''TabletopGame/Warhammer40000'': Even in this {{Grimdark}} future, some characters are truly impressive:
** Eldrad is perhaps the most powerful Psyker the Eldar have ever produced. Having once attempted to warn the Empire about Horus's treachery, he has spent his time ever since weaving complex plans to benefit the Eldar, and has perhaps even made the entire Imperium of Man his pawns. Eldrad was responsible for several Eldar raids that produced the eventual rise of Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka and the Armageddon Wars, solely so Eldrad could ensure 10,000 Eldar escaped death at the cost of millions of humans. Eldrad frequently conducts daring plots and schemes to benefit his race, even to ensure the eventual triumph of a new god of the Eldar to defeat Chaos and save his race's souls from Slaanesh.
** Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, the Beast of the Apocalypse is the most successful Ork warboss in history. The self-proclaimed Prophet of the WAAAAGH!, Ghazghkull puts together daring crusade after daring crusade, bringing new advancements to the orks and being a tactical genius even by the standards of other races. Ghazghkull has become a blight on the Imperium, leaving whole worlds burning behind him and constantly outwitting all enemies save for only Comissar Sebastian Yarrick, the one human Ghazghkull [[WorthyOpponent truly respects]]. Ghazghkull frequently inspires other Orks with his sheer charisma and force of will, planning on bringing out a war so great that his deities Gork and Mork come to join the fun personally.
** Azhek Ahriman is the mortal champion of Tzeentch. A former member of the Thousand Sons Legion, Ahriman is driven to save his legion and [[SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong correct all his past mistakes]] by overthrowing Tzeentch himself and [[AGodAmI becoming a new God]]. To his end, Ahriman is a brilliant schemer, crafting and "seeding" new cults on a myriad of worlds to find and approach new knowledge while manipulating entire new conflicts so he can swoop in, take all their work and bring himself closer to the Black Library and Tzeentch's true name. Time and again, Ahriman demonstrates why he is worthy of being the champion of the Changer of Ways.
** Trazyn the Infinite is an ingenious Necron, who is equal to any of the great Phaerons in wit and skill. A [[CollectorOfTheStrange collector of rare, historical things and people]], Trazyn frequently outwits others to steal things for his collection. Trazyn performs daring heists and uses his fellow Necron lords as body doubles for himself without informing them, manipulating events so he can benefit. When Abaddon launched his 13th Black Crusade on Cadia, Trazyn even joined in on the side of the Imperium, wanting to play the hero [[ItAmusedMe for fun]], and also to steal Abaddon himself for his collection, though he decided to make due with the Lord Castellan of Cadia instead. Trazyn is even banned from the Necron throne worlds due to his habit of [[StickyFingers stealing their priceless artifacts]], a ban he is well aware of and flaunts for fun whenever the mood takes him.
** Asdrubael Vect is the evil [[EvilOverlord Lord of Commoragh]], the master of the Dark Eldar. In another instance, Vect seized a Salamanders cruiser to lure in the Space Marines against his rivals, letting them be wiped out in the fighting to solidify his own authority. In his most daring move, Vect even [[FakingTheDead faked his death]] when a rebellion occurred and then proceeded to drop a miniature sun to wipe out the rebels and anyone in their area, making himself the undisputed master of the Dark Eldar once more.
** Lady Aurelian Malys is a ruthless Dark Eldar and the Archon of the Kabal of the Poisoned Tongue. Once banished by her former lover Asdrubael Vect, Malys has returned to Comorragh where she proves herself Vect's equal in scheming, amassing an exceptional power base and working to undermine her former paramour to seize his position. Malys once initiated a war between humans and orks to steal an STC known as the Panacea, solely to keep it in her room and deny humanity the chance to cure any disease. Since returning to Comorragh, Malys has shown an uncanny ability to detect Vect's schemes and was one of the few Archons to survive his plotting, with it being whispered that if Vect ever falls, Malys is sure to be the one holding the knife.
** Duke Traevelliath Sliscus is a wicked Dark Eldar corsair known as "The Serpent". Bored with the decadent courts of Comorragh, Sliscus stole the ships of several Archons, fooled them into coming out to fight him and summarily destroyed their forces. A feared pirate lord, Sliscus's daring exploits have made him a legend to many of the Dark Eldar, and he frequently performs incredible, daring raids, notably being the only opponent to get the better of the infamous Lukas the Trickster by catching him, cutting out his heart and throwing him from his airlock. Well known for how he presents himself, Malys once described Sliscus as "amoral, despicable and impeccably dressed in the bargain".

* Prince Lucanor Giovanni from ''TabletopGame/AnimaBeyondFantasy'' certainly qualifies. He is effectively the second smartest person in the entire setting, second only to his brilliant but insane mentor. Despite being a normal human in a setting full of supernatural beings and super powered individuals he remains one of the most major political players in the setting due to his near [[TheOmniscient omniscient]] ability to deduct what everyone else is up to. He actively manipulates almost every other side in the setting without them realizing it.
* ''TabletopGame/BattleTech'':
** Hanse Davion. While he reshaped military thinking within his life, he will probably best be remembered for his acts of Magnificent Bastardry. The first being where he ordered the court martial, exile and stripping of name from the son of his Intelligence Secretary - and best friend - as a part of an elaborate ruse to plant him into another state's intelligence network. So successful was this gambit that in the subsequent war (Which Hanse started ''at his own wedding'') he captured more worlds in two years of fighting then his predecessors had in the last two hundred, all but crippling the state he targeted and driving its leader to insanity. Why did he do it? As an act of revenge against said leader who had tried to kill Hanse and replace him with a doppleganger. And to create a comfortably-sized interstellar transit bridge between his realm and that of his bride's (who was heir to another successor state herself). For his magnificent bastardry, he earned the appelation "The Fox" (also alluding to his red hair).
** Ulric Kerensky. Even when introduced as 'merely' the Khan of Clan Wolf, he already comes across as this; once voted into the position of ilKhan of all the Clans and forced to ''lead'' an invasion he's vehemently opposed to [[note]]he espoused the "Warden" clan philosophy, as opposed to the more militant "Crusader" philosophy[[/note]], he manages to ever-so-subtly sabotage it without ever committing an outright act of treason (most notably by playing on the fatuity of the other leaders and letting them get hoist by their own petards when they're too full of themselves to ask for advice or instructions), ultimately culminating in a fifteen-year truce -- and then, when later challenged over it, sets into motion a plan to cripple the Clan pushing the hardest to resume the invasion while making sure part of his ''own'' Clan survives to keep defending the Inner Sphere in the future (and also greatly culling the Crusader-minded elements of Clan Wolf), even though it will cost his own life among others. Throughout it all and even posthumously he's never depicted as being anything less than completely in control and on top of events.
** Sun-Tzu Liao. He turned his crippled state (courtesy of Hanse Davion above) around in the space of a few years, abused his elected position as the new First Lord of the reborn Star League to allow his nation to legally annex a breakaway state, reclaimed more than half the territory his grandfather lost under the pretense of "Peacekeeping" operations and forged a three-way alliance amongst other disaffected nations. There's (circumstantial) evidence that he even nuked his own capitol to serve as a propaganda piece to provoke hatred of his enemies. In the end [[spoiler: he fakes his own death to ascend to the level of godhood in the eyes of his people]]. In many ways he acts like Hanse Davion, and he noted that he was using techniques he had learned from studying Davion.
* ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'': Any high-ranking inhabitant of the Lower Planes counts. This is especially true for Archdevils, considering the Infernal hierarchy seems to be built on ChronicBackstabbingDisorder.
** [[SatanicArchetype Asmodeus]], ruler of Nessus, Ninth Layer of [[{{Hell}} Baator]]. He is one of the oldest living things in the multiverse, controlling all of the Nine Hells and standing over every other devil. The gods fear him. He once instigated the Reckoning, an EnemyCivilWar, just to root out the more dangerous of his foes... only to promptly step forward and force all of Baator to submit once it stopped being useful to him. His only reaction to [[TheStarscream Mephistopheles]] threatening to take his throne was an amused silence.\\
\\
His most epic moment was when he first came to rule the Hells, when the Gods sent him to punish those who had sinned, signing a contract to say that Asmodeus could do as he wanted with those souls. Shortly thereafter, the Gods noticed that rather fewer mortals were coming to their planes when they died, and more were going to Hell. They soon found out Asmodeus was deliberately tempting mortals to sin, and confronted him, saying that the contract did not give him permission to tempt mortals. He simply smiled at the gods, and said "ReadTheFinePrint."\\
\\
To add to Asmodeus's levels of magnificence, he is one of the few gods in ''Pathfinder'' that came directly from D&D, holds the key to the cage of a world eating god, and has a contract with all the other gods stating that they won't attack him, and in return, he won't open the cage.
** '[[TheStarscream Mephistopheles]] can be pretty magnificent'. He rules the Eighth Hell, a frozen realm called Cania. After the Reckoning, he settled into his throne to brood while his court carried on around him, his voice only heard on the whispering winds until it seemed Mephistopheles had frozen in place. One of his court, Baron Molikroth, staged a coup against Mephistopheles and brought all his co-conspirators together in triumph. At which point Molikroth revealed he was just a false persona Mephistopheles wore, that his centuries of silence had been a cover as he tapped into the hidden power of hellfire (so hot it could even burn devils), and proceeded to scourge his court of all traitors. And this is only one of his more recent grand schemes, given one has to be quite the schemer to take and hold any of the Nine Hells in the first place, much less one of the deeper ones.
** [[ThePerfectionist Baalzebul]], Lord of the Flies and ruler of Hell's seventh layer, Maladomini. Baalzebul was almost as magnificent as Asmodeus himself. He was a former angel who went to hell and did such a good job taking over that he completely removed all [[UnPerson knowledge of his predecessor's name and identity from existence]]. He managed to control ''two'' levels of Hell, one himself and one through a viceroy, Moloch. Add to that, he actually had Asmodeus' favor. Unfortunately for Baalzebul, during that civil war he led an insurrection that tried to take Asmodeus down. He was thwarted when Mephistopheles' troops turned on the insurrection, and then Asmodeus punished him by changing his form from that of an angel to that of a slug. Baalzebul's still the #3 guy in Hell (behind Asmodeus and Mephistopheles), but looking like a slug demotes him from MagnificentBastard to TheChessmaster.
** The Demon Lord, Dagon. Like other Demons, he is ChaoticEvil. ''Unlike'' other Demons however, he is intelligent, rational, and above all, ''patient''. He is reported to be the first Demon Lord spawned from the Abyss, and uses his vast knowledge to manipulate the minds of mortals and demons alike. Oh, and his alliance with Demogorgon, which makes him seem like TheDragon? It's heavily implied that their alliance is [[DragonWithAnAgenda part of a greater scheme in Dagon's benefit]], and in fact he plays a big role in the continuing feud between Demogorgon's SplitPersonality issue. (He only speaks to one of Demogorgon's two minds when giving advice.). Finally, if you look at him, you become terrified of the sea. Did we forget to mention that Dagon lives at the bottom of an Abyssal ocean? ''His very existence insulates him from retribution.''
** Graz'zt has about the same traits of intelligence and patience as Dagon, which let him control not one, but ''three'' layers. He managed to trick a goddess of wealth and trapped her, and he continues to survive even after her subsequent escape. He also manages to manipulate other demon lords like Yeenoghu into fighting his battles for him without drawing attention to himself.
** The ''entire race'' of Yugoloths are would-be Magnificent Bastards. Not would-be as in {{Smug Snake}}s, would-be as in it's tough to be remarkably magnificent when everyone else thinks and plots just like you do. Less well known than the Devils and Demons, they're NeutralEvil as opposed to LawfulEvil like the Devils or ChaoticEvil like the Demons. The Yugoloths' main stronghold is The Crawling City, a city grafted onto legs that walks around the mountains of Gehenna. Prophecies say that the Blood War will only end once the Crawling City directly intervenes in it.\\
** 'Lolth. She may seem insane but like Tzeentch, she is either that or very sane. She favors chaos and looks out for too much cooperation between drow but at the same time, she makes certain that they do not cause too much chaos. She looks on those who cause chaos in normal drow society with favor [[spoiler: and she doesn't limit herself to evil ones, at that]]. She also orchestrated [[spoiler:the deaths of several of her own children, to ensure that she'd remain as the sole deity of the drow, also being one of the main factors that could have lead to the Spellplague]]. When she went silent to the drow prayers for a long time, she used this time to [[spoiler:reestablish herself as a new greater deity, moving the Demonweb Pits away from the Abyss and confirm it as its own plane of existence]].
* ''TabletopGame/{{Exalted}}''. Brem Marst, after having an epiphany whereby he realised that even the mightiest supernatural beings were reliant on trade and finance one way or another, and that an appropriately enterprising group could use this need to secure themselves and profit immensely, conned every last penny out of a bunch of [[CargoCult Cargo Cults]], used the money to buy into a network of merchants and manufacturers, and had them take advantage of local political instability to found [[NGOSuperpower the Guild]] and establish the guiding principles that made it the second most powerful organisation in the world. Even after dying, Marst was committed to his own fortunes; he leveraged his connections in the Guild (particularly the worship they could offer him in exchange for protection and their information networks) into becoming the fastest rising anacreon in the history of the Timeless Order of Manacle and Coin. Not bad for a mortal.

* The ''TabletopGame/FreedomCity'' campaign setting for ''TabletopGame/MutantsAndMasterminds'' has August Tiberius Roman, old-school mafioso-turned-supervillain and {{archenemy}} of The Centurion, the setting's analogue for Superman. An elder statesman of supervillainy, Roman got his start during the GoldenAge and remains a going concern in UsefulNotes/{{the Modern Age|of Comic Books}}, having only semiretired despite being well into his nineties. He's never been convicted, and has easily made the transition from TheDon to supervillain backer to "Emperor of Crime", to propriotor of an underground fight club ring. He's never had a setback he couldn't recover from, and even in his old age, bereft of his criminal empire, he remains a potent force in the underworld. Couple that with his expert planning, skill as a manipulator, and sense of style, and the fact that for sixty years he managed to vex an immortal near PhysicalGod despite his own ever advancing age, and you have an archetypal MB.
* ''TabletopGame/LegendOfTheFiveRings'' has the Scorpion Clan, which basically trains every single member from birth to try to live up to this trope, with a frightening degree of success. However, while the Scorpion Clan might specialize in it (and get the most attention for it), just about every major organization in the setting has a good half-dozen or so examples that qualify. Of course, there's also the [[AncientConspiracy Kolat]], who tend to be as magnificently bastardy as the Scorpion Clan but for entirely different reasons. That is, until the Scorpion Clan found the Kolat's [[SupervillainLair secret hideout]] and, in a surprisingly unsubtle but extremely effective maneuver, sent in a crack team of killers to wipe out as many Kolat as possible and stole the Kolat's [[CrystalBall magic scrying device]] that they needed to remain the [[PalantirPloy super-secret all-knowing conspiracy]], thus giving the Scorpion Clan a monopoly on Magnificient Bastardry within the Empire.
** Incredibly, the overwhelming majority of Scorpions avoid slipping into SmugSnake or [[LawfulStupidChaoticStupid Chaotic Stupid]] territory, despite effectively having a giant banner reading [[RefugeInAudacity "We are untrustworthy and will compulsively backstab any and all who deal with us in any way whatsoever"]] as their clan emblem.
*** Mostly because one of the most common tactics for a good Scorpion is to pretend to be a DefectorFromDecadence or some similar type - basically convincing their marks that they're not like the rest of the OBVIOUSLY untrustworthy Scorpion Clan, they're different, honest! Also, despite being Magnificent Bastards, most have as the goal of their schemes 1 ) Personal power and glory; 2 ) The survival of the Scorpion Clan; and 3 ) The survival of the Empire. They may be nasty sons of guns, but they're still (mostly) loyal.
*** Also, the ones who aren't pretending to be DefectorFromDecadence instead just master [[BatmanGambit Batman Gambits]], by being trustworthy when you expect them to be untrustworthy. The Scorpion book is basically a guide to how to follow this trope.
* Nicol Bolas of ''TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering'' is slowly becoming one. The oldest being in the multiverse, he successfully manipulated other planeswalkers into sacrificing themselves to fix universes, as well as having deceived [[CloserToEarth Sarkhan Vol]] into becoming his stooge and awaken the [[EldritchAbomination Eldrazi]] for a yet-to-be-revealed scheme. He's such a MagnificentBastard that he bullied, coaxed, or conned the designers to give him a card that, for raw power (though probably not game-breaking effectiveness like Jace), is probably stronger than any other Planeswalker yet printed.
-->''Did we put some juice into Bolas's design? Yes. Will this be cause for some complaints? Yes, it will. "But +3 loyalty every turn, and starting at 5, make him way too hard to kill." Yeah, too bad. It's Nicol Bolas. "But blue, black, and red aren't supposed to destroy enchantments." Yeah, too bad. It's Nicol Bolas. "But a Control Magic every turn is too much card advantage, even for eight mana. And even if you say he's not supposed to create immediate concessions, his ultimate is basically game over." Yeah, too bad. Deal with it, folks, '''it's Nicol Bolas!'''''
** [[http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/sf/33a In one article]], written in character, Nicol Bolas actively encourage players to cheat whenever possible, saying that it wasn't against the rules as long as you don't get caught. Of course a bastard as magnificent as he could never be caught.
*** Actually, Bolas points out that cheating, while a path to assured victory, is also the least reliable. A bastard as magnificent as he can screw you over perfectly fine ''without even bending the rules.''
** [[InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons Niv-Mizzet]] of Ravnica also fits this trope, along with Ral Zarek to a lesser extent.
** It's also the aim of most players who use [[ColorCodedForYourConvenience Blue.]]
* The ''TabletopGame/NewWorldOfDarkness'' sourcebook ''Mirrors'' includes the Merit "[[InvokedTrope Magnificent Bastard]]", which means that a character suffers from no situational penalties for attempts to Sway others (i.e. no matter how guarded a person is due to warning, previous betrayal, or catching the character in a compromising position, the character will always find a way to get in with them).

* Duke Rowan Darkwood, factol of the Fated in ''TabletopGame/{{Planescape}}''. Where to begin? His backstory is that, after retiring from a successful career in adventuring, he successfully out-cheated a devil in a card game for the souls of his family, then spent the next decade being tortured in the pits of {{Hell}}, before being released on the grounds that he was too tough to be fun torturing anymore. Upon arrival in Sigil, he took over one of the city's most powerful factions in under a month, persuaded the leader of the [[KnightTemplar Mercykillers]] faction to team up with him, and immediately began plotting to conquer the entire city. After setting off the Faction War and eventually being defeated, he became one of only three known people in recorded history to escape from one of [[PowersThatBe the Lady of Pain's]] [[MobileMaze Mazes]].
** Faction War, however, makes you wonder if Darkwood managed to escaped the Mazes only ''because'' the Lady of Pain wanted him to [[spoiler: in order to create one of the biggest [[StableTimeLoop Time Loops]] in D&D history --- warping him 500 years in the past to become Gifad and end the Faction War he ''started'', and then ages in the past when he naturally fails... into the very wizard who would craft the Sigil Spell that would prompt Darkwood to start the Faction War in the first place! As is a recurring theme in Planescape, it goes to show him that [[YouCantFightFate he can't fight fate]]...]]
* ''TabletopGame/{{Ravenloft}}'' setting:
** The Dark Powers can be Magnificently Bastard-ish when tormenting their darklord captives, playing off weaknesses and hang-ups that the darklords won't even admit they have. Many fans of the setting remain convinced that the [=DPs=] are on the side of the angels, simply because it's ''villains'' whom they're hassling with such expertise. The fact that they work in secret rather than stepping onstage doesn't disqualify them from this trope, as their resulting mystique more than makes up for it.
** Some of the domain lords, themselves, also qualify. Azalin, Harkon Lukas, and Strahd von Zarovich probably rate highest in fan admiration for their scheming, as does the non-darklord Gentleman Caller.
* Cleon Zhunastu, founder of the Third Imperium in ''TabletopGame/{{Traveller}}''. He actually did better than Palpatine because his Empire lasted for more then a thousand years. He manipulated dozens of powerful men and thousands of planets into forming the Third Imperium.
* Tzeentch of ''TabletopGame/{{Warhammer 40000}}'' is a literal god of scheming who lays plans that take millennia to pay off. Whilst we're in the same universe, the Alpha Legion are, most terrifyingly, an entire army of Magnificent Bastards, even before the Horus Heresy (with the exception of [[VideoGame/DawnOfWar Bale and Carron]], but [[{{Narm}} we don't talk about them]]).
** Tzeentch is probably enjoying it. He is literally the god of scheming. He cares not whether the schemes will work or not. He finds it very amusing to mislead his own followers to fulfill his own, incredibly far-reaching plans, and his own plans tend to be contradictory and ultimately nonsensical. In fact, despite what he might want you to believe, he doesn't have any ultimate goal other than scheming itself, because if he actually ''won'' he would vanish from existence upon reaching total victory, as his whole purpose is to scheme.
*** One of the problems of the 40k setting is that in all the canon fiction set in the 41st millennium era (in the universe's present) is that if the Imperium is involved then they will end up either winning or at least surviving, which means that all of the huge and vastly convoluted plans that we get to hear about are pretty much doomed to failure [[StatusQuoIsGod by narrative convention]]. This normally happens by the Space Marines (or whoever) headbutting their way out of the trap even against absurd odds that even by the universes own standards should be impossible. Thus, Tzeentch and his followers never get to show off just how good their schemes are. They are definitely supposed to be magnificent bastards, particularly with Magnus following his own weird agendas rather than the general Chaos "go and murder stuff" manifesto. Sadly, we only ever get to see them fail and that takes some of the punch away.
** The Thousand Sons Legion, whose meticulous planning runs for centuries, every detail mapped out, completely flawless... [[TooDumbToFool until the Space Wolves show up, kick their teeth in]], [[ObfuscatingStupidity then laugh at all the effort Tzeentch put into those plans]]. Unless, of course, Tzeentch just enjoys watching Magnus the Red and co suffer. The Space Wolves, a whole army of [[SpannerInTheWorks Spanners In The Works]], keep the Thousand Sons from ever becoming 'proper' Magnificent Bastards.
** The Alpha Legion. Contrary to the Thousand Sons' meticulous planning over the years (which gets screwed up anyway), Alpha Legionnaires are trained to think for themselves and to [[XanatosSpeedChess improvise in the heat of battle.]] Their combat doctrines include multiple strikes at various enemy weak points at the same time, using cultist regiments that are well-trained instead of mere cannon fodder, and [[CombatPragmatist fighting dirty when push comes to shove.]] In an event following Literature/HorusHeresy, the Ultramarines clashed with the Alpha Legion and [[DidntSeeThatComing managed to catch them off-guard]] by deploying their best strike force directly to the Alpha Legion's command center. Despite managing to destroy the Alpha Legion's central command which included their Primarch, the Alpha Legion managed to keep their cool and coordination under the circumstances. Using various tactics such as ambush, traps and FalseFlagOperation, they managed to almost completely obliterate the remaining Ultramarine force, forcing the Ultramarines to retreat hastily and their Primarch remarking that he "has no interest in a righteous war against such a dishonorable foe"
*** Their magnificent bastardy is enhanced by the fact that that story may well not be true - the only source for it is an Inquisitor who was later revealed to be an Alpha Legion spy.
*** Or it might be true, and the story of the Inquisitors treason be the disinformation. When you are dealing with the Hydra Legion, it's almost impossible to tell.
** The latest Dark Eldar codex is full of them:
*** Asdrubael Vect, overlord of the Dark Eldar city of Comorragh. He actually engineered a Space Marine inavasion of said city when he was a lowly kabal leader to remove the more powerful rival kabals. Since his ascension, he has always been two steps ahead of everyone else in the insanely byzantine politics of the place for over seven millenia. He has risen from seducing noblewomen into assassinating their annoying parents to delivering actual black holes in gift boxes to retainers that were barely starting to consider challenging him.
::: His backstory in the Dark Eldar codex is basically one long CrowningMomentOfAwesome. Bear in mind, he [[RagsToRiches started out as a]] ''[[RagsToRiches slave.]]''
*** Lady Aurelia Malys, Archon of the Kabal of the Poisoned Tongue is certainly one of the queens of Magnificent Bitch-dom. She started out as a courtesan of Asdrubael Vect, but when he got tired of her, he banished her. She took her followers with her, and journeyed into the Webway, seeking fortune. She bumped into a god-like trickster being (heavily implied to be the Laughing God) and ''beat it in a game of wits''. As a reward, she got its sword and its heart (she then cut out her own heart and replaced it with the new one). She is now carving a (perfect) figure in society and, if Vect ever falls, she'll be the one holding the knife. Oh, and she stole a heavily guarded STC machine from the Imperium [[ForTheEvulz just because she could.]]
*** Prince Sliscus, the arch-pirate. He stole three Archons' flagships just to show off, and defeated them when they tried to get them back. His pirate fleet is one of the largest in the galaxy, and he is a MemeticBadass in ''Comorragh'' - a city of the most evil and twisted murderers possible. Lady Malys, herself a Magnificent Bitch, described him as "amoral, despicable, [[BadassInANiceSuit and impeccably dressed.]]"
*** One of the basic requirements to be a Dark Eldar Archon is to be a mild Magnificent Bastard, as the entire race as a whole is plagued with a serious case of ChronicBackstabbingDisorder. Keeping three or four steps ahead of your own servants is apparently as common as breathing for many archons.
** The C'Tan Deceiver. He works on the same level as Tzeentch, playing the other races of the galaxy, including the Necrons themselves, against each other for his own benefit.
** On the subject of divine masters of the various Gambit tropes, there's Cegorach, the Laughing God. He was the only Eldar god to fully survive the birth of Slaanesh (Isha was captured by Chaos, and Khaine was shattered and can only live on through his avatars), and remains the mastermind behind many of the Eldar's most complicated and successful schemes. Arguably fits into the GuileHero trope as well, but many a being that qualifies as a "hero" by 40k standards would be hardly better than a villain in most other settings.
*** It's worth noting that the example of Lady Aurelia Malys Magnificent Bitchery (given under Dark Eldar above) could easily be a deliberate act by the Laughing God to plant Anaris where it needs to be and forge a connection with Malys for some other, even more magnificent, bastardry. It's a case of dueling bastardry, and it's yet to be shown who managed to one-up the other.
*** Before WordOfGod explicitly disproved it, there were a number of in-universe hints that the Deceiver and the Laughing God are one entity of unheard bastardy proportion.
** So there I was, adding Cadian commander Ursarkar E. Creed to the Magnificent Bastard page, when I realized that my keyboard wasn't actually a keyboard. It was, in fact, a picture of a keyboard drawn on the toe of a [[HumongousMecha Warhound Titan]], which proceeded to devastate much of the city. How could a 15-meter-tall war machine just show up out of nowhere like that?! [[MemeticMutation Why, you'd have to have some sort of Tactical Genius special rule to...]] [[SkywardScream CREEEEEED!!!]]
** One interpretation of Cypher would mark him as this. On the surface he seems to be an enemy of the Imperium. Everything Cypher does basically goes off without a hitch, then he leaves right after drawing Imperial forces hunting him to a group of enemies Cypher was supposed to be "helping." Cypher being in this trope does depend highly on his motivations though.
*** It doesn't really matter what interpretation you like, Cypher definitely has the magnificent bastard base stats. He has his own secret shadowy goal, he's smart enough to have wandered the cosmos for eons furthering that agenda without being caught, he's manipulative enough to con anyone around him into murder if he wants, and charismatic enough to worm his way into various factions around the galaxy, so he definitely fits the trope.
** Erebus. He corrupted not one but TWO Primarchs, both his own, Lorgar, and Horus; convinced Horus that the Emperor was his enemy by endearing himself to the Luna Wolves Legion and was able to get Horus to trust him over his brother Magnus the Red; he helped plan the Istvaan Massacre and taught Horus everything he knows of Chaos. During the battle of Calth he used his own forces as a distraction to cast a powerful ritual that made warp travel near impossible throughout the Imperium and prevented communication, so that Horus's treachery would remain secret for longer and the Loyalist forces could not strategize with each other long-range. If it weren't for Erebus the Horus Heresy would never have happened; he is responsible for the crapsack state of the 40k galaxy. And to make him even more magnificent he survives the Heresy and goes on to be one of the two most powerful figures in the Word Bearers legion, possibly one of the most powerful warriors alive, and is still a Magnificent Bastard; he and Kor Phaeron using the entire Legion in a civil war as part of a game between them that in Erebus's own words "means nothing", a war which his side won, and possibly planning Abaddon the Despoiler's downfall as his next move. Truly a more Magnificent Bastard has never lived, one that ruined a galaxy just to gain power.
** The entire Craftworld Eldar race was originally this due to heavy reliance on future precognition and literally zero compassion towards lesser races. They knowingly started two wars for Armageddon that cost Imperium billions of lives and will probably cost even more in the future only to save some dozens of their brethren. Eldrad, the most powerful and ancient Farseer, has a number of fanfics that take this to MementicMutation status. It is an easy to forget seeing as they drift toward ButtMonkey status in current codices.
* Khazrak the One-eye, a beastmen leader from ''TabletopGame/WarhammerFantasy''. A ruthlessly efficient beastmen who uses simple yet effective ambushing tactics. He has a rather one-sided FriendlyEnemy relationship with the count of Middleland and really believes in an eye for an eye. Even though the count sends knights, soldiers and mercenaries his way, and has put a price of a whopping 10,000 gold pieces on his head, Khazrak keeps one-upping everyone he meets (and even if he somehow gets caught, he will escape and exact revenge on whoever caught him). The fact that he's from a race that's not too good when it comes to smarts is just icing on the cake.

* Prince Lucanor Giovanni from TabletopGame/AnimaBeyondFantasy certainly qualifies.

To add to Asmodeus's levels of magnificence, he is one of the few gods in Pathfinder that came directly from D&D, holds the key to the cage of a world eating god, and has a contract with all the other gods stating that they won't attack him, and in return, he won't open the cage.
** The aforementioned [[TheStarscream Mephistopheles]] can be pretty magnificent as well.

Asmodeus knows every plot against him by the other archdevils and delights in thwarting or subverting them to his own benefit while making his own plots that can take centuries or even millennia to come to fruition in ways that benefit him. Jarlaxle is so successful and talented at his games that there are those who wonder if he is actually blessed by the normally virulently misandrist Lolth as a chosen of chaos.

Of course a bastard as magnificent as he could never be caught.
*** Actually, Bolas points out that cheating, while a path to assured victory, is also the least reliable. A bastard as magnificent as he can screw you over perfectly fine ''without even bending the rules.''

* ''TabletopGame/{{Pathfinder}}'':
** Admiral Druvalia Thrune is the BigBad of the ''Skull & Shackles'' Adventure Path, TheWomanBehindTheMan to Captain Barnabas Harrigan, and the source, directly or indirectly, of all the misery experienced by the player characters. Determined to escape the accusation that her career has been advanced by {{nepotism}} alone, Druvalia uses her catspaw, Harrigan to undermine the Shackles' defenses, while her great-uncle's vast wealth enables her to finance a private armada, which her [[DealWithTheDevil deal with the archdevil Geryon]] enables her to sail through the Eye of Abendego and strike at the Hurricane King's domains. With only the players even aware that her invasion is about to take place, and the support of one of the rulers of Hell, Druvalia seems to hold a winning hand, and if the [=PC=]s do not bring their best game, she is easily capable of running the table and reducing the Shackles to a Chelish colony.
** General Azaersi of the ''Ironfang Invasion'' Adventure Path is a brilliant and overambitious hobgoblin general who dreams of building a new homeland for her people atop the bickering human nations of Nirmathas and Molthune. Recruiting dozens of Molthune's monstrous mercenary regiments to her service, securing the alliance of the dark naga Zanathura, the greater barghest Azlowe, and the legendary dragonslayer Kraelos, and rallying hobgoblins from across the continent and beyond, Azaersi builds her Ironfang Legion into one of the deadliest fighting forces in Avistan, and with the aid of a powerful magical artifact, is able to deploy them wherever she sees fit. Rendered all but invincible in the field, Azaersi overruns most of Nirmathas and a large part of Molthune, with the players the only ones who are able to even check her. Unable to best her army in the field, the [=PC=]s will likely have to resort to a decapitation strike to remove Azaersi from the head of the Legion—unless they can present her with evidence of treachery from her comrades, in which case, much to their surprise, they may find themselves negotiating a reasonable peace with the hobgoblin [[TheGeneralissimo generalissimo]].

* Hanse Davion from ''TabletopGame/BattleTech''.
** While on the subject of ''[=BattleTech=]'', let us not forget Ulric Kerensky.
** Also Sun-Tzu Liao. He turned his crippled state (courtesy of Hanse Davion above) around in the space of a few years, abused his elected position as the new First Lord of the reborn Star League to allow his nation to legally annex a breakaway state, reclaimed more than half the territory his grandfather lost under the pretense of "Peacekeeping" operations and forged a three-way alliance amongst other dissafected nations.

* Cyric in TabletopGame/ForgottenRealms. [[ObfuscatingStupidity Pretends]] to hold the IdiotBall for almost ten years, but ends up getting exactly what he wanted and manipulates almost the entire pantheon of Greater Gods and ends the love of an Established Couple. He eventually KILLS one of the most powerful goddesses in the entire Realms through some XanatosSpeedChess between he and another Greater Evil God. He also convinces an EldritchAbomination to work for him and seals his loyalty so much that the thing is still loyal to him to this day. This guy puts the "bastard" in MagnificentBastard.
** His losing the Realm of the Dead was apparently intentional. Cyric never intended to rule over death. He enjoyed chaos and tricks far too much to waste time on judging the damned. It's possible Cyric set up the whole thing so he would end up losing the Realm of the Dead and be able to take his true place in Pandemonium, where he is far, FAR more powerful than he was in the Realm of the Dead. Cyric is also quite capable of playing XanatosSpeedChess, as evidenced in the novels where he DOES ALL OF THE ABOVE MENTIONED THINGS! If Cyric isn't a magnificent bastard, no one is. Oh, and he also tricked Tyr, the FREAKIN GOD OF JUSTICE (the BigGood) into murdering another good god out of jealousy that Cyric managed to stir up using his lies and tricks. No wonder he is currently in chains somewhere. But it took three greater gods just to put him in chains in the first place. Methinks Cyric won't be in those chains for long.

* Hanse Davion from ''TabletopGame/BattleTech''. While he reshaped military thinking within his life, he will probably best be remembered for his acts of Magnificent Bastardry. Don't forget that with the update to 4th Edition his status went from merely a powerful archdevil that required a full team of high level epic characters to fight into a full god.\\

** Asmodeus' first Starscream was Baalzebul, Lord of the Flies.
** Another example is the Demon Lord Dagon.
** Much like Dagon, Graz'zt has the same traits of intelligence and patience, which let him control not one, but ''three'' layers. He managed to trick a goddess of wealth and trapped her, and he continues to survive even after her subsequent escape. He also manages to manipulate other demon lords like Yeenoghu into fighting his battles for him without drawing attention to himself.

Indentation issues + Examples Are Not Arguable. Magnificent Bastard is YMMV and therefore arguable already; we do not need any further emphasis.

* Asmodeus, ruler of Nessus, Ninth Layer of Baator in ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons''. His only reaction to [[TheStarscream Mephistopheles]] threatening to take his throne was an amused silence.
** His most epic moment was likely when he first came to rule the Hells, when the Gods sent him to punish those who had sinned, signing a contract to say that Asmodeus could do as he wanted with those souls. Shortly thereafter, the Gods noticed that rather fewer mortals were coming to their planes when they died, and more were going to Hell. They soon found out Asmodeus was deliberately tempting mortals to sin, and confronted him, saying that the contract did not give him permission to tempt mortals. He simply smiled at the gods, and said "ReadTheFinePrint."

** The ''entire race'' of Yugoloths are would-be Magnificent Bastards. Not would-be as in smug snakes, would-be as in it's tough to be remarkably magnificent when everyone else thinks and plots just like you do. * The Dark Powers of the ''TabletopGame/{{Ravenloft}}'' setting can be Magnificently Bastard-ish when tormenting their darklord captives, playing off weaknesses and hang-ups that the darklords won't even admit they have.

There's (circumstantial) evidence that he even nuked his own capitol to serve as a propaganda piece to provoke hatred of his enemies. Throughout it all and even posthumously he's never depicted as being anything less than completely in control and on top of events.
