* CliffhangerCopout: The first book ends with a quote from a fairy tale told by Sarima earlier in the book: “And there the wicked old Witch stayed for a good long time.” “And did she ever come out?” “Not yet.” This seems to imply that Elphaba will, somehow, return in a future installment. But ultimately, three sequels later and even a seemingly foreshadowing remark from WordOfGod that "a witch will always come back," Elphaba is apparently gone for good.

No Pronunciation Guide is now a disambig. Dewicking

* NoPronunciationGuide: We're never told how "Animal" is pronounced differently than "animal" but apparently characters can tell the difference between the words.
** [[MathematiciansAnswer Probably]] the same way we can tell the difference between man and Man(kind).

** [[spoiler: Elphaba having a torn-out page from the Grimmerie on her person during her audience with the Wizard late in the book (and which he confiscates). In the larger context of the Wicked Cycle, this ends up having ''massive'' long-term repercussions for Oz, Liir, and others over the remaining three books.

* AluminumChristmasTrees: In this continuity, it's suggested that the word "Winkie" is actually a FantasticSlur for the people of the Western region of Oz, which is properly called the "Vinkus"; due to the racism against the people of the Vinkus, however, it's so commonly used that most people think it's ''actually'' what they're called. Unfortunately, this phenomenon isn't unknown in RealLife: the words "Eskimo" and "Gypsy" are considered pejorative terms for the Inuit and Romani people, but they're used so frequently that many people assume (incorrectly) that those people are actually called that.
