Her sweets are well-known throughout the Kingdom of Hearts, even attracting the interest of the King.

Unfortunately for Cath, the King has also begun to express an interest in ''her.'' And her parents absolutely do not want her running off to open a bakery with her best friend when she could be the Queen of Hearts. When it looks like the King is about to propose to her at a royal ball, Cath flees into the gardens, where she meets his new court joker. A budding romance forms between Cath and Jest, and she must decide whether to pursue her passions or follow the life that her parents want for her. And to top it all off, there's a Jabberwock stalking the Kingdom...

The book draws from both ''Literature/AliceInWonderland'' and ''Literature/ThroughTheLookingGlass'', as well as other literary references, i.e. Edgar Allen Poe. It is not, however, related in any way to [[Literature/TheLunarChronicles Meyer's other series of fairy-tale retellings]]. It is also notable for including characters that often don't make it into other Alice adaptations, such as the Duchess and the Mock Turtle.

!! ''Heartless'' contains examples of:
* BigEater: Cath ''would'' be this trope, but her mother usually prevents her from eating much of anything so that she can fit into tighter dresses.
* BreakTheCutie: Cath starts out as a sweet girl who just wants to open up a bakery. How she becomes the Queen of Hearts is the plot of the book.
* CanonCharacterAllAlong: Several, which may or may not be a Reveal depending on your familiarity with the source material: [[spoiler:Mary Ann is the same Mary Ann that serves as a maid to the White Rabbit, Margaret Mearle becomes the Duchess, and Raven becomes the Queen of Hearts' executioner]].
* ChefOfIron: [[spoiler:Cath ends up slaying the Jabberwock, although it leads to tragic consequences]].
* CouldHaveAvoidedThisPlot: Cath's parents insist that all they want is for her to be happy, but they don't sincerely ask her if marrying the King will truly make her happy until the very end of the book. Cath bitterly points out that a lot of things could have been avoided if they'd just done that in the first place.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: Her parents want her to marry the King of Hearts. Jest is most certainly not the King of Hearts. [[spoiler:Although it's later revealed that he is a Rook from the Kingdom of Chess, and in Chess, a rook is on the same level as a Marquess. It's still not enough to please her parents, however]].
* DoomedByCanon: This ''is'' an origin story for the Queen of Hearts, after all.
* OffWithHisHead: Would it be a Queen of Hearts story if this trope DIDN'T come up? [[spoiler: And it's nothing but tragic when it happens.]]
* {{Tagline}}: "Before she was the Queen of Hearts she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love".
* TastesLikeDiabetes: InUniverse. The love poems that the King sends to Cath while courting her. She can always tell when Jest helped write one because those poems actually ''do'' touch her heart.
* YellowEyesOfSneakiness: Averted; Jest has yellow eyes, but he is a good person. [[spoiler:Granted, he's not entirely forthcoming about his motives for coming to the Kingdom of Hearts, but he genuinely loves Cath]].
