* TwoferTokenMinority: Lacey is Black, though it's only mentioned briefly once near the end (mostly she's simply vaguely described as “dark-skinned”). She's the only person of color identified among the characters who is in more than just one scene.

* NoBisexuals: Everyone asks Lena whether she's gay at first when they see her being attracted to Juliet. Even after saying she's bisexual, they mostly still use “gay”, while it often seems to be just slang for any queer person, though she does get annoyed by Lacey not saying “bisexual”. Lena Newman is drawn to Juliet James, a new student at her school, immediately on seeing her. The pair quickly become friends, though Lena soon realizes she's into Juliet more than just platonically. Juliet, who's an open lesbian, is all that she wants in another person. Lena though had never before thought of herself as anything except straight, and has to grapple with not only her newfound bisexuality but also how her family will be about this. Meanwhile, as she grows closer with Juliet and her family, Lena is drawn into their issues as well.
