* BadassLonghair: Kieran. When Ash first sees him, he looks like a DreadlockWarrior, but he actually ''does'' wash and comb it when he has the option. It's still a yard long and earns him the nickname (from one [[ToDumbToLive prison bully]]) of the "Hair Farmer."

* BarbarianLonghair: Kieran's dreadlocks initially seem like this to Ash. It probably helps that Kieran kills a guy with one kick within a few minutes of Ash and Kieran's first meeting. In reality, Kieran would rather have washed hair, although it's still long enough to get him called "Hair Farmer" (and he still makes a habit of [[BadassLonghair killing people]]).

* AGodAmI: Delan and [[spoiler: his reincarnation, Thelyan]].

* Room101: Where prisoners at Churchrock are taken for "surveys," AKA mind rapes.

* HitmanWithAHeart: Kieran spends part of the book as an unrepentant murderer for hire, but that's before he encounters the magical power of love. If you've read the back cover, the result isn't much of a surprise. (In Kieran's defense, he was a SonOfAWhore, an orphan, and an abused prison inmate before turning to assassination as a career in his teens.)
